I set up my SPJ set up with a Penn battalion slow pitch rod with the twist around guides. I have two of them, one rated to 150 grams and another for 250 grams, both rods were $169 each and luckily I had some coupons at west marine to offset the cost. I put the piscifun slow pitch jig reels on both rods. I’m into each rod about $300 each with power pro braid on them. So far I am very happy with them and fish in max 100’ of water in my area.

I just used the Piscifun Reel Spooler to spool a couple of spinning reels. They’re cheap and Chinese, but it works ok and gives you a nice level spool if you do it right. BTW, I 11:55 would have never guessed the Daiwa 400 could be used for jigging in 100’ of saltwater. Cool! It would be nice to see a demonstration of slow jigging with these budget reels.

@Big Rich Absolutely love the 400 Lexa HD reels. VERY versatile reel with plenty of SMOOTH drag and hold a ton of PE1 or PE2. Great Reel for $375.

I agree, they are VERY expensive, especially when feeding them to the sharks. Unfortunately, they're likely headed up in price rather than down... What's REALLY expensive is carbon fiber Japanese rods. We look for any substitutes that will pitch the jig correctly and not break. But, as you know, All parts of this are needed, but it is highly expensive. Good thing is, once anglers learn it, the benefits are tremendous... most of the time, anyhow.. Fish on!

@@bottomfishing24-7 thanks for your response! I plan on building out two rods using MHX blanks to keep the price down. I"ll probably pick one reel and swap it between rods as needed. Not worrying about bait sounds pretty fantastic to me.

I will help him to answer your question.but forgive me my english not that good.1 piece rod feels more solid when you fight with fish.but It doesnt mean 2 pcs not good.2 pcs rod it easier to carry when you travel a lot for fishing.and shimano mostly comes with 2 pcs rod.it depends on the series.🙏🏽🙏🏽

Hey thanks for the video. Very informative. From Canada here and do sumner striper fishing in Newport RI. Just bought a Shimano Spenic 4000 6.2:1 24lb drag for spoon fishing this season. Seen your video and liked the 8.2 300 Picifun Alijoz idea. Amazon has it for $106 CDN. MY question is I’m planning on using this reel for spoon casting/jogging. 3.5 to 4 Oz spoons. In your opinion woukd yhis 300 series reel VW adequate or should I attempt to get a bigger version ? Say the 400 series? The 300 looks rather small in your hand. But not as small when on the rod ? My intentions got the spoon fishing is the use the above mentioned Shimano reel recently purchased. And wanted another style abd seen your video on the bait caster style. You think the 300 will do not only for vertical jigging but also for cast retrieve spoon fishing. Stripers. Bluefish salt water. Rhode Island waters. Thanks.

That's a great question. I would get the 400 if it is available, but we have not gotten any yet for testing. IF it's as good as the 300, It will probably be a good reel. I am going to order some 400's as soon as we get done with some other projects this season.. Good luck and let us know how your fishing goes! Fish on!

They're holding up well so far.. Level winds and paws are fine thus far.. We'll finish testing at the end of the spring season and report back here with all the info.. So far, so good.. We'll see!

What 20lb braid do you recommend? I have noticed different braids have different diameters. If I fish 350 feet or less can I use 40lb braid? Or will it scope line too much?

I would use 20,, carefully, play the drag when you need to. Try Daiwa Jbraid in 20 lb. If I mention SpiderWire, Stealth Camo, which I have begun to like very much, I might get shot.. ;-) See this 20 lb braid shootout we just did yesterday - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaGoZ2qklp2AY5o

Just curious why you use such a long leader (of red fluoro)? why not 3' or 5'? Good info, thanks.

Brenda, mainly for "stretch" to keep from pulling hooks out of fish on the way up from the bottom. Braid (the mainline) has zero stretch so the long leader is a must when fishing small, thin wire hooks.. Shorter leaders may help slightly in providing some stretch, but longer leaders help tremendously. The longer leader also helps prevent hooks from bending as easy when heavy drag is required. Hey Captain. Thanks for your reply to my Piscifun 300 question. I went ahead and bought it base on numerous positive reviews. Picked it up for $106 CDN with delivery by end of day here. I’m looking for a suitable rod to match it to and listened to your comments on the Shimano Talavera 6.6 medium. I’m planning on using this outfit for large spoon jigging in the 3.5 to 4.5 Oz range. Would the medium action be sufficient for such a large heavy spoon or would a medium/heavy be the way to go ? Thanks

No problem, glad to help. The Talavera SLOW-J 6.6 with that much weight, I would step it up a notch to the MH if you can find one in 6.6 length. If you have to, I wouldn't be worried dropping to the Talavera SLOW-J 6 ft length which will be slightly more stout at the tip especially for pitching a heavier Jig. . Either way, I agree on the MH instead of the M. Fish on! Keep me posted, and good luck on the water!

I’ve been looking at those reels lately they have a 400 size coming out soon. Can the rod fish light jigs? Im doing some micro jigging with 21-64g jigs in under 80’ water.

Justin, yes sir, it can fish light to medium jigs. Still to this point, zero problems. Thankfully. I will definitely be testing the 400's when I can get hold of a few. I will post results after a good bit of use on the 400 as well. Fish on! Capt. RL

@@LBINICK I'll add a small piece of bonito or just the skin of a bonito to a bucktail jig only, and only during periods of very slow running or slack tide. Sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't but I like to try it when the tide isn't moving good.

Oh no, it's not carbon fiber. We're talking about budget stuff that will work.. Definitely agree, it isn't exactly the same but I am definitely impressed with it after a ton of hours using it. Thanks for watching, fish on!

Many of my Jigs I purchase from a bulk Seller we got to know back in 2014 or so.. We buy Tanacom and Beastmaster Electric Reels from him from over In Japan. Although, many SPJ are made in China most recently especially, I will see what I can find out about the exact brand of the Jigs you''re referring to.. He will likely know.. That said, Jorge Polo (JYG Jigs) and Johnny Jigs we also have, but those you point out are not either of them.
