Network switches can get expensive. Do they have the features you need? POE? 10Gb? Enterprise switches are sold for cheep online all the time. Do they make for good switches to use in the home?
I called it the SP2500 but it's just the S2500... sorry.

I picked up an Aruba S3500-48P with a dual power supply for $99 from eBay. P.S. The stacking ports in the Aruba switches can be changed to standard ports from the command line but not from the web interface.

The two last SPF+ ports can be configured to remove the stacking and can be used as regular SFP+ ports

In a home setting power draw would also be a consideration, well for most people. Thanks for the vid.

I have the Aruba Networks S2500-24P-4x10 switch, have to learn CLI for programing it and took a while to get the firmware upgraded finally got it to go though the usb port. Now to learn more CLI for trunk ports or some call it lacp or lagg's really wont need it now since I'm using a 10g back bone between my switches now. I did disable the stacking ports but later will most likely enable them since I will be getting a second switch so will. one for the home and poe, and one in office for poe.

Ssh into switch ip> admin:password>enable:password>conf t>delete stacking interface stack Usually the port is 0/1/3 and 0/1/4 sometimes it is 1/1/1 and 1/1/2. To find out : enable>conf t>show interface stacking. Another useful one is enable>conf t>show stack-profile

for the S2500 you can easily change the stacking ports to be normal ports in the cli. takes 5min at worst

I'm a fan of the 4948, but I've only used the original (1Gb) version, not the 10Gb version, which seems to be much louder. I'm using a 4948 as my main home switch with five VLANs, and a separate Mikrotik 10Gb switch for a non-routed 10Gb network. The best part about the Cisco is the price--they're on Ebay all day long for $50 apiece.

Rebooted switch.... flames shot out of the power supply. Which is weird because this was the second thing I have had shoot flames out of the power supply.

Jack, I have this switch. You can make the stacking ports switching ports if you so desired...

This is how I found out about this switch but didn’t watch past the first few minutes before I pulled the trigger and bought one... lesson learned. Thank you!

Just as I'm getting ready to build my first rack, and I'm trying to figure out what switch to get because Unifi rackmount switches are too much for me at the moment.... This comes up! Thank you so much, I'll have to pick one up. Will you be doing a video on modding the switch with Noctua fans?
@MillerTechnicalServices
@MillerTechnicalServices 3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! I probably won’t do the mod myself as the switch is pretty quiet and in my basement but if you’ve seen the inside of a computer before, you can do it yourself. It’s pretty straight forward. There aren’t any weird kinks to deal with.

@@MillerTechnicalServices I'll most likely do the mod just because the only place for my rack is in my room. So I have to attempt to make things as silent as I can haha.

So you can connect two computers to the two SFP+ ports? And the other two are for stacking only?
@MillerTechnicalServices
@MillerTechnicalServices 5 ай бұрын
That was my original assumption. You can make all ports regular sfp+ with a cli command.

Thank you very much for making this video! What does this switch look like in the UDM Pro GUI? It looks like you just have to use the GUI in the switch rather than stay within the Unifi GUI.
@martinwierenga1648

You will see it as a client but not in devices. UniFi only shows and configures within the UniFi ecosystem.
@El3andro

Since those switches are not Unifi switches, you will have to use the separate GUI of the switches for configuration

What is the power consumption of the Aruba? Does it shoot up your power bill?
@MillerTechnicalServices
@MillerTechnicalServices 3 жыл бұрын
Not compared to any other 48 port POE switch... but it does draw a lot less power than the Cisco which didn't even have POE. I didn't need its layer 3 switching features.

Do you know which sfp+ dac cable could work between a udm pro and aruba s2500?
@MillerTechnicalServices
@MillerTechnicalServices 2 жыл бұрын
I have not had good luck with Dac cables and the Aruba switch. I use Cisco 10gb sfp+ modules (the ones on eBay for like $7) and a short fiber patch cable. Whole thing costs like $16
