I love MPC Lionel as well as Williams train. Dmpc Rolling Stock is not as bad as what everybody makes it to be. You can shop around and find good Williams locomotives on sale for $100 brand new in the box. I also bought K line Passenger cars which are as good or better as post-war cars. I have an old Bakelite observation car I just started to roll around the tracks to pick up started to get electricity at seventy-year-old light bulbs started to work. Now that's quality.

@@dagryffynhobby I have one of those Hudson's that you want. A motorcycle shop owner I used to do business with stop by my house because he had a great big bunch of Lionel train sets I've been in a shed that got flooded. Unfortunately his best stuff was on the bottom and his newer stuff like his MPC was on top. The Hudson Motor spend so with the wheels so I know it's good when I get all this stuff off my train table and back into sheds because of the hurricane I can get by railroad backup. I might just take that engine down to the local train guy and say here lube it up and get it good and running never even try chess it it might be running now I'll have to go try that. I don't pay collector prices for anything I don't care what the Greenburgh book says. I run my small post-war 027 cars along with my marks cars and locomotives on an old 27 only layout that's why everything looks correct and nothing looks out of place I ordered K line o27 big boy conventional only, I did not get the locomotive for 3 years they debited my card and I received it I was going to send it back but they wanted $100 restocking fee so I just kept it that 027 big boy would look at run good on my 027 layout underneath my larger layout. Three-quarters size of a scale big boy but it was only $400 I could not imagine spending $2,700 for a Lionel Vision big boy I wonder how much the ancient cost is for all the electronics in it? Like you said that's what's great about old trains you clean and oil them up and they are good to go

Dave I picked up my 8206 NYC Hudson for $35 in the original box. I replaced the foam in the tender but the sound is kind of garbled which I really don't care about. It does wobble and when I checked it I found it had one traction tire on the Loco causing that. The smoke unit didn't smoke which was fine because we can't run smoke in the club building. It was froze up solid but I cleaned the old grease out and lubed it and ran it on some rollers and watched the Amp draw come down as it freed up. I might need to add some weight to the tender as it is pretty light. It still needs some adjustment to the drawbar but for the $35 price tag I guess I shouldn't complain. I love MPC bargains. Great video Dave.

MPC is great, the only real thing wrong with them is the completely cursed, awful sound of steam tenders. Some are in perfect condition and don't sound too bad but most are terrible, just end up keeping it unplugged. It sucks to have a silent train with no whistle but it's better than no train.
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 2 жыл бұрын
Shop around at hobby shops, train shows, or on-line for what I call "orphan whistle tenders," that is tenders that for whatever reason became separated from the engines over the years. You may have to rehab the whistle units but Dave's got a video that shows you how. Most can be found for pretty reasonable prices. An easy way to solve the silent train problem.

Some people forgot that this is supposed to be fun, you don't need the best and more expensive. Heck, I personally enjoy the silhouettes in passenger cars and they are normally cheaper. If you got the money for the most expensive trains go for it. I would rather use my imagination and play toy trains with my family and friends then care if my engine has the right shade of color or exact scale height
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I prefer the silhouettes in the windows myself. Gluing people in cars with clear windows is a PITA. Now I cut strips from empty milk jugs and block the windows so you can't see in. Milk jug plastic's opaque enough so you can't see though it, but thin enough to let the light through. Looks good to me.

The short lifespan of the electronics is what keeps me rooted in the past. The JLC and the Chicago Alton are essentially the same engine, just different paint. Thanks! I’ve stuck mostly to MPC steamers but oh yeah, there are a bunch of nice diesels too!

K line made some very excellent aluminum Passenger cars with detailed Interiors. HO passenger car had no interior and no lights. Now you can buy the interior put in the car as well as the light kit accept both of those items cost more than the car itself. I am not satisfied with cars that just have Silhouettes in the window I am just spoiled by aluminum Passenger cars detailed interiors and passengers empty passenger trains were to prototypical which is why they got discontinued.

I like the nostalgia of the silhouettes but I could see wanting detailed interiors at some point. They do look amazing

Great video, Dave, like always. You did a great job of explaining how one can make the hobby more affordable and still acquire a nice collection of trains. I do enjoy your railroad. I hope your weekend is a good one. Bill B.

I'm old school by nature so prefer postwar, but I definitely see your point about how MPC-era Lionel can deliver a lot of value on a budget. It might be interesting to see how the actual innards of two highly similar locomotives (say the postwar 665 and the MPC-era 8206 or the JLC Hudson with the postwar 2046)) compare to each other, in terms of actual compenentry (e.g. motors, gearing, wheels, e-units, smoke units). What are the pros and cons of any changes, if changes were made? Did these changes improve the performance/appearance of the loco or did they detract?

No school like the old school! I’m primarily a postwar fan but have been branching out. They add some needed variety to the all black steamers of the postwar era. Some of the changes made to the MPC engines are welcome additions but for the most part they really are the same. A while ago I spent quite a lot of effort comparing the MPC 8206 and Postwar 2055, and then proceeded to accidentally delete all the video. I was not happy! I would say overall, MPC has one up on postwar by being newer and many times easier to find in great condition. The one main con of the MPC era though was inconsistent and troubled manufacturing, some some stuff just didn’t turn out well as far as quality. But I’ve definitely found some great running MPC engines!

Dave, Way to go! In 1962 I was given a 1060 engine w/a sloped tender. Includes a Lehigh hopper, Cities Service tender, and caboose. There's no operating couplers nor reverse or smoke. I stopped in '72 and returned to the hobby in 1981. I collect MPC and Modern TMCC. Nothing past that. But the basic set is the most charming.

Good eye. The "Cowen Special," w/ the Williams cars lash-up is perfect and terrific. The Southern, and Blue Comet are winners, and an MPC Berk is a first for me. Build and savor each find, a bit at a time, without breaking the bank is what makes this a fun hobby. Thanks for sharing. The older stuff is the most rewardable.

Thanks! It’s so much more rewarding, for me anyway, to track down a great older model for a good deal, than ordering the newest gadgets out of catalogs.

Hi Dave just re watched this video and you mentioned an auction site. What sites have you used besides e-bay for trains. I have seen some auction sites on Facebook but am not sure whether they are scams or not.

I keep looking at various auction sites but I’ve only bought from eBay, Facebook marketplace and groups on Facebook.

It's only as expensive as you allow it to be or if you have any sort of say addictional personality, let's just say it could easily get out of hand Lol. 😂 Just like you said Dave, it's all about you the person who's doing the collecting, but yes Sir we all want a 226E or a original 700E or multiple of each LMAO! Otherwise it's all about your dreams and wishes or memories that we use to drive us through this hobby. I use to collect antique and restore 19teens through the mid 50s Rare Outboards and had 3 vintage race boats! One Outboard I spent money on, I could buy 3 700E's! Lol So after downsizing and getting older I've got rid of many of my hundreds of Outboards and I'm down to a single boat now with a couple rare Mercury factory race outboards that are just too special to remove from my life right now. But yes the hobby of any sorts has a beginning and let's say a more mature collecting deal to it. Unless we're born independently wealthy and can afford to go straight for the jugular and buying the best of the best. I began with whats referred to in the outboard community as the less desirable and more common engines in my beginning stages. After some wheeling and dealing eventually with time and some elbow grease, we can work our ways up to catching the bigger fish on the menu. But hey brother this is life and we are all doing whatevers possible, with what we have to work with on "Disposable Incomes" which today OMG with this lovely economy and inflation rate, doesn't leave much to be desired anymore! I think many of us are more concerned anymore with getting a tank of gas or food for a week or paying the mortgage? It also helps me too, thar my wife doesn't know what I'm spending on my hobbies LMFAO, otherwise I'd be worried about how to pay for the divorce lawyers! 😂❤👍 Otherwise great stuff as usual Dave, thanks man and good luck with your new layout! Can't wait to see what directions you plan on going with it next man. God bless and keep on chugging away brother!

Dave, I'm sorry that you were hit with Covid. Thankfully you're healthy. Covid is rough, I know. And watching your contributions are enjoyable and inspires me to push myself back into my trains since my discharge a year ago from the hospital. Enjoy your collection and your hobby. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. Yeah Covid just plain sucks. I’ve moved into long Covid now, fatigue and shortness of breath. Sorry to hear you were in the hospital. Happy to be of any inspiration, it’s one of the best parts of this whole thing and definitely keeps me going

Thanks! I’d say some of the $10 cars I’ve picked up haven’t been worth it, but most have. There are a couple that are just so light and flimsy, but there are definitely lots of quality items out there for good prices.

@@dagryffynhobby I had it back in January and missed two weeks of work (the most I've ever missed!) and spent another two weeks about as useful as a lump of coal. Yes, the fatigue was probably the worst part of it!
