Good topic to cover, I'm sure it will help some people. Personally I went with those kinds of chassis the first couple of years but now use things like boxes, corrugated plastic and even hollowed out pieces of 2x4. I have come to prefer these kinds of options over the generic commercial offerings. The homemade ones are not perfect but perfection is never the goal.

Tip from my side, on the rover 5 robot buy knex wheels remove the tracks and place the plastic of the knex wheels on the rover .

Interesting. However, I want to see encoders on the wheels to counter wheel slip and absolute navigation. I much prefer metal ( or even wood ) chassis.

The dfrobot pirate chassis can also have 25mm motors installed. that is the first thing I did when I bought mine.
