I am debt free as of last Wednesday! I had a 12,561 dollars left on a car loan that I started paying off in August. Wanted to mention that, cause 1. OMG YAY! and 2. Watching your videos really helped me through working all the extra jobs and not spending anything :) Anyway, now that I'm debt free I have a specific "Movies" section in my budget and I LOVE going to the movie theater! Not only that, I actually prefer to go alone! Lol

I used to spend $100s every month on books. Now as a librarian I get 90% of my books from work. I only buy books that are digital format that aren't carried by my library or Overdrive or Travel books as I consider those a 'souvenir' of the trip. I also have an account at Netgalley.com. It's free and publishers look at your profile and send you digital advance copies of books to read and give feedback on. Lots of first time authors but also so established authors.

Hi I agree with not paying for an account. My bank introduced this a few years back and we had to part ways. I don't pay for movies I sign up to do mystery shopping and essentially get paid to watch them. I also use another service which ask people to preview movies and occasionally get free concert and theatre tickets. As for books I wait for them to go on sale or go to the clearance store or sign up to the newsletters for books collectives to get a free copy of a new release to give a review on. Love your videos

I don't pay for movies, just wait a year or two for it to appear on network TV, or on a free streaming site through my library called Hoopla. I watch documentaries on KZbin. Books, I get those from my library where I also work, they also have great sales I get sewing books for almost nothing. I also use Interlibrary loan. I like Overdrive for ebooks. I don't eat out much, but when I do I go to a nice place from town. I buy second hand clothes sometimes if they're like new and fit properly. I walk to work, but if I have to take the bus it's $2 a trip, a pass is $50/month. I garden and joined our local horticultural society for $10/year, I get to garden around town. I also have an allotment to grow veggies, the library has a seed library where seeds are free. Lots of free entertainment around town, and women's drop in groups etc etc.

I agree with your whole list - with one exception. Most of the books I read I get for free. However, I have a list of authors whose books I order on release. These are not huge authors like Rowling or King, but smaller ones who are just barely making it. Their work means a lot to me, and I feel like I should do my part to support them if I want them to keep writing. In one case, I even set up a small monthly Patreon donation (NK Jemisin). I suspect this is partly because I work at a newspaper. I know people can read most of the stories online for free, but I really appreciate the people who actually support the paper, and help pay the people who write those stories.

Things I don't pay for now that I'm saving for adoption - books (use the library), entertainment (find ways to have fun for free), data on cell phone, anything that isn't an absolute mendacity necessity because ever dollar I waste is a dollar I could have used to bring my daughter home.

The things I never spend money on are very similar to yours. 1. Bank fees! 2. Movies or cable. I don't even have netflix and haven't been to a theater in over 5 years. 3. Subscription boxes. There is one I really want but it is really expensive and I don't have the money for it right now. 4. Haircuts, mani/pedi. I always do this myself. However at some point I want to color my hair purple, which requires bleaching, and I will go to a salon for that. 5. Basic auto maintenance labor costs. I change my own windshield wipers, lights, and filters. Obviously I buy the parts but I refuse to pay someone $30 for 5 minutes of work.

Definitely find a bank that won't charge you a monthly fee! Also another tip to avoid ATM fees, you can go inside the bank and request a cash advance (even with debit cards) and a lot of times they can swipe the card and give you cash with no fee, much better than getting those ATM fees (:
@munhl7 жыл бұрын
In the UK fee-paying bank accounts are called packaged accounts as the fee includes discounts on family insurance, car breakdown services, mobile phone insurance. These extras were never relevant for me, so I never paid to have a bank account. However, now some of the financial laws/regulations have changed and people are able to claim back the money they were charged for these accounts as in some cases the benefits were useless and mis-sold. I haven't been to the cinema in about 10 years and will wait till a film is shown on a freeview channel.
@everydayhomelife86977 жыл бұрын
Never have paid for ATM or bank fees either nor overdraft, I agree completely that's it's crazy to have to pay to sit your money somewhere. We always seem to have gift cards for the theater but actually don't like going. We're a bit paranoid at times there plus worried about bed bugs. A theater around here had a major issue with them and have had to remodel twice now but they come back. We only rent movies from the library. We have DVDs, pick them up for $1 or $2 but only our absolute favorites. One thing we don't spend money on is the salons. Never had a mani/pedi and no desire to but also no salon hair cut or coloring. My husband bought a hair cut kit that works well and I trim mine with scissors. I do color my hair at home and it costs about $8 every 3 months!! Use to spend $60 every 3 months and my husband spent $13 every other month. Great savings!

Good stuff. Ugh, I had an overdraft issue just once, but it was for two checks. I wasn't being shady, it was an honest oversight. But OUCH. Things were SO close to the vest financially at that time and it was a hit I could not take. Lesson definitely learned. I loved these tips. Sharing!

1) Books - same here. I buy them used, but mostly I just borrow from the Library - with my favorite shopping card. LOL! (2) Banks - except for our mortgage. I switched to using a Credit Union years ago, I think it was 1993 and I've never looked back. I love Credit Unions, since they are run by the members. (3) Movies - We rarely go to the movies. Maybe once every 3 years or so, we might go to a movie on a one of our birthdays or anniversary. So I can't say never, but it's very rare. (4) Manicures - I do my own and pedicures too, although I will occasionally budget in a professional pedicure when Summer sets in, so I can have a nail tech do a pretty design on my toes for sandal season. (5) Liquid detergent & fabric softners of any kind - they're expensive and almost all of them are bad for the environment. I use FOCA, which is phosphate free and cost about $7-8 for an 11 lb bag, which will last me for six months or more. I use vinegar as a fabric softener.

On the bank issue, I decided to go with a local credit union that would charge me if I didn't meet certain requirements. HOWEVER, if I DO meed those (which I do every month), I get 3% interest on my money. Now the silly thing is, the 3% is ONLY on my checking account, not on the savings account (1%), so I use a budgeting software (YNAB in my case) to keep track of my available funds. So, everything that's in my account can get 3% APR.

had a Kindle.it died.old. my husband downloads everything from the Internet free. it pays to know computer folk. instead of paying see if your area has little free libraries.never buy books from unique.rip off extreme.see if there is a community center near you that has books. yard sales.garage sales.tag sales rummage sales.libraries might have a dollar a bag book sales.see if neighbors read and would do a book swap.

See, I disagree. I have 10-15 DVDs that I like to watch over and over again. But I try to limit the amount. I went crazy like 5 years ago, and I had like 50 DVD, and they were clutter. I don't buy new books either. I just had to order a new e-reader because my Nook Simple Touch froze. I also like Netflix, Hulu, and CBS all access (I know I shouldn't be paying for them. I might cancel Hulu again.)

Thoroughly enjoying your content, thank you for these helps. Heya from Louisiana, sorry about your Katrina experience. A question. Betterment has "supposedly" a better interest rate than Capital One 360, I'm curious why you wouldn't put it there, is it the issue of the no atm?

And you became the way you are how? Did you take economics in college? Were your parents thrifty? Did you hit rock bottom and have to have a fresh start? Inquiring minds want to know!

I would say there are things I rarely spend money on. Make up, clothes, shoes, ( these are on a need basis when I do), going to a salon and getting stuff done. Eating out at real restaurants, usually for Valentine's day with a Christmas gift card and our anniversary but even then we usually have some money towards it as a gift. We rarely do the movies because it costs so much to go but do go maybe once or twice a year depending. ( saw magic Mike 2 at the theater. lol I went with my mom and it was hilarious because the theater was full of middle aged women cheering and laughing. It was fun! didn't go to gawk at the men) In the summer movie theaters have kids movies for like $1-$3 or something once. a week. The movies aren't new movies but it is fun since usually it is one from the previous year they hadn't seen. Also in our area the parks do movie nights for free. And cutting the winter the one church does a free kids movie once a month. There are many cheap and free options out there. also libraries have movies to borrow for free.
