Aloha from Big Island brudda! I just wanted to say thanks for the trail money budget video! I feel that your the first thru-hiker on KZbin that didn’t say you spent 5000$ plus! Every time I watch a video it’s a little off putting when most others mention spending some big cash. I’m going to thru hike the AT this season or next and am gonna try to stay out of town as much as needed. I’m really excited to see how my body handles it to be honest. Lol But anyways thanks again brah and keep up the mean content 🤙🏼🌋

I realize this video is slightly old now but the info is still very relevant and useful. You mentioned a $20 permit fee for hiking through SMNP which made me ponder how this would play out if the government shuts down again. Right now we're in a 3 week reprieve, but there's a decent possibility that once the three weeks are up that they will shut down again. This will be right about the time that the first NOBO hikers are heading out.

Thanks Madalyn. I sure did learn a whole lot last year. My next long distance thru-hike I will be doing what Early Riser does and go with Verizon and get an unlimited plan. Then I never have to worry much about the broadband speed and can upload much more often. I hated relying everything on the internet speed at the hotels and hostels.

Dumb question… so you’ve pre-purchased 4 pairs of shoes… are you bringing these or sending these to drops?

Can't you buy gear from Amazon whilst on the trail & have it shipped to a post office or motel?
@FollowBigfoot
@FollowBigfoot 7 жыл бұрын
+EasyCookVideos Yes, you can do that to. As long as you plan ahead. That will save you some dough!

Did you have any put aside for emergency use, like if you got hurt and had to seek medical care or stay longer someplace to heal up a bit? Not serious enough to end the hike, but enough to delay you a few days?

hey bigfoot if you spent 3500 dollars that to me is not bad. i just watched homemade wonderlust/dixie - and she spent a thousand a month the six months she was out there. also gator miller said he spent about what you spent. 6 to 7grand seems high and out of reach of most. if not the majority.

+Robert Rockwell Thanks Robert. I know I could have saved a lot of money if I was able to split rooms with hikers which I didn't do a lot with the way my Hike went.
@HomemadeWanderlust
@HomemadeWanderlust 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert, yes, I spent about $1000 a month (which is what the ATC suggests is the average), just like Bigfoot did. If he was out there 100 days, that's 3+ months, and $3500. For me it was 6+ months and between $6,000-7,000. I suppose like going out of town anywhere (backpacking or normal travel), it is going to be more expensive the longer you are there. Like I said, though, $1000/month is the average which means some can certainly do it with less and some prefer more "luxuries" and spend more. It's all about budgeting and personal preference :)

agree dixie . i did not know he was out there only 100 days until i watched the videos. but gator miller said he only spent 3500. but he did a lot of stuff like no zeros and he continued the trail after katahdin but 7000 is really not bad for 6 to 7 months.

@Hiker63
@Hiker63 8 жыл бұрын
Follow Bigfoot I'm arriving at the Hiker Hostel in Dahlone, Georgia on March 10th. I'm starting from Springer on the 13th. I booked a couple of nights thinking the wife and daughter would come up and stay a couple of nights before I head out. I don't really want them driving the 600 plus miles just for that so I'll probably be solo and head out prior to the 13th. Maybe the 12th. I'm good to go. Just waiting for March.

+Roaming Gnome I haven't told anyone this yet but I'm actually going to Hike Georgia section in March. I haven't decided exactly when it will be but it will likely be the 2nd week of March. I want to spend a week with the start of the 2017 class. Maybe our paths will cross in Georgia.

@erikgiggey4783

at 13 pounds base weight right now. i have things preventing a 2017 thru hike :( as i drop more body weight i can lighten my gear more as a hammock camper and being heavy it requires heavier gear. so far i have dropped more than 100 pounds so pack eight really isnt an issue :P my body is still used to the weight

taking something simple like hiking...and turning it super complicated is a shame... why not just say to hell with it and stay home..... what did the first guy who hiked it do..?
@FollowBigfoot
@FollowBigfoot 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael burnette Super complicated? Many hikers have to get off the Trail because they run out of money and can't afford to stay on the Trail. I'm trying to help other hikers chances of finishing their hikes by giving them useful advice from what I learned on the Trail as well what I learned from others. I'm sorry that you feel this way about the video.

no I think you did a great video..infact all your videos are great... but the thing is ALL the videos I see. They all talk about how much it cost to hike the complete trail....and I'm thinking Geeeezzzz... why not just stay home and save all the money and buy a pool for the back yard...
@FollowBigfoot
@FollowBigfoot 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael burnette Yeah, it can cost a pretty penny. I get what you are saying, I just perceived it differently when I read your first comment. If one is efficient at living below their means, hiking the trail can be done on a fair budget. Most of the time hikers find it hard to do this
