Budo Goromo and AI Goromo Koi variety [GUIDE]

A new Koi variety Guide with this week BUDO GOROMO and AI GOROMO Koi varieties.
Did you know that Goromo means ‘robed in blue’? And for Budo Goromo the name ‘Blue grapes’ is also used. You can spot that when you look at the red area’s of the Budo Goromo. For a Budo Goromo, this will look darker compared to a Ai Goromo.
On a Ai Goromo it looks like half-moon patterns are visible on each scale, on top of the red markings. You want these Half moon darker patterns visible on each red scale. And you actually don’t want any of these darker half moon patterns to be visible on the white areas.
For any Goromo, Budo or AI, the white should be as white as possible. For a Ai Goromo, when it is young, you want it to look almost like a Kohaku! So actually only red patterns, the white as white as possible and almost no black that is developing. The lighter the black, the better. Black will very easily develop later on and become darker.
In this video I use 3 Budo Gormo and 3 AI Goromo from the Sakazume Koi Farm to explain you the differences and guide you which aspects you should look for during the selection of this Koi variety.
The Koromo variety came to existence by crossing Kohaku with Asagi. The base actually is a white Koi with a red Kohaku pattern on it. But on a Goromo, in the red area’s a black net pattern or reticulation is visible.

Hi there, no not specially toby fry will grow into Jumbo size. Toby are the ones that start eating their peers very early when growing up. For that reason they have a very protein rich diet and they will grow faster. The breeder needs to be very, very lucky to have a Toby that also has a nice pattern. Usually this is not the case and the toby fry are discarded

I got a mail order, overnight shipped Budo Goromo in the US that was entirely red (not orange) with the visible blackish blue robing across the entire body, a striking looking fish, sadly it died, the dealer promptly refunded me, I had to ask what it was because it was so unusual, I was surprised when they told me it was a Goromo. Thanks for the in depth reviews, they are very helpful.

@@Aboutkoi I did not get it replaced with a Goromo it came a a random selection in a 10 fish premium grade Tosai pond pack, I really like the Goromo but have no room currently in my aquatic realm.

The only surefire way to tell if a koromo is an ai goromo or a budo goromo is whether violet is present on the forehead or not. A budo goromo always has a little amount of violet present in its forehead (making the red plate pattern on the head look purplish), whereas an ai goromo always has a pure scarlet head (the violet color is always restricted to the rad scales). This is because generally (but not always) ai goromo have violet-edged red scales while budo goromo has violet-centered red scales. However, I had a koromo before in which the order of red and violet in the red pattern scales are reversed (violet center, red margins) but forehead remained clear scarlet, making it an ai goromo. Additionally, if the red step patterns are overwhelmed by violet color to the point that only the outer margins of the steps themselves are red, you will have a sumi goromo (which looks a lot like a shiro bekko with oversized patterns if not for the telltale red margins and the fact that black is not supposed to be on the forehead). One breed of koromo I wish to eventually buy sometime in the near future is a koromo showa, which may have either violet-edged or violet-centered red scales, but with dark black facial pattern and black utsuri-type patterns all over the body.

@@Aboutkoi According to one of my go-to local retailers, his suppliers for koromo show are Otsuka Koi Farm and Isa Koi Farm although Dainichi and Maruhiro also have them from time to time. However. it is a very rare breed because the violet color should be present in practically every red scale of the fish; otherwise, it would just be considered as an unusual (though no doubt beautiful) showa. I think it's more helpful to think of the three common types of koromo as a spectrum, with ai goromo at the light end, budo goromo at the centerpoint, and sumi goromo at the heavy end.

Actually none of this koi are good quality and would consider them the norm. The Ai goromo will turn out darker than an ai goromo should be as they mature. That is true, as we try to share as well. There is however a big quality (and price) gap in the Koi used to explain in this video and the one you are referring to. Indeed Koromo should be as white as possible, people should be confused about the fact if it is a Kohaku or Koromo variety.
