Buena Vista, Colorado - History & Information - #25/100

Buena Vista was a planned community built in 1879 in an effort to catch business brought by the railroad. It's location near Victorian Colorado's busiest mining districts made it a major hub with 3 different rail lines at it's peak. Unfortunately, mining declined and the entire valley struggled for decades, but a post-WW2 increase in tourism has revived Buena. With St Elmo, Twin Lakes, and Mt Princeton Resort (among MANY others) just a few minutes away, it's no wonder it now has a higher population today than it did in the 1880's.
Ski Lodge consists me and the rest of my family as we explore the great State of Colorado and more. Initially created to get everyone out of the house, it has turned into a vast collection of history, photography and general information. We are most active at skilodgecolorado

Back in 1968, while working at a summer camp near there, visited BV and ate at the H.Burger stand there, a couple of times. Hitchhiked there, no less. What times. Thanks.

I was there beginning of June last year. So beautiful. I could live there. Everyone was friendly, it was clean and quiet( but busy). definitely a place I would tell people to visit.

Thanks for the history lesson on the BV area. I've enjoyed several summer vacations around Salida, BV, Leadville and St. Elmo doing volunteer work on the Colorado Trail in the Collegiates with the Colorado Trail Foundation. Spent a very pleasant noon time in the BV town park a few years ago for lunch, sorting, organizing and repacking backpack gear for a few days of fly fishing on the Ark and some of it's tribs. I really enjoy your informative reviews of the towns in Colorado.

Born in Salida, and lived in Buena Vista in the 1960s. We never called it "Buena"... for the townfolk back then, it was pronounced "Beuknee" (Beu.. rhyming with view, +knee)

I really like your work. Very comprehensive. I was in Buena Vista in '96. It was so small we had a hard time finding a motel room. I love those Arkansas river valley towns. They all have good vibes. Keep up the good work.
