Buena Vista Social Club’s 25th Anniversary Editions, released on September 17th and comprising 2LP + 2CD Deluxe Book Pack, 2CD Casebook, 2LP Gatefold Vinyl and Digital Formats. This new video for El Cuarto De Tula features footage of the legendary 1996 Havana recording sessions, captured by Susan Titelman. This footage notably showcases celebrated laud player Barbarito Torres’ one-take solo from the album, note for note, in real time.

That's actually not a mandolin it's an instrument called a Tres they're a 6 string instrument but each string is doubled like a mandolin but each string on a Tres is tuned an octave apart so it's more similar to a 12-string guitar.

@@rolandosarabia810 Buena Vista Social Club were well known in Spain, and are very far from obscure, was this not the same amongst Latin Americans? I mean, I'm not sure by what mechanism, but they've been reasonably well known in the UK over the years... Am I missing something here?

Absolutely! And to have allowed these wonderful musicians to revive pre-revolution Cuban music; this wonderful, very special music whose rhythm stands out from all other South American rhythms. Ry Cooder convinced Wim Wenders, the German film director, to make a documentary on those musicians who had no longer played in formation since the revolution. (see the DVD)

@@carolmikofsky4976 Actually, I have only watched the documentary twice, but I think it is safe to say I AM long overdue to watch it again. I especially love the scene with Ry Cooder narrating, and there is some delicious African drumming playing in the background, and a huge ocean wave crests nearby. The fact that I do not recall all the details confirms I must watch it again.
