Buffalo are cattle that constitute the subtribe Bubalina, there are over six extant species within three genera, they are native to Africa and Asia and live more exclusively in tropical climate, the six extant buffalo species are the Mountain Anoa (Anoa quarlesi), the Lowland Anoa (Anoa depressicornis), the Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo (Bubalus mindorensis), the Asiatic Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), the African Bush Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), and the African Forest Buffalo (Syncerus nanus), the asiatic water buffalo has only two validly recognized subspecies: the Indian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis bubalis) and the Southeast Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis hosei), the african bush buffalo has four validly recognized subspecies: the Sudan Buffalo (Syncerus caffer brachyceros), the Virunga Buffalo (Syncerus caffer mathewsi), the Nile Buffalo (Syncerus caffer aequinoctialis), and the Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer), and the african forest buffalo has two validly recognized subspecies: the Ivory Buffalo (Syncerus nanus ivoriensis) and the Congo Buffalo (Syncerus nanus nanus).
