Hi Bex. Only just watched this vid (sorry!). I bought the Buffalo system in 1986 and have used it ever since. 34 years of hard & regular use all over the world & still going strong. I have used it high in the Himalayas at -25C. I have slept out in it with no tarp cover endless times. Even slept out in heavy rain, which did not penetrate through the inner bag. In summer I use just the outer. Only drawback is weight & bulk. I have now made the system even more flexible with a Gortex bivy cover & a thermal liner.

That's really good feed back to hear. I found loose feeding the Buffalo into the bottom of my litre pack makes it less bulky to transport, that video here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZuVoaGKgcyChqc If you want to take some of the weight out of the system, I use a duck down over quilt instead of the inner bag.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHyZk6ukr9qVm68 I like to keep both parts together, I fold it in half, and slot it down the spine of my pack, SF style, makes for better padding on my back as I carry it taking up less space. Thanx for watching.....

Thanx Pete. No regret purchase for me. So difficult to buy a good bag system, without a try before you buy option. This is the bag I used in the big freeze hammock camp episode. was still warm with out the buffalo smock, (from a cold sleepers) point of view like me, which I would usually wear inside this bag, below zero...ATB Bex

Terrific review ... I purchased the system, new, in the late '80s and it went everywhere with me (still have it together with the large stuff sack). Interesting to see that with my system, both inner *and* outer, have Pertex covers and both have the shoulder zips so that you can (as the name suggests) unzip the shoulder/s (and, if required, main zip), which allows you to 'wear' the system, either inner or outer or both combined. With the shoulder zips undone you could, back, chest and head remaining covered, arms through the shoulder zips and feet through the bottom of the main zip, e.g. drive a four tonner (Bedford RL - no bloody heater in those!!). Still own the complete set, all in good nick. Wonder what it's worth? (It's the XL size.) Not for sale! Keep up the good work!!

I was looking everywhere for the 80s version of the Buffalo. The one I know about had the shoulder zips, to pop your arms thru, in the inner bag, so you can make a brew, without getting out. Couldn#t find the early version anywhere. Guessing it is worth as much as a new system, due to its rerity, My MSS system is still getting what I paid for it, now the MSS is for sale, after a few nights out with the Buffalo....Bex

Jut made a couple of mods to them, and feel so cosy. Smaller in volume to the Brit arctic bag, but 300 grams heavier. Bit tight for a bigger guy, but a great alternative to synthetic fill, which doesn't work for me....bex

I am that pack horse...Lol Mss is 5kg, bulky and no where near as warm as the Buffalo, and the buffalo packs so small, about 3 litres. My army doss bag about, 2.8Kg. After Iv'e been re-shoed, and saddled, I'm off again with it...cheerio...Bex

Ive tried dozens of sleep bags including the US GI MSS, and end up taking a wool blanket also, but not with the buffalo system, the pile fleece is a similar R value to a thick blanket, see more from the buffalo on the ground camp series coming soonish...take it easy...Bex

Great review! Love my Buffalo gear. I’ve been thinking about the sleep system for a while, afak you could split them and use a single part depending on the time of year, so quite versatile. Cheers.

The fiber pile fleece insulation seems to warm me better than poly wadding bag insulation, as I am a cold sleeper...I will split the inner bag for summer, use both in winter and add the buffalo shirt in sub zero...Bex

One of the things I hate living about in north Texas is we don't get to play with all the cool winter gear. Our winter is normally two weeks long and you can get away with a ground sheet and a wool blanket

i just sold mine, ... excellent kit but i couldn't get on with the mummy shape, (i used it a dozen times) one of the best features is that it performs better than other sleeping bags when wet, (that being said i would still advise using a goretex bivi bag with it) P.S ... keep it away from sparks (and hot mess tins, etc) or you will have extra ventilation holes, lol
@bexbugoutsurvivor5 жыл бұрын
Took me years to get use to a mummy bag, (showing our age there) envelpoe bags seem to hold cold spots for me when I move. But yeh the buffalo is a tight unit, marry it up with the Dutch bivvy, and youll know what it feels like to be burried alive, or that straight jacket feeling, Will keep it away from sparks, and hot rocks, thanks M8...Bex

I am aware of the M90, many have recommended it. I personally can't fault the brit 90, and a wool blanket inside below zero, (minimal clothing) Have now married the buffalo with the Dutch hopped bivvy, and am out camping with that soon. Also I am testing light weight winter bivvy set, alternitive, to a sleeping bag also...All the best bud...Bex

Pile fleece should be inside every sleeping bag IMO. Standard insulation just doesn't cut it for me, including my MSS bags. Warm in the hammock too, with underquilt, as seen in the big freeze camp...Bex

How about using the other by itself. Wonder what the rating is then?
@bexbugoutsurvivor4 жыл бұрын
Buffalo doesn't give temperature ratings, (good idea IMO) it seems the buyer be the judge. Both parts about -3 on the ground, and -14 in a hammock (for me) I think warm sleepers will benefit more, so far the outer bag on its own, +10 (for me) not tested 1 bag on its own any lower so far....bex Buffalo System lighter and warmer vid.....Thanx 4 watchin'... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHyZk6ukr9qVm68

I have a video demonstrating how the Buffalo System fit inside my 50 litre patrol sack along with bivvy bag / basha spare clothes / cook set, and more. Buffalo is the most compact system contrary to appearances, or others opinions who have never actually owned one. Anything changed in the last 4 years or do you still feel the same?
@bexbugoutsurvivor10 ай бұрын
The Buffalo is my only synthetic bag system I use off camera. I am a cold sleeper and feel the cold at about plus 6 C with no bivvy bag or tent, but a hot Nalgene bottle and my jacket draped over my bag, and I sleep till sun up. A lighter way to go for the same money would be a feathered bag (down) but no good if you roll from your back to your side all night, as the insulation below your body is compressed and fails to insulate, thus making cold spots, and is the reason why I use this synthetic fiber fleece. Other sleeping bags claim a temperature rating that is total BS, but Buffalo is totally adapted to be used with minimal clothing even naked, and that works for me, so no need to bring extra warm clothes, other than a jacket to wear before bed time. (I never walk, wearing a jacket even in the cold)...bex

Another excellent video. In a regular night in the woods this system or the hammock. What would be your choice bex?
@bexbugoutsurvivor5 жыл бұрын
I used this Buffalo in the hammock, on the big freeze night camp vidoeo because the bag is a close fit, I found by self slipping to the foot end, longer hammock would fix that, (my bad), was minus 14 and Buffalo eminated so much warmth. I more often use the Buffalo in the Dutch bivvy, along with goose down mat, and a reflector mat. Most of the bag systems iv'e tried in the past claim a lower temp rating, yet I was not warm. Buffalo don't claim a temp rating, just a season guild line, and 15-3 degrees above zero C, was very warm, but the inner bag was unzipped to vent some of the heat. Given Iv,e used this Buffalo in a hammock and on the deck now, I think it is better on the ground, Still warm in a hammock with underquilt (of course) just a bit restrictive in a a hammock. All the best Bex...

Perhaps its as a result of the 'lockdown' or even the invasion of Ukraine, but trying to obtain a Buffalo 4S inner (in small) is proving nigh on next to impossible! I've emailed a half-dozen stockists around the UK, including the HQ in Sheffield! No luck yet. I'm hoping the company can put me on a waiting list....

They pop up on Ebay from time to time time (used) . (Heads up) they work best stripped to boxers, retains heat more effectively. Not a bag for a speedy get away (Having to get dressed) but nice out on the trail in a secluded area. Surprisingly compact, I will keep my eye open for you.....bex
