@VictoriaWilder13
@VictoriaWilder13 Ай бұрын
@@migmit Tara is defined as a powerful witch from birth (though not as powerful as Willow), who was raised by an abusive and misogynistic family, who was once so shy she could barely speak and is now one of the kindest, sweetest, most loving of the Scoobies. She's shown to be loyal and honest and just as brilliant as Willow. She's shown to make nerdy jokes and have an entire lexicon that only others who get her (as in HER girlfriend, Willow) can understand. She's a young woman who lost her mother, discovered her sexuality early on, and understands the nature of magic even better than Willow, by merit of growing up with it. Tara is just as much her own person as Oz. And, ya know, now that I think of it, we know more about her than we ever did about Oz. She's more of her own person, actually. (Though, Oz was still perfect and Willow had two beautiful loves for us to adore.)

One thing about Spike is how he's honestly the most human character sometimes and understands people better than most. In the Buffyverse having a soul is obviously super important for empathy. However in these two and the next two episodes it really highlights that if a vampire really tries they can feel. It's just the morals that are a bit dodgey

Yeah, Spike definitely can love but it is a love mixed with obsession. Wich actually shows the range of that emotion, posession, obsession, jelousy, spike is kinda of a dark side of love character because of his sould situation, he does love her but he really doesnt know how to love in a healthy way

I hadn't really thought about it that way in the past, but it does make sense... Which also makes me think that she may have been able to find Dawn by just delaying some "instant gratification" and hanging around the Scoobies herself while not at full strength, because it's kind of implied that the people she "mind-sucks" experience what she goes through when she needs to "feed" (especially based off of the monologue she gives while sitting on the bench with Tara). Obviously, I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but hopefully that made some bit of sense. Rachel MacDonald has a great KZbin video about Glory that everyone should check out.
@cajah88

Honestly, once Glory realized that the slayer knew about the key and what it was, she could have found it significantly earlier had she done any of the plans she did in the past 2 episodes earlier. If she tracked the Scoobies and mind drained one of them, she'd be ahead of schedule, lol. Buffy was lucky that Glory didn't operate that way from the start.
@J_Mock92
@J_Mock92 Ай бұрын
18:19 Willow is a lot more powerful than even she realizes. The Buffyverse has always had a "soft magic" system that serves the plot, but there have been several mentions in prior episodes that once you let that magic in, you "open a door," and being able to just say "thicken" after already casting the holding spell on Glory kind of says a lot. Willow can clearly channel a lot of magic after accessing it. Whether that's because it's "dark magick" or not..... Still

I love that Tough Love explores how Buffy views Giles like a father figure and wishes he could be that for Dawn as well. Also Tara saying she's terrified of how strong Willow is getting and Willow actually taking on Glory. This season really showed how Buffy truly has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Having to fight a god, dealing with the complexity of relationships, Loss of her mother and how everyone turns to her and she has to be a mother, a savior, a leader and doesn't get to just be Buffy. The moment when Tara opened the blinds and burned Spike. Spikes reaction knowing that she's not in her right mind is sort of comforting and he doesn't blame her, showing more humanity.

Dawn may be a love her or hate her character but I'm always impressed that the writers were able to take her from the "Huh?" moment at the end of episode 1 to this point in the season where (most of) the audience is genuinely invested in her. I saw someone call the willow/Tara argument “the nothing burger fight” because of how they felt the lesbian portion was shoehorned in but I see how willow feels insecure about everyone being “ahead of her” in regards to life events that classify one as an “adult” re: losing a parent or suddenly becoming one. She felt like she wasn’t helping and going HARD in magic is where she knows she excels… and willow needs to feel helpful, to feel secure and accepted. Keep it in mind! You guys are my favorite BTVS reactors right now, love this show so much!

Season 5 is a rollercoaster of emotions. 3 actors in these 2 episodes were in Buffy Of course Ben as the knight in paige's fairy tale. The doctor, the superior of Ben played district attorney who had sentenced Phoebe to death. And him, it was by looking at his face during your reaction, that I said to myself I saw him somewhere and that was the trigger. And the general Gregor who played a "vampire" detective demon who was after Cole

Thank you for once again adding energy and decent human emotion to the reacting/ rewatch experience. Excellent. BTVS is a difficult show to reacted if you are invested, intelligent and passionate. The dialogue is consistently witty, fast, and most importantly carries touchstones to our inner raw emotions. These 2 episodes were properly identified by a simple phrase my Buffy Buddies kept saying, “ how much more crap can Buffy take ?””. Besides the obvious list of burdens for Buffy don’t overlook: her Fathers total rejection of Buffy and Dawn. This was her first nightmare in Season 1, Episode 10. Once again a a prophecy in her dreams. Her dropping out of college to become a single “ mother”. She has now become Joyce, something she rejected but part of her duality experienced in Season 3. Finally , her typical Suburban life and plan has changed . Recall her conversation under the tree with Angel after the funeral. What’s next? She didn’t know but Joyce did. Buffy now must stare down life and can no longer take a break. She could accept The Slayer but now she is The Mother, The Provider, and you can see from these episodes, The Family Head. They all follow Buffy, look to guidance from Buffy, and are following what Buffy tells them. And she is 20 years old , a college dropout, a single Mom, and the soldier in the fight against evil.

Season five is consistently voted the best season for a reason. It really is a "hang on to your hats and glasses and keep your arms inside the vehicle at all times" sort of ride. When I see people react to the heartbreak of what happened to Tara, it gets me every time. Tara has been the one I wanted to protect since the episode Family, Willow having lost that place a while back. You'd think it would be Dawn, but Dawn had everyone protecting her. Especially Tara, even from season 5x02, when she chased the crazy guy away outside the Magic Box, and she did not yield to Glory, and only gave up Dawn when she'd lost her mind. Tara became the heart somewhere along the way, and I think Tough Love is where most people finally realize that. It isn't just that we love Tara and Willow as a couple, or really like Tara as a person. It's that we adore Tara. And she doesn't deserve this outcome because she is the kindest, sweetest person. So, while I'm sorry it hurt your hearts, I'm glad it hurt your hearts, because it shows how much you adore her, too. As for the other episode, "Look, it's Gregor. Now it's not." Is one of the most brutal, but best lines on Buffy ever. It is wicked dark, but funny. Appreciated your Kool-Aid call out.

People love to pile on Spike about being a soulless vampire that doesn’t understand love but I disagree. I believe he does love and has empathy and compassion. It gets skewed sometimes because he’s a demon and inherently evil but he does try. He wanted to comfort Dawn and he let Buffy know that Willow definitely was going for Glory and he was kind and patient with Tara and he saved Buffy by grabbing the sword. That doesn’t make up for his earlier evil misdeeds but he does show himself to have humanity in his heart when he wants to.
@J_Mock92
@J_Mock92 Ай бұрын
I agree. Spike may not "have a soul," but even his "soulless" self shows signs of empathy and compassion. The Buffyverse is a little willy nilly with the concepts of "souls" and humanity (the same way that it's always had a "soft magic" system), so I'm sure a lot of it is to just serve the story, but Spike and Drusilla make it pretty clear as early as Season 2 that vampires do feel and can love in this universe. Like when the Judge burns up one of their minions, but is unable to do the same to Angelus because he has "no humanity" to burn away. It's heavily implied (and essentially outrighted stated) that a person basically becomes the most self-serving version of themselves after being vamped. Spike was an incredibly sweet and sensitive person as a human, while Angel was already kind of a dick... Angelus is petty and cruel, because he was already selfish and exhibited those attributes as a human. It's only the guilt from all of the horrible things he'd done, that changed him after being re-ensouled... Spike on the other hand still felt that compassion and empathy, to at least some degree even without a "soul," because of how he was before being turned. His obsession with Buffy is like a skewed version of the feelings of infatuation and/or love that he would've experienced as a human. Angelus's obsession with Buffy is the same, but the difference is that William (Spike) was sweet and would've just been frustrated with himself or sad if rejected (I mean we see it with Cecily), whereas Liam (Angelus) likely would've acted out and sought revenge if the same thing happened to him. That's the way I've always seen it anyways 🤷

Cody & Siergio, something to keep in mind when watching the next two episodes is that they were billed as the series final when they aired as there was back stage drama going on where the show didnt appear it would be renewed for SE6. In the end the series stopped airing on The WB and moved to UPN for SE6 & SE7, well Angel remained on The WB for all 5 seasons. In 2001, UPN entered into a public bidding war to acquire Buffy the Vampire Slayer from The WB, when the network had chosen not to renew it due to increasing license fees. UPN eventually outbid The WB and aired it on Tuesday nights, until the series finale in 2003.

The Season is now reaching boiling point. In Spiral, Glory now knows Dawn is The Key. Spike turning up in the RV is funny with the slit in the front window. The scenes with The Knights chasing the RV and the ensuing fight is great. The mistake of getting Ben to come to treat Giles with of course the Scoobies not aware he is also Glory. The General explains to Buffy why it is all happening, and that there is no way to stop Glory unless The Key is destroyed. When Glory takes Dawn we can see Buffy becoming catatonic with stress. The build up to the finale is superb, and it does not disappoint.

I think we can understand Willow wanting to use her magic powers to avenge Tara, but we can see it's also getting out of control. Even though Glory is a very entertaining Big Bad we tend to forget how utterly cruel and evil she is. We are beginning to see the slight fracturing of the Tillow relationship, and once Glory now knows Dawn is the key it will be hard for the Scoobies to save her. You are in for three brilliant closing episodes to S5 with a superb, stunning finale unmatched in the whole show.

Yeah, Willow's a badass, but sometimes she can be just an ass. Her fight with Tara was entirely her blowing a turn of phrase into something major when instead of attacking Tara, she could have had a conversation. Also, you don't trust Ben because of his link with Glory, whatever it may be, but you gotta feel sorry for the guy waking up in the middle of town in that outfit

Yeah the problem with Willow is that she can't take criticism. She takes it as a personal attack or jealousy. She's controlled by her emotions, that's dangerous. Tara like Giles knows magic and what it can do to people. I remember the episode where her words became reality and she almost got everyone killed or when she pulled out that resurrection book for Dawn. Her judgment has been corrupted for a while now.

@@user-dx2dm8oq8g Willow especially cannot face the idea that she is being too careless with magic - her identity is now tied so closely to her use of magic that she automatically deflects any criticism of that. Tara was scared of how powerful Willow was becoming in terms of magic use, and Willow has on more than one occasion ignored warnings about using magic too freely; unable to face that fear of Tara's, Willow turns it into a discussion of her own insecurity regarding her orientation, when that was not at all what Tara was trying to say.

You're like an episode or so away from the biggest memey moment of the season :) But I'm not going to say anything.....or am I.... am I by saying nothing....saying everything? What was I saying again? Something about nothing...or...everything?

I love all the small moments of taking care of each other, like Xander lighting Spike’s cigarette, and Spike not getting mad at Tara lighting him on fire because he’s used to taking care of crazy women

The gag about about SPIRAL was Buffy was acting out of emotion in this episode as a sister and not the slayer. Buffy has admitted herself after growth and maturity into being an Adult that if she had to make the same decision again, she would have protected the mutliverse and peacefully unalived Dawn. It is a nonbrainer countless trillions + or Dawn, you don't have to be a slayer to make the right decision even if it sucks.

I honestly get this point, but i also hate it lol Buffy's uniqueness is her humanity. She's not some robot slayer all about the mission. A hero who refuses to sacrifice their loved one to save the world? That's complex and interesting and someone I can sympathize with. So her being willing to sacrifice dawn if she had to do it over again was always a bummer to me. Like, I DO get it. Objectively, it's absolutely the right choice to make. I just think it takes away a lot of warmth and relatability from Buffy's character (but that's an issue I had with her that entire season, when we get there).

@ all of the slayers are created to be like this so we can have the privilege to not make those choices . We are all flawed and human and that’s why we would make the emotional decision over the most ethical or logical . Slayers live sacrifice , why go out seek danger when they can live comfortable and protect themselves ? The world would end a thousand times over . Like cabin in the woods that end was maddening ! I understand your point but i definitely know I could make the decision. I would carry it but I would do the right thing .

I love how it takes Spike to get through Buffy's naive over-confidence, her certainty that because she explained to Willow why it was pointless - Willow would not go after Glory. Spike has always seen right through all of them, he's very perceptive except when it comes to himself. :P Willow's and Tara's fight felt very natural to me, even if it broke my heart. The witchcraft being an analogy for sexuality. Tara has worked magic all her life, she's always known... Willow is just discovering who she is... and she has insecurities around that. She got very upset over her own assumptions, with no real indication that Tara ACTUALLY questioned her commitment. It's very sad and of course this show gives us the most tragic possible timing. Spiral - it's chaotic. There's a lot going on. Like you said - unnecessary. :P Except that's kind of the point, as things spin more and more wildly out of control until Buffy really just doesn't know what to do. "Those sound like goodbye words" - because Joss Whedon is incredibly cruel. :P LOL Totally on purpose. Everything spiraled into chaos. Buffy is broken. Dawn is with Glory... darkest before the... well, you know. :P

So, saying this now that I know you’re past it on Patreon. Angel 2x19 very deliberately takes place before Buffy 5x20, chronologically. The SlayAlive guide messes this up, and it upsets me every time a reactor reaches this point.

I love buffy and this season was going to be its last because WB and UPN were fighting for the rights to the show and UPN won so this season is the last for the WB. Season 6 and 7 moved to UPN. I so what you guys to watch MTV Teen Wolf after your done with Buffy that show is like Buffy in a way and it's so good being both a Movie turned TV show and did you guys ever watch the Buffy movie? I just love that movie!
