Very disturbing detail: You can find spears littered on the ground in Giant's Lair, a sign that the wasps have been there. When we see the Wasp King in front of the door, there are a handful of wasp troopers by his side who enter the lair with him. When we see him again, he is alone. Those wasp troopers didn't make it.

I think that happened because since Hoaxe was already at the finish line, it didn't really matter to him if his Troopers died. They were simply there to make things easier for him. At that point, it didn't matter if they lived or died, because if the Sapling was already within his reach, everybody in Bugaria would be his slaves. An entire kingdom sure beats the hell out of a couple of troopers

After looking through the telescope at the bee kingdom and hearing that I had to go through the "giant's lair" I assumed this level would just be like going through a normal human's house as the size of bugs and in the first room I thought to myself "ha imagine if you had to fight the owner's cat or something that'd be crazy" and then I went into the second room and saw the giant eyeball and I assumed it was a cat's eye because of the line pupil so I was like "wait I was actually right!?" And then it spotted me and the bony hand came from above and I was like WAIT A MINUTE THAT'S NOT A CAT

This moment genuinely terrified me. You never really think about how every structure in the game is crafted from various objects from the human world until you see them strewn about, completely untouched. Pencils, books, toys, you name it. You finally feel the weight of just how small you truly are, and that coupled with the powerful abominations that swarm the land, the one-eyed watchers with boney, almost skeletal hands and this music that doesn't stop playing even in battles makes for a truly horrifying experience. And I enjoyed every minute of it. I love a game that can legitimately make me hesitate and fear what comes next.

Moreover, it really drives up the mystique of the giants. What were they doing in there? Are the dead lands 'deadness' and abominations connected to the awakening? If so, why is it a relatively normal looking human home, with no sign of advanced technology?

When I first looked into that telescope, I knew that this place wasn't gonna be a so happy place. When I got spotted for the first time my first reaction was to throw myself into a pit because I didn't want to know what it was going to do to me. The most dreadful part was when I noticed that the windows were boarded up: the bugs didn't do that. The scariest thing of all would be to know foe how long has that carton of milk been sitting there.

This was the exact same reaction when I saw the entire world map was really just the backyard of a house. I was flabbergasted, because the world felt massive, and it was the first time I realized how small the characters were... which was when I saw the massive boarded up house, and knew that something was off. Still I expected a run down house... Not literal Cthulu. I suppose that's what I love about this kind of horror: suddenly Cthulu! Favourite area of the game, hands down.

The first time I got in this area, I wilingly let me spotted by the thing just to see how hard the monster could be and also thinking that they couldn't be that hard, after the first turn just buffing Vi and seeing Kabbu being one turn, I just had one thing in my head "oh my fucking god I'm going to have a really bad time if every monster in this zone are that strong", and yeah, the last fight with dead landers made me panicked immediatly when I saw I needed to fight the 3 dead landers at the SAME TIME. (well, I had food so that wasn't that bad but when I did again after the final boss, I forgot to take item so I kinda died 10 times before using the buble shield light + taunt strat)

Legitimately my favorite video game location, ever. It's the only video game area where when they refer to it as a "dangerous and feared location", it actually feels justified. There's so much creepy shit going on here, and the funniest thing is that the entire area was just in the fucking kitchen of the house. All the other rooms probably have their own creepy shit going on. Also the coolest thing to me really is that this is just a house. Nothing special about it itself, it's a normal ass house, that is fucking cool. If this shit lurks in this one random house (one room in the house actually), imagine what is in other houses. What abominations lie in places like the Paris catacombs? But for real, amazing atmosphere.

It's the kinda place that you want to leave as soon as possible but also feel trapped in. Such a tonal sucker punch compared to even the boss directly before this, truly didn't expect this from the final area but I'm so glad they did it.

I love how the team straight up agrees with themselves to never discuss the massive creature stalking them. I love how this feels like an abandoned, depressed house - even outside of the context of being a bug in said house, it makes me wonder what happened to the people that lived there.. It is said that a massive crystal that fell into the forsaken lands keeps the giants away, but what does that mean for the person who lived in this area? Did they die? Did they run away? Is that a bird that stalks you? Why does it drop other, mutated creatures onto you instead of killing you itself..? There are so many questions, but I think I'm fine with there never being answers. Like the Guardians discussed in the secret area of Upper Snakemouth, maybe it's best to just leave it up to interpretation.

Something about this felt so...somber at this point in the game. Everything was either happy go lucky or at the very worst, mysterious. This though, just wreaked of depressing feelings. The watcher with his skeleton-human like hands, the “creatures” you can fight that barely even resemble bugs anymore. It’s not only a sad, cold, dull place, but also obviously an old home. The home of a kind forgotten. Areas like this are the exact reason Bug Fables will always have a spot right there alongside the first two paper mario games as one of my favorite RPG games of all time. Not just because of it being similar, but also having it’s own identity and beautifully crafting atmosphere such as this. Please buy this game if you haven’t already.

This place left a LASTING impact on me. It’s already terrifying enough with this incredibly eerie music that only stops playing if you get caught by the Watchers, which fills you with a whole other sense of dread as this massive spider..thing that looks completely out of place compared to anything else in this game is dropped on you from above and your only real option is to flee and try and get away from it, but then as you listen to the dialogue and hear the characters talk about the “giants” that used to live here and how they just..disappeared one day and you look at all the boarded up windows, it really hits you how insane this place really is. This was a normal human house that, for some reason, they felt the need to board up the windows and doors but then they disappeared so suddenly that their trash and other objects were just left lying about. What kind of event would cause something like that to happen? Does this happy-go-lucky sweet little game about a team of bugs helping their queen take place in a world where humans have been erased from existence? Why do the roaches call it “the day of reckoning” when everyone else thinks of it as a celebratory event where bugs began to live longer and gain the ability to talk and feel and grow? What purpose do these strange creatures that now inhabit the house have? Just what are the Watchers and why are they ten times the size of any other creatures in the game? What lies on the other side of this house that hasn’t yet been discovered by the residents of Bugaria and the surrounding areas? I don’t know if we’ll ever get these answers but I really hope there’s more areas similar to the Giant’s Lair in the sequel to this game, because this place completely blew me away.

Only 10 times the size?!? That... *_thing,_* the dead lander Ω (it is confirmed to be one singular entity), is insanely massive (the silhouette you can see from the eliascope belongs to it, and its height is nearly level with a tree branch[!!]), the developers themselves have stated that the other dead landers fear it just as much as team snakemouth does... and yet, it seems curious? Maybe playful even? When you knock the stone down into its line of vision it picks it up... almost like a small child would pick up a toy... and when it spots team snakemouth it places a dead lander Y right next to them, like it wants to see what happens, or just thinks it's amusing... The thing is absolutely terrifying, but it's behaviour seems almost childlike... Does it know what it's doing is harming us? Does it know how it is terrifying to everyone? Does it even care? It's supposedly the size of an adult human, and we crush bugs like they're nothing all the time. The most horrifying conclusion I have come to is that dead lander Ω is potentially a mutated human child. A young one at that. Something horrific has almost certainly taken place, but we may never know what it was. The disappearance of the giants (humans) is highly unusual too, adding to the mystery... ...Seems I went on a bit of a rant there. Whoops.

@@poisonedmaple6874 here's my theory at some point or another, a nuclear war broke out. That'd explain the hasty "Preperations" and deterioration around the house. If the big creature IS a human child mutated, then radiation could possibly explain it. Humans disappearing like that would mean they got a decent distance away from bugaria. On a human scale, that would only mean a decent run in a single direction for 50~ seconds... Makes you think.

There is something that I noticed replaying this game. Something that makes the deadlands truly terrifying is what happens just before crossing into it. Venus says that she can't help Team Snakemouth after they go beyond the border. Venus has been watching them ever since the beginning, but now they're going into a place where her protection doesn't reach. This is terrifying to me because of religious symbolism. In Christian doctrine, there is only one place that God is separate from. One place where his light doesn't shine. That place is hell. And as such, crossing into the deadlands can be seen symbolically as a descent into hell. I don't think any of the devs intended this, but it sends chills down my spine to think about.

I wasn't sure how the game was going to get darker after Upper Snakemouth, and I was expecting the Giant's Lair to be foreboding, but I was still surprised at just how dark this area was. The enemy design is alien and freakish, the giant monster that searches for you is creepy, what the whole area implies is dark, and this music... damn. I think what sets Giant’s Lair apart from other “tiny creature encounters humans” stories like Finding Nemo is that humans aren’t the main threat. They’re a previous victim. Whoever was living here clearly wasn’t doing well; boarded up windows, trash strewn all over the floor, they were either so scared of something getting in that they eventually abandoned their own house..or it got them before they got the chance. And that’s what makes the place so deeply terrifying from the perspective of a bug: If there’s something out there that can make a creatures a thousand times their size terrified for it’s life, what chance does Bugaria have if it comes back?

Not like the ones the ants used to block the entrance to Giant's Lair, these are, well, giant-sized. Considering the place is undeniably a house, and the fact that the Lost Sands are merely just a forgotten sandbox, indicated by the tall barriers surrounding it, it's likely that Giant's Lair was home to not only 'giants', but possibly even children as well? And considering the barred window, typically used to keep something out, and what's in there now... Oh dear.

The only sense I can make of it is that it’s whatever the humans were trying to keep out by boarding up the windows, and it found a way in to a house with humans that weren’t alive for much longer, given that it uh, is even still in the house, and there’s so much rotten food. The people who lived here clearly didn’t die of starvation.

Y’know, I am genuinely enamored by the tone of this piece. I think most musicians would’ve sat down and composed a tune that has a lot of distorted synthesizers with a dramatic vibe. As a specific reference, I expected to hear a song like the one that played when Mario entered through The Thousand Year Door. So when I heard this for the first time after walking through the environment...I just paused. I had, and still have, this feeling that I just can’t put into words about what the song is saying about the world. The piano has very basic major chord progressions that reminds me of a nursery rhyme...and that’s okay! I’m not trying to degrade the song’s quality! But for a while, it really sat and brewed in my head about what image it’s painting, and I feel it’s along the lines of representing what was once a normal house. A place of safety. Of comfort. Where there’s children toys of stuffed teddy bears, pencils, and books. And those things are still there...but there’s now a menacing presence that looms over. That horn with an extremely low voice overlays itself over the piano, and chokes whatever comfort one could’ve felt if they listened to the piano melody on its own. Now, this horn has warped this piece into something that sounds like an omen, and as an outsider, we can only observe at what once was, what could’ve been, and the horrors that it’s become... I’ve been really curious in knowing how some of these pieces came out to be the way they are. Sometimes musical composers work independently on projects like this and have whatever they compose approved by the director with little to no scrutiny, while other directors have been more involved with the musical composition process and are much more picky. I wonder if the composer was given concept art and story details to get an idea of what the tone should be, or if there was a lot of collaboration with the director regarding the specific tone/theme that needed to be reflected in the piece. Regardless, this song is a piece of art. It’s one that didn’t feel it needed to be bombastic just because it’s the end of the game, but is one that has opted to be somber and convey how we should be feeling seeing a home like ours be left in ruins; wondering what transpired that left this home in the state that it’s in... Edit: Now that I listen more closely, I think that “horn” I was referring to is actually a bass clarinet

Alone, in my living room, only the light of other room is on, at 1am, all my family seems to have already fallen asleep; for some miracle they didn't told me to "go to sleep already". It was just I, the team, this environment, this got darn spectacular music, and my genuine FEAR of the deadlanders. As Casey from Brohive said, "This is the only part of the game that makes you *feel* like a bug". I love every aspect of this game, yet nothing will ever compare to the funny bug game throwing this at me, and everything been so perfect, and I been so DETERMINED to beat king's ass.

One of my favorite parts about this is that this is only a surprise to the _player_. To the bugs of Bugaria, Omega is just a fact of life. To Team Snakemouth, this was always something they were going to have to face as soon as they learned that the Sapling was in the Giant’s Lair. Heck, Kabbu is FROM the deadlands (not the Giant’s Lair though. Everywhere beyond Bugaria is considered Deadlands, and the beetles live north of Bugaria. He crossed through the swampland, then the sandbox, to reach the Ant Kingdom.) Kabbu, Master and Bit just... LIVED with these things. Omega OPENLY LEAVES HIS LAIR. YOU CAN SEE HIM SKULKING AROUND BEYOND THE GRASS. It’s just accepted that there are horrible behemoths lurking all over the world and the only thing keeping them at bay is the Mother Crystal in the Forsaken Lands.

I think the creepiest thing is that they all know about Omega but they avoid talking about it entirely. Outside of the dialogue inside of the lair itself, not a single character mentions omega. Despite this, according to Mar (one of the devs) "everybody knows about omega". The deep lore of this game fascinates me. It's moments like this that make you stop, and think... What happened? To Humanity, to the Giants? To the Roach civilization? What happened to cause the world's insects to spontaneously gain sentience? Are there other Giants out there, in the beyond? Or has Humanity been completely wiped out? Something happened to destroy the Roaches, something abrupt... Does the Everlasting Sapling have more negative side effects than are currently known of? The thing is... there are no answers. Inside a house there is something vast, something skeletal, something inhuman which watches and waits. In a forgotten corner there lives a small group of Roaches, protecting something that brings power beyond your wildest imagination and uncontrollable, irreversible mutation and transformation. They do not even know that the sapling they guard has been dead, possibly for generations. Did it kill their people, or was it the only thing that kept their people alive once? Their histories do not say, their eldest elders do not remember a time when they had such answers. Beneath the outskirts of the Ant Kingdom there is a laboratiry where two scientists tried to reverse the fortunes of their civilization after a calamity that is never fully explained. Uncountable blue crystals litter the landscape, their origins unknown, their powers limitless, and their use perhaps barely understood. And all across the lands, bugs... thousands of bugs, live lives, form cultures, build civilizations, advance technology... when did this happen? Why? How? The thing is... there are no answers. The deep lore of this game fascinates me.
