Man thanks, this is so far the best review focused on apartment/bedroom level sound discussion. I have bought PRS MT 15 amp and 60 watt 1x12 cabinet, and still even on half mode amp sounds sou loud that it even damages ears, master volume at low level did not help a lot because sound changes in that case. Attenuator is needed even with such an amp. Cheers!

I picked up a Marshall DSL100H in immaculate condition for $600 locally and once hook it up to 5 on the ultra-gain channel. Once I got my ears to stop bleeding I researched attenuators, then saw this. Thank you Count Euge 👍👌

@davespin9034Ай бұрын
@ I’m not sure you need an attenuator. Your amp has the master volume which takes the boosted dimed output and runs it through the master. My DSL100H does not have this. I had a deposit for months on the DSL100HR and got tired of waiting on the backorder.

I just got a used Mesa Boogie F100 head and oversized 4 X 12 and it goes from 0 to blow your ears out at the slightest touch of the volume. Like you said at bedroom levels there is almost no bass but even with the volume at 1 it's too loud. I have ordered this attenuator and when it gets here I can finally hear what this beast should sound like without the cops at my door.

It's not loud enough once you're jamming with a drummer. When it's in the 50 watt setting, it's loud enough to where I can't turn the amp up too loud. LOL, we all know that Marshall (and other high gain amplifiers) don't sound good at bedroom level - they want to screw it all the way up, much to the chagrin of our neighbors! At one time, I used a Marshall Powerbrake PB100, but that does not mean that all the knobs should be at 10 and that after a whole day of gigging, day after day, nothing bad will happen to the amplifier. Oh yes, it will. And the attenuator heats up a lot, so you shouldn't use cheap things from the leading equipment group. As always Euge, an excellent and instructive post.

I have one too. Great explanation. Couple days experiment with it and you got it down. You found the pros and cons. Yes, the PS1 will get plenty hot with a Marshall JCM 800 that are known to output 135 to 140watts. It is a "passive" soak. That means the wire-wound ceramic resistors will reduce the extra watts [power] by releasing heat. Just like a toaster. It is a reasonable option for a lot less cash when on a budget. Even safer and cooler with a 50watter or less. Like you said, it cuts you down 50% from the start which may put some off. I have used it on a 1watt Marshall, a HiWatt Hi-5, and other 5watters, an Orange OR-15, Marshall DSL-20, Marshall 1987 50watt, and the 1959 Plexi 100watt with decent results. It does take some time dialing it into the amps gain structure to fit with your particular settings for optimum results.

That could also be interpreted that you have to have a cabinet and PS1 or just the cabinet. I did some research from various sources / sites and Thomann states that you can’t use it without a cab. On some review the reviewer stated he tried it without a cab and the line out sounded horrible then and the unit made strange noises so he stopped the ”experiment” immediately. My stereo rig for 20 years now consists of 2 Diezel Herberts: Both a Mk1 and a Mk2 180 WATT heads. I use only two rack gear units for effects. A primary TC Electronic G-Major and a secondary TC Electronic G-Force for backup. The only effect between my guitar output and the input to my stereo Herbert rig is my Dunlop Crybaby Classic WAH - a KISS option. I was using 2 Bugera PS1 Soakers inline for each Herbert until it dawned on me that since I am always running through my TCEs, I can ditch the Bugera altogether. The simple fact that inherent to TCEs built-in attenuation setting in the "ALL LEVELS" block. Simply, it is the "Global Out Level" and the output range is off at (-100dB) ranging through to 0dB full level. This sets the overall output level of the G-Major/G-Force. As the parameter name states, this level is global and therefore not stored with presets. Using the Global Out level as overall volume for your guitar setup, instant volume control of your entire rig. It's much nicer and comforting knowing that my rig is "more pure" now, but if you don't have "transparent" rack gear such as TC Electronic gear is known for their "transparency", then for $100x2 (for stereo rigs) you cannot go wrong. But beware, you don't want to push these little guys much beyond 100W or you may be soaking some unwanted smoking in the room. They do rock, but I do notice a slight bit more "clarity" without the Bugeras when pushed hard. Plus, I like to hear my 12x JJ-KT77s in their full 35mA hot glowing glory... Live and rock on learning! Most of these no-reactive load boxes are technically the same ( bugera,Harley Benton,jet city) just a few high watt resistors and high watt potentiometer. The reactive versions have also coils and capacitors in it to mimic a speaker more, hence the higher price. But also these are just an approximation of a real speaker and not perfect

Hi Euge, can you point me to portals or websites where I can buy St.Rock React: IR impulse loader? I'm from Poland and I couldn't find anything here. There is also nothing on German eBay Kleinanzeigen. For home recording with 100w tube amplifiers is the golden grail 😀👍 Anyway, your videos are great. Lots of very good news. 👍👍👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸🎸

@EugeValovirta230V3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah sure if you can put it between the amp and the speaker 👌. Don’t remember how that combo is wired but some combos have jacks so that you can use external speaker, unplug the combo speaker etc.

You’re tone is killer for metal. Period! I’m not sold on the Bugera. I guess I’m going to have to buy one, try it, and decide for myself. I play a Marshall late 70’s JMP #2204 and it’s “magical.” So, I assume I’ll get similar tones to your #2203, just not as LOUD! I’d just like to be able to crank my amp without always performing for the neighbors. Thanks Euge, for all the great videos! ✌🏼 *SUBBED*

The volume difference in 50 vs 100 watt amplifiers is only about 3 db which is almost negligible, 100 watters are not 50% louder than 50 watters. Other factors come into play though such as more headroom with 100 watters. Personally I run all 50 watt tube amps purely by chance too. 1981 Marshall JCM 800 2204, 1993 Ampeg VL-502, 1966 Fender Bandmaster and a 1976 Fender Super Reverb all 50 watters though the Fenders are 40 watts each. But get the Bugera on sale at Sweetwater for only $69.99 and FREE shipping, you can't go wrong. Luckily I have always had attenuators though, the Ampeg VL's all have them built in and my JCM 800 was modded with a push/pull master volume 2 attenuator by Lee Jackson in the 80's.

Does this allow you to record with little to no volume coming out of the cab, or do you need some significant signal coming out of the cab in order to have a strong signal going to your recording interface?

hey man, thanks for the detailed review, does it compromise sound, esp compared to the same cranked level on the Amp to the cab themself? I cannot judge via YTB vids listening via headphones :D
@EugeValovirta230V2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah of course, like with all attenuators, cos the speakers doesn’t get the full power. It’s so minimal that I don’t care ’cos I don’t record with an attenuator on but just for reducing the volume at home, rehearsals etc. these does the job just fine👌😎.

I have a 6505+ and have been debating one of these. I'm just worried the head will fry it . How hot was it when you were pushing past 5 ?
@EugeValovirta230V4 жыл бұрын
I run my Marshall’s usually past 5 (usually many hours / day) and they’ve been fine ’cos they were designed for that 😎. Obviously they are hot but a tube amp should be. I hardly turn my original 5150 past five ’cos after that it just gets mushy. But on my scandinavian 800s the sweet spot is between 2-3 and it’s about the same than 5-6 on a ”standard” 800: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3qZn4ePeKqjjNU So the Master volume sweet spot is different even on similar amps 😊.

Hello there, i heard that if you have 100wat heat (i do, dsl 100h)you really need to be carefull cranking it with power soak cause you may fry it. Cause it's limit is 100w and cranked Marshall 100w amp can go well above that..
@EugeValovirta230V3 жыл бұрын
That could be the case especially with old Marshalls (Plexi especially) but I really haven’t found the need to crank them fully up. Around noon is usually the sweet spot for me 👌😎.

Thanks for your awesome video! I have a question: I use a Engl Powerball II (100 watt) and I uss it with master at 1 at home without too much volume. I use the 4 channels of the head and it has nice sound. Do I really need a power soak? I mean, using power soak and using the master at 5 should I get a better sound even on distortion channels or I need it only to crank the clean and get power tubes distortion? Thanks!
@EugeValovirta230V3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I guess those modern amps sound ok without pushing the power tubes but IMO any amp will sound better when you get some of that good ol’ power tube mojo in there. The amps just become more alive and especially with older amps (Plexis, 800s etc.) it’s pretty much a must or the tone could be quite thin. But if it sounds good, it’s good 😎
@danielblank67173 жыл бұрын
I bought this a while ago and tried it with my 100 watt plexi. After about 3 minutes it started smoking so I stopped and didn’t try again out of fear for my amp. Defective unit maybe?
@EugeValovirta230V3 жыл бұрын
Oh damn. I haven’t had any problems but my Plexi is only 50 watts and since 100w Plexi puts out actually a lot more than 100w when cranked it might be the case. 100w Plexi is a beast and easily the loudest amp I’ve ever played and I’ve played / own quite a few 😎. I mean my 50 watt 1987x is louder than my Peavey 5150 block letter cranked 😁.
