A small collection of bugs and glitches from DooM 2 (v1.666). I made videos for over NINE HOURS today, and I broke my record filesize-wise. 194,7 MByte. The best thing: My MacBook went into standby while I already uploaded 110+ MByte. This sucks ass!!
Unfortunately, DOSBOX' output is very poor in contrast, and the M4V export made it even worse, but it is still enjoyable.

The "infinite sound range" bug in MAP08 was intentional: in Doom I, map 8 of any episode was the boss level, so the engine deliberately disables sound range so you can hear where the boss monster is. They however didn't disable the handler in Doom II, so that slot always has infinite sound range.

I always thought the double door sound at 4:02 was intentional, i found it really weird when later engines fixed it. Awesome video

The most obvious is that when you punch, the enemies can hear you, and you're just punching the air, not even a wall or something, that is strange.

It's more of a limitation than a bug. Coding a different weapon handling routine just for the fist would be more work for little gain. Instead it just uses the usual "Weapon fired, Monsters awake" routine all the other weapons use. That said, some mods do make the fist (And other noiseless weapons, if available) silent so there you go.

@@DinnerForkTongue I wasn't aware of that! Strife really pushed the Doom engine to its limits. I didn't get to play it yet but I'll see if I can soon. I got my Laptop working again after cleaning it and Installing manjaro. GZDoom works like a charm and I can even hook it up to my TV and play with a controller. Nice stuff.

@@mhfiver2441 Yeah, as soon as I discovered X/Y sprite billboarding I began to enjoy GZDoom for the awesome port that it is. And Strife is definitely worth playing, underrated as hell.

I wouldn't call the HOM effect a bug, just an engine design choice that saves on processing time, considering that clearing the screen is an expensive operation, and seeing that you should always see a wall, ceiling or floor, it should never appear normally. However, the fact that the HOM appears at 5:20 I would consider a map design bug rather than an algorithm problem.

I just watched through all part and realized I've probably played Doom 2 way too much as kid. I recognized pretty much all "vanilla wad" bugs. Lol actually many of them I didn't think about as bugs until now seeing these from vid later on in this context :) Huge respect for Id for making so groundbreaking game, but with so little groundbreaking bugs.

yeah i thought it was intentional too, being able to know when a door has closed automatically just by sound was useful for a few maps when i first played doom

My theory that on a level titled "Tricks and Traps" The sound 'glitch' was intentional.

It's a leftover from Doom1, where sound behaves the same way on the 8th map. Probably an oversight since it's so harmless/hard to notice.

For those people who are wondering if the bug in Alien Vendetta's map 20 will make it unplayable: you cannot even get near the spot where the visplanes will overflow. Kim Malde did his best to give the player a sense of being outdoors despite being beneath sand (as can be seen at the start of the map) so reaching the spot in particular will not only crash the game, it will also not even look good.

I think a simple way to trigger the visplanes problem is simply to make a chessboard-like pattern on the floor and ceiling. Make the whole place chequered like that and you'll soon have an unusable map. But that Alien mod map looked interesting.

The HOM effect can be visible in many games (Any game that doesn't "erase" the frame buffer before redrawing the scene (Most probably for performance reasons.) especially when going out of bounds. It's strangely hypnotizing watching the textures shimmer around, (Which only happens on double/triple buffered engines, btw.) but it can be potentially dangerous if you're epileptic. Funny enough, the HOM effect is fixed on most modern source ports. (At least on GZDoom, which is OpenGL accelerated.)

HoM effect appears in a lot of IDtech based games, even in Quake 1-4, Doom 3, call of duty etc...

I just have to say... Alien Vendetta is hard, but I think it has some well-designed, Aesthetically pleasing maps... Like the pyramid level you showed here. That, by far, it the level I played most and one of my favourites in the WAD. xD

Map 8 sound bug is not a bug, it was made intentionally top hear the boss at any point on the map.

The sky map bug was fixed in some releases of Final Doom.

I remember that double close sound effect. I had one of the "earlier" versions of Doom II, one that had the bars still in front of the shotgunner on Underhalls

for some reason, I set my output format to 8-bit on OPL SYNTH EMULATION and restarted and it makes the game really loud for some reason, not sure if this is both Dos or windows 7 and other operating systems that doom can handle. The version I was using was Zdoom 2.3.1 r1480

The 'sky' bug used to drive me mental back in the days when I'd rush through as much of the game as possible before going to school. I'd notice something about MAP12 didn't look right, but didn't realise what it was for months. So obvious yet so subtle at the same time, as it doesn't alter the gameplay.

I honestly never even paid attention to the skies. Does it load the right sky for the level if you use the load game function instead of playing up to that level? If so, then you might suddenly notice the sky is different on loading a game.

The hom effect causes that the system tells that there is no texture is on that place

I have to say, when you shoot the SSG at the HOM corner, it looks really cool, like there's smoke coming out of the barrels. :D

@NoMac90 One of the things I want to do is play the Through the fire and flames MIDI through the SoundBlaster format on Duke3D. But the filesize is too big. Anything over 100kb wont play on Duke.

The not fixed bugs in the final version if doom are fixed in the source ports?

Yes, I think so. One of the reasons of sourceports was to eliminate bugs or limits that were in the original code of the game. As soon as the big junk of the sourcecode has been made public in 1997 (as far as I remember), there was no need to create ports for other platforms since Win95/98 had an underlying DOS.

the correct title of the background music with which you are enquiring, is named "ROBOTER" and it is by tax 5. love is a danger doesnt return any results when i search for it :)

cool bugs do you remember a bug where if you warped to a different level from the automap, the game would crash? it might be from a different doom version though

No worries. Not sure if it occurs in all versions of the game, as I was watching a different video not long after yours and there were bullet puffs on raised sectors. Might have been something to do with a source port, maybe?

When I am playing I can't warp to map08 because the dosbox is bullshit. So when I press 0 the dosbox won't do anything for example: I'm tiping idmus00 and the game crashes and I'm tiping idclev08 the dosbox won't do anything. Another example when I played Prehistorik 2 I couldn't type password sometimes because the code contains 0 WHY?

Unnamed Player What kind of keyboard do you use? Maybe there is a problem with the layout. DOSBOX mounts the US QWERTY keyboard layout. As German, I have to press "Z" in order to get "Y". For example: "Do you want to quit the game? Y/N" I need to hit "Z". Not to speak of backslash (\) which is on the same button like "ß", which does not exist at all on the QWERTY and gives me random BS. Try to load a different keyboard setting and if that helps, add it to the autoexec.bat

***** Thanks! I'm using hungary keyboard. I tried everything and I pressed the "ö" button and there is no more problem. Now i can write 0 in this game. When I was 8 years old I couldn't quit from dos games because I pushed "y" and the game didn't quit. But my teacher said that : "Push Z instead of Y"

If you change the audio settings you can have way better music quality (16bit rather than 8bit)

I haven't read all the comments, but the bullet puffs on external walls is only on walls that aren't 'solid'. The puffs don't appear on walls that are actually raised sectors, such as the part where you were firing at the chaingunners up on the wall. Don't know why though!

I had a "visplane overflow" and "no more visplanes" happen to me while playing FreeDoom 0.9 (Phase 1). I guess it wasn't designed for vanilla?

This is an old video, but.... When the #9 track of the PSX OST of Doom (kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3eWi5KnhMh4h68) is sped up, it sounds like it says "1081". When Googling "Doom 1081", it comes up with a brief description of the chainsaw not making the right sound when brought up. (tracker.skyjake.fi/issues/1081) Kind of a strange question, but is that what the music is referring to?

6:00 thats not a bug, its autoaim that is shooting targets above you in front of you, also check my channel for a serious bug on the psx version of doom.

Smoke doesnt appear outside?? Im pretty sure when shooting the wall u were shooting. It was aiming up to hit monsters on a higher floor...

I found a Chocolate Doom bug! If you run nuts.wad with it, the immortality colors are messed up and you can noclip!! (W00T!)

I think that's the all ghosts effect, it rarely happens in vanilla gameplay, but can be replicated wit custom maps, if you know how.

+Martin Varela I got these bugs from the Wikipedia page and they are verified. Also, there is AFAIK no limit of bullet "puffs" or at least not when a Chaingunner and the player fire at the same time.

i was gonna point out the same thing since there definitely is a heavy weapons dude shooting you off-screen. Your puffs most likely hit it. that being said I still believe there's a legit bug like that :D

Why'd you respond to him with a different comment? I know you're desperate for attention. Besides, who in the right mind uses the mouse in DOS DOOM? Unless it's for testing purposes, if you actually PLAYED REGULARLY with a mouse in Vanilla Doom, shame on you.

the demos recorded by romero uses turning so smooth and quick it's not possible to do with keyboard, he also uses mouse for death match, the manual says that you would have a better time using mouse and keyboard. so, next time do your research. wanna prove me wrong? do your worst, internet.
