RIP Bugs, one of the greatest ever. I first saw Bugs in 1971 at a free Nitzinger concert at Lee Park in Dallas. I was amazed to see they had a girl playing the drums, not real common in those days. Here she is again back playing with the Bugs. I could go on and on with stories about the times I've seen Bugs but I guess I'll just say thanks for all the memories. I just wish I had seen him playing more. Same thing with Stevie Ray, I saw them both about 7 or 8 times, not nearly enough.

As a nineteen year old Vietnam vet,just back home in Oak Cliff.I first heard Bugs at the Cellar at Commerce and Central in Dallas. Now I'm an old man and Bugs is still kicking ass. I've jammed with his bass player Kieth and that guy can do things unreal. Kirby Kelly is fabulous as a solo act on acoustic slide and great vocals. I gotta see those guys together Live.

Got to see Bugs damned near weekly when he was guitarist for the Cellar's house band in Dallas in '68 - '69. Hell that's the main reason we went . . . well that and watching the occasional drunk or just showy girl strip onstage.

I used to drink with Bugs when he played ant the now defunct Pearl's Oyster Bar in Austin, Texas. Now Joe Bonamuso has filled Bug's legacy and taken it to where it needs to be. Unsung legends that ARE the real deal.
@garyjackson35319 ай бұрын
Pearl's didn't take reservations, but we brought so many with us when Bugs played, they'd reserve tables for us. Man he would put on a show! We probably ran across each other there. Also saw him play the band's sweet sixteen gig at Poor David's Pub over on Lower Greenville, in Dallas, and at The Waterworks in Waco. Man I miss Pearl's. Saw Bugs play at Sneaky Pete's and the Bijou in Dallas when I lived there in the early 80's it was a 3 piece both times if I remember right. Watching this video I had forgotten how great he really was and I have never seen a guy play with 2 slides at the same time that was great as well.
@vinniebarusa24 күн бұрын
The Bijou, right off northwest highway close to Abrams/Skillman. Later became Cardis, where David Crosby got busted by the Dallas PD and ended up spending more time in Texas than he had initially planned. I remember this in real time from the 80's. As a side note, U2 also performed there and that area is now an Applebees. I guess all good things come to an end.

Being from Dallas, Bugs played a big part in my early influences on guitar. Rocky Athas too. Bugs was great to listen to even though I never was able to see him live, only on the January Sound studio jams that went on late night on Q102 or was it 98FM? Anyway, in my musical travels, I got to play at Robin Hood Bryan studios in Tyler, and even recorded a few tracks with ex "mouse and the traps" keyboard player! RIP Bugs!

I'm sure that Bugs is a great guy and the music is beautiful. Where are the Black Blues men and women in the blues bands? It will be a great day when we all can just play and just be. My question disturbs me, but I see the pattern so often. The music is so deeply buried in the lives and sufferings of Black people and the music dies a slow death. Each group should do their part to keep Black people connected to this music. A tree torn from its roots will soon die. Peace!!
