Raising beef and dairy also uses up enormous amounts of water and fresh water is becoming a global issue as increased shortages are predicted for the future

Third world countries need to get their populations in order. The planet can't sustain unlimited growth and those who are "taking more than their fair share" when it comes to population growth are all in third world countries. Developed countries need to stop sending money, aid, food, etc. to those countries. All of our "charity" is exacerbating the problem --a ticking time bomb we will eventually have to deal with. Programs like this documentary are setting the foundation for the message in the future of "it's ok to eat bugs, they are high in protein, etc." A statement that may be true, but is insulting to the people of the West who have always eaten chicken, beef, pork, etc. And don't for one second believe that the super rich elites are going to eat bugs. They will still be eating filet mignon and chicken marsala from their skyscrapers while they laugh at the unwashed masses dining on cockroaches and grasshoppers. It's not that the act of eating bugs is unhealthy, it just symbolically represents a form of degradation and dehumanization on those participating in the act --a way for the global elite to further distance themselves from their "inferiors."

Apparently crickets taste like nuts or popcorn. I'd eat them, but in most countries in the western hemisphere, they're more expensive than meat.

This is a really great video! My community, the Pakistani community, eats wayyyy too much meat. I'm glad you put this out, its informative and doesn't hide the reality of the situation (ie, showing a cow slaughtered). About 50% of my foods volume is vegi. ~ American Dude

I dont know if that necessarily true. Most of the meat we have is an additive in salaans. Other than BBQ stuff like tikka or kebabs, meat is rarely the center of attention as it would be in the case of steaks and roasts. Most of our food is stuff like daal and rice.

According to my knowledge insects and fish belong to the Animal Kingdom... or is it specific to the English language that mammals are referred to as ANIMALS?

This sounds like another scam by the food police. I bought a package of Big Crickets on Amazon a coupla days ago. .52 oz or 15 grams for something like $20. I could also get a pound of them for $45. Decided to get the small package to see if I liked them. I've eaten them, about six at a time, and find them tasteless, but I like the crunch. I have no plans to get any more. I've read that there is as much protein in a pound of crickets ($45) as in a pound of beef ($15) for filet mignon. I believe I'll stay with the steak.

The reason they cost so much is because, for now, they are not made by many producers and so are an uncommon food (less farms means less to go around, and also meaning there's less likely to be a bug farm near you so you have to take into account transportation). Plus, the current bug farms haven't been broken into yet and optimized for efficiency because of a lack of investors. The idea is that if the industry of insect protein were to become even HALF as large as regular animal farms they would be much more efficiency. Insects are easy to breed in huge numbers, take less feeding, and less energy consumption in order to maintain. I'm not saying bug protein would solve ALL of the problems with meat farming and agriculture, but it SHOULD be considered.

It'll be a while before insects become as commercially viable and as wide-spread as other common meats (outside of the communities that already eat them). But pound for pound, black soldier fly larvae only needs 3/10ths of the resources (including space, water, & feed-which btw, since they're insects, they can eat any kind of organic matter, including kitchen scraps to palm fibres) that is used to farm the same amount of beef. As far as I know, the entire process of rearing black soldier fly larvae is 0 waste (in theory) and very efficient. It'll certainly be a lot more economical & eco-friendly once money goes into it tbh.

Science has proven that plants suffer, too. What should we eat now? Should we eliminate all of the predatory beings of this planet - even carnivorous and omnivorous animals? Are we saving nature by doing that? If we save nature, we save the exact dynamic that keeps everything alive, which is that all living creature consume other living creatures, be they animals or plants. I wish it were not so. I would rather a different dynamic.

I do not think there is any way that the developed world is going to acquire a taste in insects any time soon - although they do not have to be eaten solid. If so they can be seasoned with salt or spices, they can be liquidized and put in your drink, served with a splash of juice, tonic, fruit drink or some liquor or mixer? There are experiments you can do to get your protein. You may have to cook some first though

The west turning to smaller animals for meat, such as sheep, is unlikely, cattle growers do not like it when neighboring farms do so due to bacteria sheep spread. Land snails used in escargot are easy to farm, take up a small space, but they are not fast reproducers such as the edible crickets. Going by taste, having never eaten a grasshopper nor cricket, I have to still assume land snails are much, much, better. Chickens are always a good answer, "urban chickens," allowing each household 5 hens inside city limits... If they freeze unused eggs, one realizes that chickens produce enough for meals year round. Freezing eggs in ice containers in the freezer, one egg per slot, then putting the frozen eggs in a freezer bag together, makes it easy to make scrambled eggs with during winter months. The issue is few know how to preserve eggs keeping them from going bad.

Plus, it's more ethical, because insects are much less sentient than animals. It's more morally acceptable to kill a cricket than a cow.
