As a 6'5 man I use the fintess reality 1000 bench. It support 800lbs which is more than enough for the beginner to intermediate lifter. My current rack is Cap Half Rack. I lifted havy loads without my rack tilting over, and performed ring calisthenics. Full or half, if it not bolted down, use common sense and make sure you have enough weight on the rack to keep it in place. My weights are standard, which is good enough for the beginner to intermediate lifter. Most standard olympic length size barbells will support 300 to 350lbs, plus cast iron is very durable and has been around for a hot minute, so you should be able to find plenty of deals online to build your gym. Also since using standard, I do use threaded adjustable dumbbells. I have three sets that allow me to shift quickly through the weights, and I just add tennis balls on the portion of threaded that would be touching my thighs, so they don't dig in. I have as basic cable pulley system, that allows me do arrange of lat pulldowns, cable rows, and cable bicep/tricep curls/extensions. I use resistance bands for flys, warmups, and stretches. I'm personally using eyebolts and carabingers, that way the bands are always at the same height and blue painters tape on my mats for markers. Going forward, I probably most likely will get an all in one smith cage, and I have already seen my fair share that support standard weight not just olympic.

Too right and love this comment! To be honest you can get a great workout without any weights and your set up sounds great! Love the old tennis ball on the ends trick too! Obviously weight is just weight so a standard bar is no issue at all. Getting the cast iron plates are important though other wise you wouldn’t be able to put as much weight on using those plastic ones. Personally I find there’s so many more options etc with Olympic bars and plates- eventually most people upgrade to them if they take it seriously, which is why I’d recommend this type of gym for people on a tight budget, then there’s less stuff you’d need to replace. The bottom line is just to find something that works for you and get into a routine. Appreciate your comment hope that helps people see another potential set up!

After building my garage gym I would recommend a Yoke with Gymanastic rings attached and maybe a plyo box for cardio. Also the bands are great too but I would throw in a slant board or squat wedges for more activated quads

What other stats do you generally record other than arm size? And do you keep historical data? I wish I could look back and see some of my body stats from my early 20s

I only got the space to make an home gym 13 months ago spent the previous 8 years with a folding bench ez bar because of space 50 kgs of plates plate loaded d bells and k bells at 9 x2 16 x2 28 kgs and got great results yes I have better results now with squat / bench stand and adjustable bench especially my legs but my point is you can either have limited gear or all the gear what makes for progress mostly is consistently and determination equipment is only good if you use it.

100% agree… the equipment you have really doesn’t matter you can get far better results with consistency than state of the art thousands of pounds spent on a gym that collects dust

I wouldn’t recommend powerblock adjustable dumbbells especially if you have thick hands they are pretty uncomfortable to use but I ain’t complaining too much because I got them for free as a birthday gift.

Good to know thanks, I've heard it from a few people. They are pretty robust though right? Are you in the UK?

Yeah the myrack is great but you’d use up your $500 budget quick without any weights or bar- it’s why if $500 is your budget I wouldn’t recommend a rack to be honest. Have you got the Myrack?
