A nice kit, goes together well. I've made so many of these. My one tip would be to use the later Airfix multi diagram instructions.

Glad it helped! These are great kits to practice on, and you can go to town with extra details if you want.

Thank you for sharing your build. Made one of these a couple of months ago. Never even crossed my mind to make the body as a separate piece, though as you say keeping it square is all important!

Glad I could help. I thought it would be easier from the painting point of view, especially as I was spraying them.

Great video, very interesting to see how to have a nice model with a minimum of hassle. The only thing I will have to add is NEM pocket for couplings. On my layout(s), I am using, for OO and HO, the Roco Universal coupler, and I need NEM pockets to fit them on my wagons. I think you can glue the Parkside NEM pockets on this model, there might be some vertical adjustment to do. Anyway, that's one thing I will test with my kit.
@MessingaboutwithModels3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have fitted the Parkside mounts in the past, and they require the socket on the underside of the floor for the airfix/dapol coupling to be removed to get the right height.

I've made the same kit but the couplings seem to be a bit high compared to my other wagons

I get that problem with a lot of Tension Lock couplings.

@@MessingaboutwithModels any tips for fitting couplings at the right height?
@MessingaboutwithModels3 жыл бұрын
I've used the Parkside NEM mounts before, which makes it easy to choose a different tension lock, eg the cranked Bachman coupling. Especially when updating Triang stock

Thanks for this vid. You didn't mention that with Airfix wagons it is best to initially just glue the solebars to the centre pair of bulkheads , thus allowing the ends to flex when inserting the wheels. Then apply glue to the outer bulkheads when the wheels are in. Also they run a lot better if you drill out the axleboxes and insert brass bearing cups. The Airfix plastic is not designed to be durable with metal pin-point axles, and it isn't!!!!!.
@MessingaboutwithModels2 жыл бұрын
I've built some of the older airfix kits, and you're right about the plastic, certainly the stuff they used in the 70s (earlier ones used a different harder plastic). The Dapol kits have been variable with the quality of their plastic, and its not too bad at the moment. I agree it would be better with bearings and wheels with pinpoint axles, but this was a build as supplied, rather than adding any mods.

One of the cheapest kits on the market - and with metal wheels and couplings its a bargain!
