You guys should do a full budget/ brack down video (like a big drift hq parts ad) where you buy a Z3 showing what the average sale price is n than a parts list of what you’ll need from drift hq ( prices as well) to build a seat time car like this. So say someone looking at getting into drifting could be like ok I can build one of these cars for under 5k under 10k blar blar blar u get what I mean. So a person could go out get a z3, than save up said dollars head to drift hq get the a budget z3 package n be out shredding within the week or so. Just a idea boys

Word of warning: since you are going to be racing/drifting this. The car was designed for the M44 engine. When they started putting the M52 in them they didn't beef anything up. They are notorious for tearing the diff mounts out. It's just a sheet metal channel that runs across the trunk bed. I've had mine for years and love the car. Gonna drive it till it dies or I do but they got their issues.

I think that’s what’s been stopping me from getting a Z3 as a track/autocross car. The Z3 is my favorite car but it just seems like there’s a lot of potential failure points. On my phone, I have a list of things that commonly break and their fixes and the list is looooong. I feel like I’d be constantly worrying about something failing on the car 🤷‍♂️

If there are no spacers on the rear springs, you may need to shorten the rear strut bodies. I have bc coilovers and mine are lowered about an inch from stock. I had to adjust them to give it max travel but not bottom out. Post some updates, I know some things are going to wear out on his car like the diff subframe mount to the body. The channel that runs across the bottom of the trunk floor is only tack welded. It's why I opted for track poly bushings on the rear, but mine is a daily.

You reeeeeeeally need something like the randy Forbes kit in the rear to remedy the subframe chassis mount issue. I’ve built like 6 of these things and 4 of them were showing signs of failure from previous owners. Add a two mount diff cover while you’re at it.

5:18 Talking about PMC do you guys reccomend their lightweight flywheels for drifting and in general what is your opinion on running a lightweight flywheel for a drift car? Some people say it's not a good idea because since the flywheel stores inertia you'll lose that inertia when drifting, your rpm will fall more easily in drift, especially on a low powered car like a 2.8 or 3.0 BMW and clutch kicks won't work that good. What is your opinion on this?

Hey, you're correct! It really depends on personal preference.Also depends on the setup.

@@DriftHQ Well my thinking is that since the car is very low HP, only a 328 it will need all the help it can get by freeing some horsepower lost in the drivetrain. The setup is: - E46 328i - cnc71 angle kit, hydro handbrake - gutted interior - 3.64 diff - d2 street coilovers with shock and spring seperate - sports exhaust headers Car is used mainly on smaller kart tracks and for street drifting - basically a grassroots car. Do you reccomend the lightweight flywheel in my case?

i have a 04 525i (a e60 but it has the m54 that's in the e46 & z3) w/ a 6spd manual that I'm contemplating drifting since its only 200 more lbs than the e46 sedans, and I've seen them drift with the same drivetrain. its highmilage (250k miles) so if it it blows im going to just swap the 3.0L since it would only need a tune since all the wiring is compatible

It had a power loss issue that we discovered later on! Something with ABS / ECU

Better reinforce that rear subframe otherwise you’ll really be drifting into a wall 😂
