Wow! That is an impressive result. Good job! The reduced height looks much better. I bet one could also come up with a way to reproduce or reuse the Dual sticker on the new cover.

We used Marvel Mystery Oil on are router bearings. I worked as a cabinet maker in the mid-90s for a large manufacturing company, called "Midwest woodworking in fixture Corporation Southern Illinois division II. " We built & shipped stores all over the world. Some of the stores were famous bar, Lord & Taylor, the dressbarn, The Body Shop & a lot more ! The item I always built was called a cash n wrap. It's a big jewelry display case / cash register piece of furniture that is around 12' ft long. It has several drawers behind it for the workers and a printer storage location under it. I worked there for 5 years before they shut down and moved away. I really enjoyed doing that kind of work! Everyone in our Woodshop who used a router, always used Marvel Mystery Oil on the little router bearing to keep it from burning up. They used it for the 25+ years before I worked there & while I was there.

I've always felt the solution to the Marvel Mystery was licorice. At least that's what it smells like to me. Man I hate licorice. I know some folks like it but I just can't stand it. So I'm not a fan of Marvel oil due to the smell.

I learned the hard way to lubricate those bearings or they would seize up and mar the acrylic.

I use Marvel Mystery Oil in my old high mileage car. It’s the only thing that stops the spark plug pinging. I don’t know why it never occurred to me to use it for other things. Personally, I like the smell. I also like the smell of 3 in 1 Oil which reminds me of childhood when my granny used it for “sewing machine oil.”

John, nice t/t. I also had a Dual. Mine was a model CS721. A direct drive with a Shure V15 type III cart. Best ever!

Nicer than expected. The tone arm pivots are all ball bearing and an 8 pole synchronous motor.

Cool beans. I've not been a fan of plastic & I myself would probably have gone SteamPunk style using laminated thin wood like when building a guitar's sound board & sides and some nice brass for accents. Of course it'd sure not look factory anymore....

I've worked with plexiglass when I was much, much, much younger (teens, early 20s). You pointed out every single mistake I made! In my defense, back then there was no YT (or internet), and I never had anyone teach me anything about building anything. No shop class, nothing. I used my dad's tools, and the only things he had that you used were the table saw and files. My things still turned out fairly nice, the joints were the bad parts. I managed to get rid of many of the rough edges when I glued it up. (only 1 small bubble out of a few projects!). I would never flame polish either. In our department in the medical school, there was a machine shop where we had a full-time machinest to build things out of different materials for various experiments. There was a LOT of plexiglass used. That guy always tried to flame polish things because he was lazy. It always ruined it. Finally, the department chairman or someone called him out on it, because everyone was tired of receiving ugly parts, so he had to start machining edges. Good job! Your turntable looks wonderfully!

Hey John. If the problem with the vinyl record is dirt and grime, then I've seen a trick where you smear wood glue onto the surface and peal the glue layer of when it has dyed.
@JohnAudioTech
@JohnAudioTech Ай бұрын
I saw a video of that. Some of my records (I inherited) are just worn out. Probably groove damage from being played with a worn stylus.

Excellent new lid. I'd like to know what solvent is in the liquid cement - I used xylene which was fairly successful, but not as good as yours. My acyrlic lid doesn't stay open either.

Great job! I've been wanting to do this for ages for my Garrard 301 but never had the confidence until now. It would have been good to see you doing the routing - how fast to move the bit, one pass or two etc. Also I believe that many types of acrylic will melt as you try to cut / drill / saw them, so I'd be interested to know what to specify.

I run about 1" per sec. Two main types of acrylic are cast and extruded. Both machine the same with the tools I used.

My comment about this (that got deleted) was about John not being super upfront on this topic. He is a professional acrylic fabricator but the title and the commentary makes this seem as if it’s DIY. It’s not. In the interest of your subscribers, I would have rather you explained your experience…

A professional fabricator is the perfect person to teach the diy’er.
@JohnAudioTech
@JohnAudioTech Ай бұрын
I have experience but that is not the point. None of the tools are exotic. People who DIY or woodwork probably have it all anyway. I shared some of my "tricks". You have to bring the DIY spirit. If I had a fabricator replicate that cover in acrylic, that's a $300 job given the extra detail with those cut outs. Some would refuse it. I guess if the YT A.I. detects certain negativity it deletes messages. I haven't deleted any message in a couple months.
