Build an ENPHASE Solar System and all the Parts you will NEED. How to build a solar system using ENPHASE & IRONRIDGE Components on a METAL ROOF. I want to share my experience with building this 10KW SOLAR system. I will be using Enphase Micro Inverters IQ7PLUS and Ironridge racking system. In this video I will try to cover all the components needed to install a solar system on a metal roof using S-5 Solarfoot and UniRac Solobox.

Justin I applaud you for sharing this information!!! You are 100% correct! I’m in CA and in 2018 I installed a 10,800 SolarEdge system and despite I purchased my solar kit from a company that provided everything as a kit after factoring in the tax credits, my end cost for a 10,800 w system was around $16,000. Justin, I have just finished building a 6 kW ground mount system using all Enphase components. I went with the IQ8M. The reason for the ground mount is I don't do roofs anymore after a mishap that required a new knee. I completely agree about the outrageous quotes that I received for my small system. I might have paid just a little more than you did because I went through a company that ordered all the equipment that I needed and then came and set up the Envoy for me. I am currently waiting on the power company to come and test the system prior to it being put in service. Very good video.

Thank you for putting this up. I've got a ton of time into this process. I'm an architect and I know how to draw site plans and diagrams, but I'm just not getting good information or understanding of exactly how all the components go together. I love to see an example of a really good Line diagram

Glad it was helpful! Once you do it, you will be surprised how simple the line diagram is to complete. Or use a program like LyraSolar that will take your design and components then automatically draw up the plans for you. I used LyraSolar.com to build my solar permit. Hope that helps. I took the 6 hour Enphase free online course so I could "commission" my system. I bought a used iQ8+ and used an old solar panel, just to see if It'd work. IT DOES! Now I just have to get the 220 off my grass! Simply put, 220 VAC to the ac side of the inverter, solar panel to the DC side, AC side run to the Enphase iQ Combiner 4/4C, a bit of smart phone app setup and I'm making power! Though I do have 220 running all over my grass, from the inverter under the solar panel to the house... should do something about that... tomorrow...

Awesome stuff! If you are grid tied, be sure to have a net meter. If not, you will get charged for what you produce because the other meter reads it as consumption rather than production. Congrats on building your own system! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻

I just needed to see if I spend $10K on used panels, inverters, if it'll work. Answer is yes! Or... do you know where I can get descent 365? watt panels (30) and a bunch of iQ8+?

@@JustinsProject BTW, I did do those Chinese plug in grid tie inverters, and YES you can produce too much power and have to PAY the electric company to take your free power! Plus, they really hate those things, even though they quit producing power without a grid, its nothing official that they can control, other than disconnecting you! That they can do per the certified letter they sent me! May have to try the micro grid with battery backup!

Good research, this takes forever! Sol-Ark was going to have some, but they looked like a team up with Hoy Miles. Aptos also sells rebranded ones that look very familiar as well. The ones I'm most interested in are the Generac CP-720, they are designed and made in USA, backed by a very large company, and have crazy specs. Like NEMA 6 enclosures and other torture testing that exceeds many other brands. Also a note is warranty. The best part of Microinverters is they last the life of the panel, around 25 years. Some manufacturers have less warranty if done DIY or not registered by a certified installer. That's what kept me from looking at the AP system DS3 units.

Hey Justin you’re right that a lot of people in Solar don’t let customers know about the meter charge and it’s wrong that they do that. Some things that are pretty important to know for things besides installing is net metering laws. County or city permits. Power company regulations. Interconnection agreements. I’ve met guys like you that end up stuck with their equipment because like you said no company will even touch it. It’s insane that you couldn’t even get a quote for a 10kw roof mount that was around 30k. We do that all the time and offer the best financing on the market for it. I hope your project went well and I’m sorry you had such a terrible experience with other solar companies.

Very good video. I just had a 9.87kw solar system with Enphase microinverters Iq 8-H. Yes, very expensive. However, the installation company never informed me about monitoring the system. As such I had to buy a separate Enphase combiner box -4 and installed it myself after taking courses via online Enphase University. Wish I had seen this video earlier and saved myself some of my hard-earned money.

Awesome and highly informative as usual for folks just starting down the solar journey. We have a 4-year-old home with 30-year architectural shingles and our biggest fear is ROOF LEAKS. In fact, it's almost an obsession. We are 70+ and this is our retirement home. So the thought of drilling a hundred HOLES in our new roof stresses us out. What does an installer use to prevent roof leaks when they start installing all those brackets on my roof? How do they find the roof RAFTERs? Thanks in advance.

Yes, all anchors are required to hit the rafters. They use a high quality silicone on the anchor and around the base of it to prevent leaks. There are many different products on the market they claim lifetime warranties, but I never trust that. One day, they are here. The next day, they are not. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻

Where I’m at it’s $3.5 a watt roof mount or $4.3 ground mount. Since PGE is so expensive it will still pay for itself in 7 years. I’d build it myself but CA changed the net metering laws and I don’t have time to get it done in time myself.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but you can save yourself a bit of time and money if you don’t a fused disconnect outside when you are using a back fed breaker on the main bus bar. The breaker inside is protection enough. You really only need a fused disconnect if you’re doing a line side tap on the home (which you should really only do now if you’re adding a generator plug so you can install an interlock kit.

Excellent video, I see you bought 370W Solar Panels, which is oversize since the IQ7+ have a peak of 295VA (300 in my experience) but at the end is the best solution. I did a similar installation with IQ7+ using 375W panels, if you calculate that in 20~25years they will degrade a 20% (in the worst case), so a 375w panel will become a 300W solar panel in 2 decades.

I’m a year out from putting my system on a new build, so just beginning to educate myself. But isn’t the rating of the panel under perfect conditions that never happen, so wouldn’t the IQ7+ match up with a real-world max output of a 370W panel anyway?

​@@geekstradamus1548 my calculation is around 90% of the panel output, so a 370W is around 330w under a clear sky but the IQ7+ output is 295/300VA peak. In my experience for my system, I get a 3hrs (11am to 2pm) of 300w max production completely flat (capped), but I'm sure the panel output is more than that. I saw some test that many panels can produce the max and sometimes a little more under ideal conditions, which is clear sky around noon (not too hot/cold).

Short answer is no. It was required to be connected to and close to the main service panel. In installing solar there are many codes to familiarize yourself with, electrical, building and even fire. I would be concerned about voltage drop from the array to the enphase combiner, which you said was 166 feet. Step up the wire size from #12 to a #8, at least a #10 to avoid voltage drop. Too much voltage drop will affect your production especially on sunny days.

The actual wire length once cut in and connected should be around 100-115max. I'm playing it safe cutting the 500ft roll into 3 equal parts of 166. Do you think that will help since it's not actually going to be a 166ft run but closer to 100ft. My building is roughly 60ft from the combiner. We were able to find he solar foot for our steel roof! Our problem was linking the system to the internet.

You may need to install the internet on the outside of the metal building or use a hardwire connection. The signal will not pass through a metal building. I have had my own challenges with getting a stable signal inside mine.

I ran 12ga and if I had it to do over, I will do 10ga wire. Not that I have experienced any issues with the 12ga, solely due to expanding the system. Future proofing it. 8ga would even be better, however, that is a lot more expensive. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Justin, I just watched your great video, I'm in the middle of installing a smaller 4kw system to start with, unfortunately some of my roof gets partial shading during some of the day so my original idea of using a Fronius string inverter will not be optimal, that said I was thinking of switching to Enphase IQ8Plus inverters and increase the number of panels to as many as 26. My panels (which I got for a deep discount are Canadian solar 320 watt.) Regarding IQ8Plus inverters I can get a number of them which have been previously used - will that be an issue commissioning? How do you figure how many 20 amp circuits you will need for a given number of panels - is there a chart somewhere? In your installation do you have all the outputs of the panels going to that single 45 amp breaker? Could you alternatively use smaller separate circuits? Did you manage to get your local power company do install a grid-tie meter? Thanks in advance Jan

for the grounding, did you wire a bare#6 from the racking to the roof junction box to the grounding rod and #6 THHN ground from the roof junction box to the combiner box?

No, I was required to run from the racking to the combiner box. Then, from there, it was to be connected from the combiner to the main service panel. I think the concern was ground looping. Thanks so much! This was super helpful. Just curious, in my system I had to calculate Voltage rise from the panels to the system controller, because of the length of my runs I had to go with larger wire to the combiner. Did you run across this?

I would go with #10awg wires if I had to do it over. Although I have had zero issues with #12 I think #10 would have been worth the little extra cost.

I had pretty much the same thing installed but for some reason there’s a 20ams breaker in the pv panel that controls 12 panels that keeps tripping after a few hours of work especially when there’s more production like at noontime,there’s any chance that that 20 amps breaker is under size ?

Are you running IQ7's or IQ7+'s? If not, are you paired with IQ7A's? If so, then you have too many on one branch. You can put max 16 IQ7's, 13 IQ7+'s, and only 11 IQ7A's. Same for the IQ8M's & IQ8A's (11). If you had it installed by a company your system should be under warranty. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍

Can you please explain why 12awg is too small for a 10.89 amp load? Even considering the NEC 125% rule on solar back feed breakers we are looking at a max of 13.6 amps out of 1 branch. Although, the Enphase microinverter will never surge pass the 1.21amps on a IQ7+ microinverter. Then once we figure in vdrop/vrise and I am still in the sweet spot. Yes, 10awg would be better if I planned on expanding in the future but it's incorrect to say 12awg is too small for my install. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Kind of a dumb question may be, but it seems like the micro inverters output 200 to 240 V. How do you get 110 V single phase from the Micro inverters?

Each side is 120v. The black wire is 120v, and the red wire is 120v also. Ultimately, the output of the microinverters is 240v.

A dedicated AC disconnect switch must be present within 6 ft of the meter in most jurisdictions. It can vary slightly in some areas. That means a single disconnect. The combiner box has 4 switches total. It's similar to what we see with a heat pump. Dedicated breaker with an AC disconnect switch within 6 ft of the outside unit. Hope that helps. I bought the reassemble IQ cable drops. They had two lengths when I purchased mine. I chose the longer versions because of the layout of my system. If I had it to do over, I think the shorter versions would have worked for me. I did have to make the ends for connecting to the Jbox. Hope that is helpful.

Our system was quoted for a Grid System at $22,000 to $25,000 without batteries on a Ground Mount that is really a Roofed open wall on 3"x1/4" ridged pipe building. Not sure how much it will be at the end. You might find installers like framers & cement & stucco workers that work for a company like they do here in Florida. walk up when they are working, and see if they speak English, then ask one of them if they do side jobs. Or advertise for people that do that in your area.

@@m4vr1ck the output is 2x120v (split phase, total 240V) which you can feed your main panel (is required, otherwise the Enphase won't produce any kwh) then charge your EV. You can't charge directly to your EV since the microinverters need to receive electricity/voltage from the grid, unless you have battery backup (and use it as off-grid system).

Hi Frank, That depends on you wind zone and the rail system you are using. Are you using IronRidge racking system? If so what model? 10, 100 or 1000 rails?
