Hey dude love the build I'm hoping to build a similar engine for my bug im over in the UK 🇬🇧 i would love to chatt to you and hopefully learn a few things I'm currently unsure about

always knew a fuel-injected turbo VW engine had this kind of potential. It is fun seeing people coming to terms with this, especially when they think something else is better.

Keep those videos coming. I'm hanging to see new videos and what you have been working on. Great to see Aussie engine builders getting big numbers!

Thanks Dom. I’ve wanted to do more daily driving in this car so I have retuned the engine on pump 98 fuel. I’ve managed to make a knock sensor work on the engine to confirm the tune is safe and it made 325hp. Ill try and do a video about this soon

@@chevplane Look forward to it. I'll touch base with you later next year about a project I'm working on.

Probably silly question but Rod Penrose, related? IV been buying parts from his store for years now very helpful bloke

Rod is a relation, but an engine of this caliber comes from Wayne Penrose, the VW performance specialist 👍

Another question regarding your build... What heads are used on your engine? I ordered heads from Jake Raby years ago for my 2.6 with the intent to turbo. It had 48 x40 vavles, 914 plug location, semi spherical chamber design with oval ports. I parted that engine out and sold the heads. In the future I'd like to use square port heads that would be 6th studded. Are your heads 5 or 6 studded? The stud pattern isn't "square" in a type 4 as it is in a type 1, so sealing such big bores especially under boost is quite a challenge. My current engine will only have a 96mm bore and oval port head (1911cc) because I'm doing my own R & D. But the intent is to go back to a 2.6 or 2.8 litre displacement with a horizontal mounted fan. Is your turbo water cooled as well? If so, is via the same coolant used by the charge cooler? That's a dilema I have with my own build right now. I love your car. Thank you.

I am still running the original Kombi heads (oval port). Extensive porting and 48x38 valves. I am not using a 5th or 6 stud. I am using raceware studs and they work great for my power levels. My turbo is water cooled, but I am not running any water through it. My exhaust headers are quite long so I expect the EGT into the turbo will be a fair bit lower compared to a conventional setup. Personally I would not use the charge cooler water, I think passing hot water through the intercooler would not work so well. With so much hardware packaged in a small space, IAT's want to rise so you will need as much advantage as you can get to keen them reasonable.

Does your 911 style fan shroud have any added vanes to direct airflow evenly to each cylinder? Do you have any probes or do you rely on temp at the spark plug to determine head temps? I want to add 4 let's as well to my turbo type 4 exhaust primaries in addition to the a wide band after the turbo. I love your car. Taking notes.

There are no vanes inside the fan housing. The temperature sensor is at the factory spot by the inlet port for EFI tuning. While it does not give the absolute head temperature, it gives a relative temperature, so I still have tuning strategies and protections in place. They just activate at much lower temperatures to account for the position of the sensor. There have been no signs or adverse effects of uneven cylinder temps over the last 12 years using this system. I am honestly more concerned about even cylinder tuning, as a lean cylinder at 400hp will do instant and far more damage then slightly uneven air distribution inside the fan shroud. This is why I installed 4 extra widebands. By ensuring all cylinders were tuned evenly, I was able to push this engine closer to the limit and extract an extra 50hp since this video.
