SuperMax 16-32 Drum Sander: amzn.to/2BYQpnQ
Also T-shirts, Stickers & Mugs are available on my Etsy: www.etsy.com/s...
In this video I took a little inspiration from Frank Howarth and build a table that attaches to my drum sander (aka Thickness Sander) that converts it to a tabletop sander. This way I can run boxes or other material over the top of the drum on a flat table. Enjoy!
Standard Disclaimer: Putting your soft, squishy fingers near powerful sharp spinning things is dangerous. I've been doing this for a while and I know what I'm doing but even I'm not invincible. I take a lot of safety precautions based on my level of experience and not all of them are shown on camera. Don't do anything you aren't comfortable with. If it makes you nervous you're probably doing it wrong. Don't do anything stupid. Reapply sunscreen often and floss before bed. Is anyone actually still reading this?

Apologies for the necro post, but this is pretty cool. It's a much more economical way to add the equivalent of a Flatmaster to the shop. The one advantage the Flatmaster has is it's drum design. It creates no static and because of the hook and loop the sandpaper pulls away from the drum a bit in operation creating a cushion of cooling air under the paper. It also gives a nice feel for the pressure you're exerting on the workpiece. I already have both in my shop, so no savings for me, but I am wondering now how the standard drum sander would feel and compare. I might have to spend the weekend in the shop. :)

Laguna Supermax should integrate this into their next wave of upgraded machines. European companies have been doing similar things with Jointer/Planer combos for years. I'm surprised I haven't seen any companies making dual-purpose drum/surface sanders like what you just fabricated. Great vid and quite a solid innovation brother!

Hey Blake Big fan of your very chilled and inspiring woodwork videos. Bought a house myself 2 years ago with a wonderful 30 square meters single car garage which i wish to turn into a woodshop /hobbyroom. For future videos, would it be possible for you to go over some of the machinery that you have ? Perhaps you could elaborate a little on the pros and cons regarding their individual features. All the very best Jesper, Denmark

Very cool, dude. However, I almost wonder if this has the same premise as a jointer where the far side should be flush with the apex of the drum and the leading edge sets the amount to take off the work piece with the sander. Did you check any of the sanded edges with a straight edge. Either way, I commend the ingenious-ness of this.
@weberwoodshop

Chris Pereira no it’s not quite the same because I’m sanding off about 5 thousandths of an inch at a time or less.

Nice build mate! Do you have to keep noticeably more weight on the back of the piece due to the fact the indeed and outfeed tables are the same height? I mean as compared to the way a jointers tables work. Cheers.
@weberwoodshop
@weberwoodshop 5 жыл бұрын
Baldheadedchimp no it doesn’t work the same way a jointer does because it removes such a small amount of material. It just skims the surface. Usually takes off less than a thousandth or two. No need for a different height on the outfeed.
