5:30 feed the tubing through the washer and nut BEFORE putting it over the pot, then pull through and you can hold the pot in place with the tubing while you screw on the washer/nut.

Thanks for the shout out brother. And don’t worry. Everybody botches my name. And TVJones for $185 is a GREAT FIND. Just so everyone knows I paid over $300 for my set. Great video great kit. I’ve always wanted a Falcon. Might just take this one on.

Matt Terrell Thank you! I changed out the pickups and electronics on my Gretsch and couldn’t imagine having to do it any other way. Again, if you use multiple tubes you can do everything in one shot. Just put the tips of the pots in and... BOOM! Done!

Man you are impressive. I’m sixty years old so even though I’ve been playing for many years, I don’t have the God given talent that you have. Sadly, I don’t have the skills nor the time left to learn to build such a nice guitar. So I will just keep plucking away at my old Woods acoustic with a smile on my face. Love your work, and enjoy watching.

@GunsandGuitars

+Caleb N. Haha beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Let me correct myself. My guitars, while beautiful to me and some others, are not an immaculate pristine scratch free glassy smooth blindingly shiny finish. They have tool marks and scratches and other marks I’m just too lazy to sand out. Call it a relic if you want. I just call it imperfect. Like me.

I just used this kit for a build for someone who normally plays a 1958 Gretsch Country Gentleman. This is was a pretty tall order! I found that this kit is absolutely nothing like a real Gretsch 6120. The body depth is 3.37", whereas a Gretsch is 2.75". That makes a huge difference when buying a case. You have to buy a dreadnought case. The spacing of the pickups are more Gibson/humbucker, so Filtertrons won't fit properly and even with the Filtertron to Humbucker rings from TV Jones (or eBay) there are small gaps. Another consideration regarding the humbucker spacing is that you need to buy a Gibson/Epiphone LP or 335 pickguard. Gretsch won't fit properly. The Trem on this works as good as a real Bigsby, although I recommend buying a smaller spring. Actually, stringing up this trem is much easier than a Bigsby. BIG thing to note - the string spacing on the nut is 33mm. Keep that in mind when buying a new nut. Seems most nuts you might try to buy are Epiphone or Gibson, which are around 35.5mm. That puts the strings way out toward the edges of the fretboard. I originally bought a Zero Glide for it but the string spacing was too far apart. I ended up making/shaping a nut from scratch for the zero fret. I ended up building pickup cavities to reduce feedback. Not sure I would do that again. I also put in a tone switch instead of using the tone knob. Again, not sure I would do that again. Overall, and in hindsight, the kit was good quality. The first one I received had a bad neck, but The Fretwire had a new kit to me in 2 days. Awesome customer service. I found the new kit/neck to be pretty good, with not many frets needing to be filed. The neck fit was excellent. The only real issue was major cracking around the body bends, which required lots of filling and sanding. The pickups in the kit weren't actually all that bad. I ended up using them on an ES 335 build. I would consider them for a stock build on this kit in the future. For this build, I ended up using CTS 500K pots for the individual volumes, a Bourns low-friction for the master volume (I relocated it to the pickguard), and Switchcraft for both switches.

I got a $30 pawn shop single humbucker guitar and made it playable with some fret work and a setup. Upgrading the pots, tuners, and pickup are all that's left so I'm saving up loose change. If you want to donate any rejected components they'd surely be a step up. BTW I thought you'd torched then oiled this beauty but the stain makes more sense. Peace.

to anyone watching. drag some abrasive cord through your saddle slots to eliminate sticking points, and use big bends nut sauce to lubricate all points of contact. you cant also bypass that bigsby rolling bar, instead of going under it go OVER it. it usually doesnt make much of a difference (depending on the model) these are some tips for staying in tune without making any modifications.

Dan is the most down to earth and seems like if you met would be easy to become friends with. Totally agree with his choice of tone cap options I do wish and it's not just him. But Hollow or semi hollow bodies have the acoustic presence I wish video makers would also review. Any guitar even solid bodies that sound good unplugged? should sound good sparked up. If they don't? It's the choice of electrical hardwear and can be swapped out till it sounds as good sparked up as unplugged. My 64 Kent Strat.I will put her against any Fender Strat MIJ MIM and even US. Someone installed 500k pots with a cap of the same size as yours on this. The Pups in it are crazy. They are not double stack hidden Hbuckers. But are half again taller than normal single coils. Brother Peggy Sue Yeah I like it. Her tone is SRVs #1 No effects and Reverb set at 2 or 3 depending on the amp. But that Sky is Crying tone. I hear players chase That Strats tone spending hundreds in Amp pup and pedal changes.. Slap some suspension bridge cables on for strings . Lord SRV must of had Tiger Claw Kung Fu fingers. The thing that makes Peggy Sue really special? On the back a young man used the guitar as a writing surface March of 1969 He wrote his love a good bye letter on it as he was deploying to Vietnam. It's not complete but the wood is forever dented with this young man's words. Peggy Sue has the blues in her wood. When I'm sad She cry's with me. She screams when I'm angry. And coveys feelings better than any word could ever do.

Hey Dan, another cool modification if you have a Bigsby style tremolo and find changing the strings to be to be a bit challenging is to just remove the pegs and drill holes in their place. Then, just thread the strings through. SO much quicker and so much easier.

Technically you're correct but you're looking at it from the wrong side. In this specific case he's checking for string clearance to the frets looking in direction of the nut - in which case he's actually fretting the 2nd since everything in bridge direction is irrelevant. I had the same thought for half a second and then realized what he meant. peace dmt

Amen !! Excellent tone, playability and versatility !! Great job!! I don't really like reliced guitars, but I would buy yours. It is beautiful in many ways. All my guitars are reliced, ( especially the one I snapped off the headstock and fixed) along with my cars and house and clothes as well as myself. I try to avoid relicing, but it's difficult. The Bible says, Lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break- through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust don't corrupt and where thieves cannot breakthrough nor steal.

I string all my non-locking guitars the way you do it and while it does improve tuning stability, I would actually say that nothing beats my Planet Waves auto-trims. Stability really is unmatched with these, and you don't even have to cut the excess string off yourself. If you have the cash, it's totally worth it. Btw, in the video your tuning pegs seems to be regular metal ones, but in the closeup, they look wooden. Looks gorgeous! Where did you get those pegs?

Hey Dan-o! Wouldn't be best if you made a rear access panel so you don't have such a hard time feeding the stuff through?

Nice video and great job on the guiitar!I'm curious, have you tried building one with a floating bridge. I have always hypothesized that the great Gretsch sound is partly due to a floating bridge. Amazing differences of pickups.

+Rick Chavez this one had pre drilled holes for the bridge stanchions (or whatever they are called) so I couldn’t really do a floating bridge. I’d be interested in hearing the difference though.

Love the channel! I have a tele body that I’ve put one, very thin coat of white paint on. You talked about applying the pickled oak stain on the pick guard and it gave it a vintage cream tint. Would you recommend me doing the same thing to my tele to give it more of that same look?

I saw this vid last month. They were out of stock but notified me when they came in. Just ordered this kit. I always wanted a Gretch, but the price never justified it. This is the perfect solution. Going to get TV Jones pickups and a roller bridge. Probably nut too. Looking forward to building it. Thanks for doing the 2 vids on it.

Billy, I just got this kit the other day after it was on back order. It had a number of quality issues like damaged binding and gaps between the frame and the veneer. The worst issue was the "engineered rosewood" that is used for the fretboard was already flaking. I taped it up to work on the frets and when I removed the tape each piece pulled quite a few splinters of wood out of the fretbord making it useless. I am sending mine back but I don't know if I should order another if they are having quality issues with the fret board material

Jeff b. Thanks for the warning. Mine was delivered this morning and I will look it over carefully when I get home. I will post an update on the condition asap.

Billy, I would suggest doing a masking tape test on the fret board before you put too much time in on it. If you get any splinters pulling away you're going to big issues down the road. Best of luck. Let me know how things go.

I unboxed my kit and everything looks good. No damage or flaws. I'm going to get some painters tape for the frets and test the fretboard before I proceed (hopefully today}. I will let you know how that part goes.

Thanks, I would be very interested in what you find. I like the guitar but don't want to order a replacement if other people are having issues with "engineered rosewood".

This is a really nice looking guitar now. I would like to know how you did the patterns on the headstock and body. While I would not chose the TV Jones pickups it really did need to replace those old ones. Knowing about that roller bridge could help make a lot of lower end guitars a whole lot better.
