Nice roller coaster, maybe instead of have a bunch of duct tape and wood to slow it down at the end you could just lengthen and the track and have the new parts be at a higher angle.

For sure. One thing we underestimate it was the power of the hill itself And it would’ve been difficult to build the end any higher than we did. That was stretching it anyway with the resources we had. Good thought though!

2 inch. The key was making sure the size of the pipe was slightly larger than the wood.

How did you attach the wheels to the cart?

It's been many years, but if my memory serves me right. I used 6 inch bolts. I had enough wheels to put three wheels on top of the track on both sides and to keep it from shifting side to side. I built the cart out enough that I could put wheels sideways attached to the side of the track. Unfortunately, if I could do it all over again, I would make a steel/welded cart, because the wood cart fell apart after one season. Wood is not tough enough to last long.

I am building one for my backyard and I have two questions how long was the pvc pipe for each track and how did you get the pvc pipes to bend for the down hill parts

PVC pipes are 8 feet long and 2-inch in diameter. We use the coupling to connect the pipes together from the inside of the PVC pipe. We bent it simply forced it into the bend, just not too much. That would cause slightly sharp angles at the coupling point, but we tried not to force too big of a bend at the coupling point. Your posts in the ground will end up being every 8 feet at the coupling with one addition post at each midsection of the PVC pipe. Does that make sense? Did I answer your question? Good luck :-)

Why do you have 6 wheelsets instead of 4 tho? This won't work properly on hills because now there will always be 2 sets of wheels that float above the track, which you definitely do not want. I really recommend staying with just 4 wheelsets of 3 wheels (add upstops) for safety's sake.

Great point! I think my thought of the time was, to keep it as safe as possible. Keep in mind, I’m not a builder of such thing, so I was learning how to do it as we were building it! 😊

​@@GreatnessWithin Yeah, best tip I can give you is try to look up how other (backyard) rollercoasters work and try to mimic that (in a way smaller scale). I'm studying engineering so if you need some other tips I would gladly send them :D

@@Silacide Haha! This roller coster was built over 11 years ago - before there were many "roller coster videos" available. At the time, we learned from what was available and I don't think I will be building any more any time soon 😁 I wish you great success with your engineering studies. I sure your future is bright!

For the record, the cart - built with wood - didn't last very long. Haha! Need to have someone with welding ability build a cart with steel.

Hey there! I didn't track it at the time, but if my recollection is accurate, it was roughly $2000. If I were to do anything different, it would be build a cart out of metal not wood. The cart didn't last very long.

How do you deal with the insurance?

That's good question. I assume the answer would depend on where you live and your home insurance policy. We never specifically listed on our insurance. Instead, we build it in a way that was safe. Fortunately, NO ONE ever got hurt. Good luck!😊
