I'd wager the reason they don't offer a prebuilt at all is the RFI/EMI testing requirement for electronics sold in the US, which does _not_ apply to kit components. Last time I checked it costs a _minimum_ of about $150,000 to get a consumer-electronic product certified for sale in the US.

I've still got and cherish my Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance SP. The Advance SP is actually still shockingly usable (not great ergonomics but very small and light plus has a backlit screen). It was also the ultimate "hide under the sheets" device thanks to both the button to toggle the screen light on/off and the tiny size it folded into. I got caught reading books under the cover a couple of times growing up, but never got caught with the GBA SP. The small size, light weight, decent capacity battery, backlit colour screen and backwards compatibility with GB and GBC cartridges made it the ultimate Gameboy and still one of the all time best gaming handhelds.

Things to know about funnyplaying mods: the buttons are fine but will not match the original - particularly triggers and dpads. The dpad for my gba is two separate pieces and shaped very differently instead of one piece. The feedback is not as good at all so corners are difficult. I recommend using the original dpad. You cannot safely use the funnyplaying usb c battery mod while charging even though they advertise it as play and charge compatible because of the way the battery is mounted. TFT > IPS if you want the screen to resemble how games actually looked. They're going to look soft and blurry on an IPS screen. The shells need more color variety at least for what I've seen on GBA. Many of them are clear and there aren't enough solid options. You need a shell that's specifically molded for their laminated displays so you can't just buy any shell unless you want to gouge out the plastic to make it the right shape. If you get an everdrive for the gba, it won't natively play gb/gbc games because the cartridge shape determines the mode the gba boots up in. There are emulators but they aren't perfect in every game. Check for game boy player or full color modes in the settings, ie in Mario vs donkey kong on gba, if you're using a backlight as the colors were adjusted to match the lack of backlight in the standard setting. My final fact is you should play megaman battle network 😉 from the game boy library... Play dk 94.

11:40 i actually bought a GBC instead of GBA SP for quite a bit of reasons. The backlight is absent meaning that my eyes dont get blinded; replaceable batteries so that i could choose my own (which have more cycles than li-ion and LiPo); it has way, WAY better battery life and also it still has a DC barrel port, which could still be considered universal, which powers the gameboy itself rather than charge the battery that powers it, which slows down battery degredation.

Here comes the "FPGA is not emulation" shill. No, FPGA console clone is emulation, or at least it's not "just like original", since 1. it's software (or gateware if you want to be precise) defined, much like the software emulators, 2. it's (most of the time) not even RTL-level clone of the original hardware and 3. it usually comes with a ton of added things and swapped components, that none of those are present on the original and they are not necessarily accurate either. Not to mention the actual silicon used to implement the chip is wildly different. Not to mention that you don't need FPGA to achieve cycle accuracy. Get over it.

If you divide the amount of systems each console supports by the price the analogue pocket is way better value for money and it’s not even close. And I own both systems because the funny playing is still cool.

It has a lovely screen. I think it would be great to give as a present to a kid interested in tech.

the fpgbc is great but one thing about is the fact the clock speed is off. If you run a game on the fpgbc and a regular gbc or analogue pocket at the same time, you'll notice the sound is faster on the fpgbc

When I was a kid the people with THE CABLE were the "cool ones" and everyone wanted to be friends with them. In some Pokemon games the only way to get some special Pokemon was to share them with an object assigned to them, which will trigger the evolution. Damn... I feel old writing this.

I have the analogue pocket, very similar to this but no assembly. FPGAs are so cool.

The only thing I would change about these OLED FPGA GBC's is, I would give them a simple little audio DSP chip, like a RP2040 DSP for EQ and filters etc, a decent 24-Bit DAC with upsampling to upscale the original audio resolution, and a decent 32ohm headphone AMP, which thanks to the upscaled audio resolution would sound amazing with a good pair of headphones, and you could enjoy immaculate chip-tune audio quality, it would be a great way to listen to chip-tune music albums released on cartridges, doubling up as a HQ Chip-Tune player.

I have an OG GBA SP so I'm good. Clamshell and a backlight just needs USB C and a headphone jack and it'd be perfect.

i could imagine why some might be a tri wing if they are really really small. had an rc car diff that used the 2nd smallest hex from the i-fixit kit and upon tightening 1 of them it turned in to a perfect circle when it reached the bottom....not a huge issue for assemly but disassembly happended with a dremel >.< and afterward required a new housing for....dremel related reasons.

The Gameboy Color was 80 usd when it came out so 84 usd for a better gbc isn't bad, even if you have to put it together yourself. 14 year old me would have loved that lol

They probably save a bunch of money simplifying the process by only having one option. If not enough people get the preassembled hardware, then the labor for assembling a few units would greatly increase the cost and the niche market would become more messy. If they have framework/iFixit level of instructions, it doesn't even matter IMO
