Hey Jeremy, just FYI - If its 100 KPA to 10 Millibar, your 150 Miilibar would be 1500 KPA - Which makes a bit more sense when you refer to the 3000KPA is the wilting zone. Great episode though. Really informative. Thanks.

Even without using blumats there is a lot to be learned from this video. Especially for beginners. The high EC from too much dry back is usually something only experience will teach you. I've been through this and learned the hard way that it wasn't just lack of moisture but the plant burning itself up from "proper" nutrients. Yet, indeed the moisture level did cause that. I learned that to control stress in that manner I had to be low on nutrients at that time. Sorry,I'm rambling. I'm out. Great episode Jeremy.

I run blumats consistently and a couple things I learned - 1) when bleeding the air from lines, I had better results bleeding from the actual carrots themselves rather than a purge valve. 2) when doing the hanging drip calibration, the directions for mine said when you get the drip hanging, half an arrow past where the hanging drop is, would make it so you wouldn’t have a runaway carrot, I found that 1 full arrow turn worked better if you plan on topping the reservoir to full. Always enjoy the content

I really went crazy with FIMing just to see what would happen. I had 8 top branches I LSTed to be bushy for a Scrog, I FIMed all 8 tops, did about a 30 degree cut to leave a little of the top. Each one turned into a 4 to 8 separate top sites, I was VERY pleased with the results. I highly recommend experimenting with it if you have the Veg time.

Thank you to both Jeremy and the BAS team for the watering specific content, as it is likely the greatest area of opportunity for novice and experienced living soil growers alike - much appreciated. On a side note, perhaps some oil (perhaps from someone’s hand) made it onto your lens and it’s in need of cleaning - the colors and image are slightly blurry, and overall has appeared muted for the past 5+ episodes or so.

As a beginner, I always had some problems with watering and fertilizer. Since using Living Soil and the Blumat tensiometer I have had very good results and the plants love it. I can only recommend the Blumat Tensiometer to anyone who has problems with the right moisture, it is very accurate and works really well. In my experience, the sweetspot is around 90 Mbar. In practice, I usually keep the moisture between 60-120 Mbar, works perfect for me. Your presentation at the end was very interesting and makes sense to me, next time I will try and stick around 50-80 mbar. I'm really curious how it works in connection with the Blumat watering system and what will your sweetspot of Mbar.

@@megaflux7144 I’ve found that regardless wet or dry it’s good to watch your runoff. If you water without runoff you have no clue what ppm of your soil or medium is. Testing runoff absolutely will shock you. You might be trying to run around 800ppm feedings but you water with clean water no nutrients and test runoff at 2500ppm. This tends to happen if you don’t do watering to 20% runoff with every feeding. Even with runoff you still get buildup. I love blumats for trips you can’t be there to water for a week. Blumats can’t really water to 20% runoff. That’s a runaway blumat which I have experienced. They work but they’re for special circumstances if you feed through a res with nutrientsand you need to leave. I personally hand water and test runoff weekly. If ppm is high just flush with clean water till runoff is at desired ppm. Blumats will build ppm in the soil. Keep an eye on them. I’d like to set it and forget it but this is a major issue regardless of method. Always check. The 20% runoff is a DTW system. Hand water or pump water through plants till they over fill and let go of any water they can’t hold. The water put in should be 80% retention 20% waste. Drain that waste away. It’s not a cheap way but it’s effective

Late in my grow I pulled the blumats out of storage and paired it to both the ecowit sensors, and the blumats moisture meter. I find the ecowit reads between 40-45 when I have the blumat sensor at about 80mrb. I am just sharing my observation. Thanks again team B.A.S.. You guys rock!

I saw that in the previous video you used the new technique for dialing in the tops w/o the carrot. I was under the impression that needed to be done on something like 15psi (like from their flow reducers). If its possible to calibrate with that method on gravity, that would be sweet. I think for someone like you who is very experienced with watering by hand, it might be better to get the pot to the moisture you know you like, and then calibrate w/ the carrot in the soil, that way your hanging drip is based on what is already in the soil. Gravity systems are more complex imo but they also have less risk (as you can see already!)

I like to dryback to 180mbar before watering. How much it will drop depends on how much you water, a deep watering, around 5%, will drop it to 30, but less, like 2%, will only wet the top, which will force moisture to be wicked deeper, but will stay in the 80-120. I’ve dried back to 250-300 and plants weren’t wilting, no burn also, but I never feed heavy. In most cases I am using saponins and aim for closer to that 10%.

I was using a 55 gal res with the blusoak tape and a pump setup, but I think because my res was handfilled and not consistently filled to the top I constantly had runaways in the beds. Which is weird because I had a pressure regulator hooked up along with a gauge to see the pressure going into the lines and never saw a real change. Sustainable Village or I never figured it out so I pulled them and went back to handwatering. When they worked they were the best, but when they didn't they were just too much of an issue. Runaways, blusoak having pinholes in it every other cycle, Moisture sensors going out, etc.. unfortunate but flooding is unacceptable for me.

Interestingly, Sustainable Village leans more towards 80-120mb for living soil and this video your saying lower. However like you mention they do well in the earth boxes but there is a huge air gap. I'm def interested in watching this one play out. I have been keeping my plants around 65mb and then water again if possible around 120mb. My plants are happy now that I have the meter to record that data. I believe I was in the past definitely guilty of overwatering. 5 gallon pots are hard to keep up with, vs now much larger pots. I can go 2 days mid flower watering down to 65 and then again at 120. Just works for me.

@@oztraliangrown8208 I think that's what we are going to find that it's going to depend on the type of soil used, peat, coco etc. I'm guessing different soil properties may hold onto water and nutrients at different moisture levels. As well as different strains I may prefer it more dry than others. I'm watering less now, than I was in the past. Even in the past I was happy with my harvest. Hoping that using these meters I can make it better quality and quantity. How do you think I can maintain the moisture all the way to the bottom? Other question is how you feel about using blumats with worms in the container/bed? Do you think they could create air pockets by the carrots? (I know you haven't used them in awhile, but just wondering what your thoughts are.) And thanks for all the living soil knowledge!!

Awesome information as always, but what's going on with the 3X3 bed you moved to the "auto flower" tent? I get wanting to geek-out on the Blumats, but I'm unlikely to every use a system like that, actually much less likely than I am to grow a few autoflowers between runs.

That's awesome thanks for the info, does anyone know if this is the type of stuff that gets taught while pursuing a soil sciences degree? If not which degree pathway has this type of curriculum? Thank you.

I’m thinking of setting up some kind of auto watering system from basic toilet parts and float for my giant earthbox I made and if all goes good I’ll do the same for the next even bigger ebox I’ll make.

It would be so much easier to not hand water, timing it sucks especially early on

I don’t mind it but when you have as many plants fruits and veggies other medicinal plants mushrooms like I do the more I can make stuff do work for me efficiently I’m down plus raising 6 kids 6-18 it’s busy ontop of being a traveling welder it’s a handful lol that’s why I do big pots or beds or in ground less watering but this sun has made it rough to keep them hydrated

@@Mrjboomseedco wish my old lady would be more on board with me traveling for work. Got a buddy that's doing a ton of stainless reworks for ethanol plants. Love the shop but that road money is unreal

Those float valves can work extremely well. Especially when you have a lot going. Just check them from time to time.

Yes it is I did a lot of stainless back in the day and processed pipe but I was gone more back in those days though I was single and as much as I trust friends to watch my grows I still don’t trust anyone fully but myself lol I’d say start with a 3x3 tent and work your magic on your old lady lol all u need is one ebox and one nice plant to get the ball rolling

Have you ever tried a HST method called mainlining with your Living Soil?

What about if the reservoir is super full or almost empty? does that change anything in the pressure? Also, sustainable village's new approach with the carrots off adjustment, seems intriguing. Have you tried it?

If you calibrate your caps with the resivour half full it really helps as far as pressure differences from full to near empty

Would worm castings and perlite alone make a good soil? I had an old buddy back in the 90's that would grow in straight castings, and he seemed to do quite well.

Did you mix up the number 3 and 4? When taking clones you called the front right number 3. But when you were super cropping, you called the front right number 4.

Blumats, like many things, require some knowledge and experience. once that knowledge and experience is gained then this system is great. letting the plants dictate when and how much water they need can only be a good thing in my view.

When you reinitialise the blumat tensiometer, you have to hold the power button a couple of seconds, until it displays “oooo”. Do that everytime you resoak and have the electronic top cap disconnected from the carrot.
