Nice one, Bill. There's a couple of other ways to do it as well, depending on whether you want a radial wheel, or a crossed-and-radial. On some rims with some drillings, it's worth noting that occasionally it's necessary to "ease" the drillings in the rim to allow a different spoke approach angle at the rim, if the rim has been drilled or specified to be laced in a specific fashion.

Bill, I have this same situation. 32h rear hub, 16h rim. I'd like to lace it the same as in your video. I understand that the drive side spoke length is 1x, but how do you calculate the length for the paired spokes on the non drive side? Are they 2x length? 3x length? Something else?

Nice work 🙌 I built front wheels, for my tadpole trike, from 32H hubs and 48H BMX rims. The hubs are 15mm through axle. Good strong wheels 🙂

I have the opposite problem, a 16h hub (Shimano C24 DuraAce front), and in the absence of after market alloy rims that are available in 16h drilling, am contemplating lacing to a 32h rim (with something like expanding glue, to fill the vacant rim hole to avoid water / dirt ingress). I assume nothing to solve here, other than to understand if there's any reason that's not structurally safe?

Thank you! I have a 32 H rim and hub, but the rim is Strong enough and I'm very slim, so I think there won't be any problem, because my front Wheel also has only 16 spokes with no problem.

Your 32H rim and hub is laced with 16 spokes total radially? If yes, no problems perfect symmetry etc.?

@@DTao888 It's been working fine for years, I laced both wheels with 16 spokes, the rear wheel has one crossing on the drivetrain side and radial on the other side. After the first ride, some aluminium nipples broke at the rear wheel, I changed them to brass and never had issues since then.

Hello, I tried to do it, but didn't succed. How do I determine the length of spokes, please? Because on spoke calculator gives the correct length if you have the holes matches for the hub and rim, not 16 on 32.

Intuitively it would seem that there would be much more pulling force in each of the spoke holes with 16 spokes vs. 32 spokes. Is that intuition correct or no? If it is, is there a risk of the flange breaking with half the spokes?

Never seen this happen, but the forces are double and the wheel will be less strong. Had a good functioning 14 spoke wheel but wouldn't trust it for every day use.

Did 14 spokes in 28 hole hub and rim. Used paired spokes radial. Results rode well and softened front as desired. Always carried spares in seatpost but eventually chickened out because I'm a heavy rider. Actually removing spokes made no difference in perfectly true wheel!

@@ralphgoldberg5543 Absolutely! Just decide how brave you are before trying this. Removing spokes from a built 36 or 32 hole wheel is really easy. I didn't even have to true the wheel afterwards! 16 and 18 spoke wheels were available readily before disk brakes became common. My wheel was radially spoked. If you try this with a crossed spoked pattern I doubt it would work. A crazier pattern would be to use spokes pulling on one flange and leading on the other. I would not try this. Probably this would twist the hub apart. I wouldn't do any of this on a rear wheel or one with disk brakes due to windup at the hub! While you're doing this get aero spokes and tires that match the rim profile. This assuming you're looking for aero gains.

Thank you. I have this dt swiss syncros rp2 rim for months now. The hubs gave and i couldnt find 18 hole hubs for rear. I think the radial pattern only works when you have the exact length of spoke needed.

@@ralphgoldberg5543 Radial spokes are not smart on a back wheel due to windup on pedal stroke. Manufacturers are smart enough not to make a dangerous product like that. Probably dangerous with 40 spoke radial back wheel.
