@goldsgarage8236 one thing I've never seen mentioned on engine build videos us tool cleanliness. A lot if us are doing teardown with the same tools we do assembly and I'm sure many don't realize how much grit can get introduced
@RonaldLewis-py6yt2 күн бұрын
@roberthollinshead2325 You're correct we have a tear down table and all the tools stay at this station ,then after all plugs,cam bearing are removed the block with mains separated it gets the first hot tank then a pressure wash and if not clean enough just repeated then off for boring and torque plate honing and then decked lastly hot tank again then soap with brushed cylinders and pressure washed ,next to assemble table for cam bearings a lot of hand washing in between, our engine is clean and ready to go together!

Finishing off the night in the shop watching your video. Thanks for always emphasizing the important small details. It really helps refresh our memories when we don't do this as often as you do. Nice timing for this build. I just picked up my 4 bolt 69 block from the machine shop yesterday afternoon. It is .060 now with a 3.75 stroke so it's a 388 cu in deal. We used KB 13 cc dish hyper pistons, GM 5.7 forged rods with ARP bolts, eagle cast crank and internally balanced it all. Pistons are just a hair below the deck. Haven't measured yet but .004 to .005 or so I believe. I'm going to use a 64 or 65 cc head for a static compression ratio of about 10.2 to 1 with an .039 head gasket. Going head, cam and small parts shopping this week. Goal is a minimum of 450 HP and 450 torque, 91 octane pump gas and 12 inches of vacuum at least. Elevation here is about 3500 ft. Quick fuel 750 vacuum secondary carb will be used for now with a possible efi upgrade later. Cam and head suggestions based on your experience are welcome. Going into my 73 Z28 that currently has the original Turbo 400 with a 2200 stall and 373 gears. Biggest issue I can see for making that power is the 350 in it currently has a performer intake on it for hood clearance considerations. I do not know if an air gap intake will fit under there though so I might be out of luck with those goals. Merry Christmas Alan and company enjoy the holiday's!

Thanks Captian, sounds like the kind of engine I like to build. If you are going FT cam, I think 230@.050" and .480"-.500" lift should work with your compression and car combination. As for your intake, you can always use a shorter filter or a drop base to get clearance. We did dyno tests with as little as 1" filters and it made very little difference. Hope this helps and merry Christmas to you as well. AG

@@goldsgarage8236Thanks for the suggestion Alan that is about where I am too regarding the cam. I'm leaning towards going $$ with a roller cam and AFR 195 Eliminator heads. That would get me there I'm sure. As for the hood clearance it does have an open element 3 inch air cleaner with a bit of a drop base now. I did the aluminum foil crinkle test on it yesterday and there is exactly 1 inch of hood clearance so with a slightly shorter filter you are correct I will make it work. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Look forward to the next one. Cheers

We are waiting on a cam, lifters, push rods, timming chain and a few others for the 010 block 350 we are working on.

I brought out a stack of old soft cover books from the old days last night, right after watching the GG video which I re-read the first chapter of the Bill Jenkins book. Thanks to Al Gold for stirring that up for me! Tonite I will be in my shop playing with a '66 327/275 that I expect to pull 375hp out of with the only aftermarket big parts being the camshaft & intake manifold.. It will be going into my 39 Packard sedan!
@goldsgarage82367 күн бұрын
Hey Alleyoop, thanks for commenting. You reminded me of something too. In 1966 I had a 62 Chev bubbletop with a 283 automatic. I bought a 327/275 complete drive train including a 4 speed transmission from a wrecked 66 Chevelle and installed it. It had 100 miles on it. Later i installed an L79 cam and aluminum intake manifold. Quite similar to what you are doing. a 327 will always be my sentimental favorite. AG

Hi Al ------ you mention throughout your videos that ---- High Pressure oil pumps are not needed ---- For me it's a D.I.Y. at home --- so just a hone ---- will mic up clearances on mains and rods just to see what they are at ---- miles on this engine are unknown --- got it just about all apart --- plugs were clean --- tops of pistons are not all carboned up as well as the heads --- since this will be just a hone and bearings and rings ---- going with what it is at --- would a High Volume pump be good to install instead of an OEM one --- It's a '79 Pontiac 301 that was put into a '56 Pontiac ------ Thank You for the videos you put out ---- Alot of INFO to be had ------ Hope you have a Merry Christmas ----- Rodney

Thanks for the question Rodney. If your clearances are within spec. i would not see a reason to change the pump. Merry Christmas to you. AG

I used standard oil pump on 2 SBC a 350 and a 305 both FT cams and they have 50-60 psi at idle on cold start with 10w30 oil 25psi when oil gets up to temp, 60psi at 1500rpms hope this helps

Great video! You should check out lake speed jr. he recently did a video that explains why no rebuild with new pistons should use anything thicker than 1mm rings.
