In this video I share my way to build a Bass Tagelharpa.
I hope you find it interesting to watch.
My new little tune in the end of this video I have given the name " The Autumn Bass".
Thanks for watching / greetings Magnus

Thanks for this helpful video. I always wanted a bass talharpa but never had $1000 to spend on one but i do have woodworking skills and this is a super easy build.

I loved watching your video. After searching for a long time to get this instrument online without success, I thought about making it myself. Watching your video makes me realize that it's quite a craft, and that it's much more complicated than I could have imagined. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! it's really inspiring

Thank you, I'm really glad to hear that you liked it! Maybe it's me making it a bit complicated.🙂 There are other videos, as you probably know, that are based on other ways that might be better and easier to follow. I hope you get one, and play the tagelharpa soon 👍

Any recommendations for tailpiece connecting material? Did you use a hemp rope? I have a cello gut rod made of some plastic synthetic something. It just doesn't look nice. I have plenty horse hair, Can I use that to make a 'gut rod'? I botched the tuning pegs 3x and the holes. I bought 8.7cm long tuning pegs that JUST barely fit. It's going to have to be good enough. I'll do better on the next build. Thanks for the help 👍
@magnushogman9964
@magnushogman9964 Ай бұрын
Hello! I use hemp rope 6mm for the tailpiece, it works well. You can certainly use horse hair in the same thickness too 👍 I wish you the best of luck with the build!

Sounds and looks so good! There's a song Dzivia - Uźniasieńnie, musician from Belarus. At 5:30 there's an amazing jouhikko (I guess it's a jouhikko). I'd really like to hear what it sounds like on your tagelharpa. Maybe you could try to play it and post in Shorts please? Thanks!

Thank you ! I'm glad to hear that you liked my tagelharpa, and thanks for the music tip! I test played the song by Dzivia from 5.30. It was a really nice piece and it works very well on my tagelharpa. Maybe I can share it, I'll think about it 👍

Hej Magnus, bygger du bass tagelharpor fortfarande som du kan tänka dig att sälja?
@magnushogman9964
@magnushogman9964 4 ай бұрын
Hej! I dagsläget bygger jag inte då jag saknar rätt virke. Får jag tag i torrt och bra granvirke så blir det säkert mer bas tagelharpor. Då kan det bli att jag kan sälja några framöver 👍

@27:12 can you please tell me the name of that too you use to make the tuning pegs? The one that's like a pencil sharpener. That's amazing!!! 😱 I've been sanding down my tuning pegs for almost 3 days. I will give all my money to have that kind of tool.

Hello ! That is great, then it will be much easier to make the pegs👍 I myself use the same tool that is used to make tuning screws for a cello. The cutter for the tuning screw and the broach for the tuning screw hole.

@@magnushogman9964 I did find both a violin and a cello peg shaver; I went with the cello. The violin one would be too small. I also got a reamer that can do the same size hole for the shaver. Today i shaped the body. I have the face almost ready for glueing. I can see the end of the tunnel. I just wish it wasn't almost 40C here, I could get more work done 🔥🔥

Well I got the shaver but I don't have anything to attach the wood to the drill for mechanical spin....doing it by hand....OUCH 🫤

How many hairs did you use per string size?
@magnushogman9964
@magnushogman9964 5 ай бұрын
Hello I don't count the hairs. Goes on the thickness in twisted mode. Take a little thicker first and remove hair until the string sounds good. The thickness usually ends with 1.8mm 2.2mm 2.5mm

Var det hästhår? Hur många hårstrån använde du för varje sträng?
@magnushogman9964
@magnushogman9964 6 ай бұрын

Quick question for you, friend. At 19:00 what is the bar you glued to the center of the interior of the soundboard? Does it provide some sort of stability for the deep bass notes?
@Arcko
@Arcko 7 ай бұрын
Annnd I just finished watching this video this morning. Great build here and such a deep resonant sound! Two more questions for you. 38:54, what are you treating the insides of the tuning pegs with? How many horse hairs are you using per strand and did you braid them or just leave them as a bundle? Thank you ahead of time! I am finishing my second Kravik Lyre and am about to start on my first tagelharpa.

Hello my friend It's a beam that will pick up the vibrations from the thin top string and send the sound across the entire lid. The sound stick on the other side spreads the bass sound and unites vibrations from the lid to the bottom. It looks backwards but the vibrations go diagonally through the bridge down to the lid...
@magnushogman9964

Hello again. It is a screw paste that lubricates and makes the resistance even and nice, the chalk makes it easier to get the screw in place. I make the strings in the thickness of 1.8mm, 2.0mm and 2.5mm. They sound good there, I think. I twist them to the right hardness, hold them like that and tighten the screw. It's great to hear that you built the Kravik lyre and that you're going to start building Tagelharpa👍 It makes me happy, I wish you the best of luck!

Hi thanks for sharing your process! I would love to build my own tagelharpa too and your video is so helpful! ✨ I also love hearing you play 😊 Could you tell me what is the difference that makes a tagelharpa a bass or an alto?
@magnushogman9964
@magnushogman9964 7 ай бұрын
Hello ! I'm glad to hear you find it interesting! Thanks 👍 The difference is the length of the strings. You can tune longer strings down to a lower tonal range and short strings to a higher tonal range... A bass tagelharpa sounds more if it is a little larger in the body too.
