People, you need to understand rock is NOT a manufactured product. You work with what you have. Someone commented and they are right. We don't know homeowner's budget. He got the job done and the wall is NOT going anywhere! He followed basic principles that have proved to be successful. Could it look better? Maybe. But, it's subjective and h/o sure seemed happy. I thought overall the job looked fantastic! Btw, I've been a Landscaper Contractor for 35 years. I've done quite a bit of this type of work. I KNOW how difficult it is to try and fit rocks together (he doesn't have 100 tons at his disposal to find the "perfect" rock right there at the jobsite). And, you don't have unlimited time either. You make due. It's a lot harder than you think. There you have it.

Water is the enemy of retaining walls. I do a crush stone base with tile behind it to move water away. Then backfill with crushed stone and more tile if the wall is tall. Its is far cheaper to spend on tile than go back and make embarrassing repairs. Your pad looks great with all that compacting. That short wall will probably be okay IMO but think about drainage for bigger taller walls.

Tk TK I don't claim to be an expert in boulder walls but my understanding is you do not put fabric vertically against the back of a retaining wall because it causes it to hold water which puts too much pressure on the wall and can cause failure.

I don't know the building code there, however, I think the homeowner may have violated it. An above ground pool doesn't need a fence because of the height of its sides and having a lockable ladder. By raising that back wall near it, the pool's side is not longer deemed safe for keeping kids out. Therefore, they may have to install a fence by the pool along that wall.
@bluecollardadventures23383 жыл бұрын
probably going to build a deck off the raised area to go around the pool, at least that is what I would do

I, for one, like the wall. I happen to like large boulders. My house was built among giant granite boulders, several of which are bigger than my house. I love the look! But I understand that opinions differ. That's OK. I just don't understand why some people are rude about it. Ultimately, for Andrew, it's up to his customer. If they like it, he was successful. He seems to have plenty of work.

@johnmazza94325 жыл бұрын
That's not near as big as I thought. It looks like you're lifting 5-6' boulders and you must be lifting them pretty high to load them in your truck. Or are you using a different machine for that ? A 5-6' boulder must weigh 5-6 k lbs.

A good contractor is one who knows when to walk away. And owes it to homeowner to get a pro. I build some walls just finished 2700 redi rock blocks 22 feet tall 800 feet long. I don't do stone cause I'm not good enough and I'm a lot better then yours. I've teamed up with a guy who is an artist at it. I refer homeowners who want rock to hime. Are there no codes where you live. I don't mean to pick on you, but don't try to do everything stay with what your best. Homeowner deserved better. To all that will complain about my comment. Comments about the wall looking terrible came from those who perhaps didn't take into consideration that he is working around a regular Grand Central Station of dudes in and out of his work area. Perhaps his attention was on them, like maybe trying not to kill one of them, and if so just maybe that had something to do with the final looks of that wall. I don't think I ever saw any job where people got in the way of the person running heavy equipment quite as much as they did in this video. Dudes, let the man finish before you start smoothing out the topsoil.

I've seen time and time again where stone this size will eventually start to significantly settle from it's shear weight and nothing but soil under them that becomes saturated after heavy rains thus will look worse than it does now not to mention they didn't even bother putting a drainage system behind the wall so it's just a matter of time and weather to start seeing the dirt wash out through the moderate gaps in those broken-up chunks of stone. So did the contractor tell the home owner to do it this way, or did the home owner tell the contractor here's how much money I got and so do whatever you can for this amount of money, and so the contractor had to cut A LOT of corners?

The boulders are supposed to lay deep and flat into the bank. The earth will topple and shift the rock until you have blow outs; the way it was placed in your video. If you wanted the large face appearance then you would need much larger rocks. This is the common cheap a dirty method used by those who haven't been trained or who don't care. Make the change and your customers will thank you.
@oby-16076 жыл бұрын
Boulders placed wrong? Were there numbers on them or ?
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Camarata - sadly, not a chance that wall will last. Taller sections will inevitably blow out as chinking is bad practice (particularly in cold climates subject to freeze/thaw cycles that easily dislodge the chinking). Wall should also be battered to resist overturning and each stone needs 3 point bearing (not just stacked on top of each other). It's both an art and science to build a long-lasting, aesthetically-pleasing rock wall. Could easily take several days to place that wall correctly.
