I would have loved to do a project like this with my dad. He passed from cancer when i was 14. He was an architect too, and I often think of him when i watch things abput homes ans buildings. He would have loved the technology we have now and how easy it is to see stuff from arouns the world. When he passee the internet was still dial up and cell phones were still massive bricks that pulled trousers down! 😅 Thanks for sharing this story ❤. Yes, no building is ever free. I once had a guy from Malawi put up 80% of a stable block for me with literally almost nothing. He even reused the pallet nails and we sourced round poles from old electricity poles that had been replaced nearby. We also had some lovely paving from bricks that were getting thrown out. We got stuck when it came to the roof, however, and then shortly after that had to leave the property we were renting. But it is amazing what can be done with determination and ingenuity, and those stables were used to seperate the horses for feeding for quite some time before we had to leave. As a millenial who is stuck in the bracket of people who work three jobs just to squeeze through the month financially, I am now very much into reusing, recycling and being creative and thrifty -not just for economic reasons, but for environmental and creative reasons. So i love seeing content like this because seeing how different people tackle projects gives you knowledge and knowlege is the best resource of all ❤

Aaah! This video makes my heart sing! My first from your channel and I had to subscribe. I am a 72 year old tool woman who ditched a nursing career to restore old buildings. My favorite memories involved going to the hardware store with my dad on Saturday mornings. My mom and I would also go to the lumberyard to scrounge off-cuts for projects. I was lucky enough to marry a handy, supportive guy who went from construction to electrical work and took me along for the ride. I love your sense of humor and music choices, and I love that you are doing this with your daughter. And can I add, kudos for being vulnerable about your grief issues and getting help for them. Real men ask for help. No shame. Wish I weren’t so far away (USA); I would take you to lunch!

Is this a parable? Is this a series of delicious metaphors? How was the whole piece conceived and so magically constructed? Is it serendipity or just from many hours of quiet contemplation that the narrative matches the build and the whole reflects so much of what it is to be a human both now and in the past? (Just rhetorical questions my friend) Father to Son. Father to Daughter. Jesper this video is so touching, so heart warming. The story, your story; your family story transcend the build. The precious connections between generations and connections to the precious earth are not lost. To teach and then be brave enough to stand back and watch and then delight in other's success is a precious skill, the skill of a true parent. You have told us of the foundations, of the aspirations, of the struggle to begin, of the history. Shown us what goodness grows around us. Can't wait for part two where I guess you will show us what wonders we can achieve, what it is a home truly needs and maybe some prophecy about what lies above the roof about the future. (Therapy is a miracle process that is far more redeeming and healing than any addiction or pharmaceutical could ever be, seeking counselling is not a sign of weakness, it is a brave and transformational process.)

Sorry Jesper, as long as you keep making woodworking videos - and/or cabin building videos - I do not need the services of a therapist 😊. Your outlook, creativity and sense of humor continue to make me smile. It is very nice when you have access to so much building materials. Where I live there is not much to build with other than a trip to the lumber yard, which is still a two hour drive from my home. Even pallets are hard to come by, too, and often are not free unless they are very damaged. You are very fortunate indeed!

It's so beautiful. My grandfather worked with wood. And though my mom never worked with wood. She wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, and figure out the problem. I remember building a bunck bed, and working on cars with my grandpa. Though I was to young to really learn much. After I married a city boy though, I was happy for all they both thought me. Unlike my husband, I wasn't afraid to retile a bathroom, fix sinks, fix electoral outfits, or work on my car. While he would have waited forever, for the money to hire someone. I found out how and had it fixed in a few weeks. Because I always saw my mom, and grandpa working on things I knew it wasn't that hard. It made my life so much better. And my son also learned this by helping me, and watching. So remember that your not only spending quality time/building a house. Your teaching not only your daughter, but future generations as well. I grew up half in the country and half on the edge of city. And this kind of lessons is unfortunately not what so much of the future generations are getting. So it's a beautiful thing.

I just found your channel and I enjoyed this video so much! It hit my heart in so many ways. I lost my mom in 2018 and realized she was also my lifelong best friend. Life has been very rough since. Growing up, I was a major "tomboy" and working the farm with my dad taught me so much. I found out that I was capable of doing more than I had imagined and more than many of the city boys my age. Building this cabin with your daughter is such a special project that will always mean a lot to both of you, your relationship and the skills learned. I think many (at least in the US) have forgotten how important both parents are to both sons and daughters. Each relationship contributes something different, but equally important and very special. Loved your sense of humor too! You made me laugh so many times and laughter is always a good thing that we need more of these days! I look forward to the next segment in this process and will have to look at your previous videos. I love wood and woodworking, but am just learning when I have time.

I fondly remember the times my father and I built things together, fix things, dreamed up new projects. He taught me a lot, and I miss him, along with having more chances to learn with him. I still have some of the wood that he milled when I was really little, and it's like you said, the smell of different species bring back certain memories. Walnut = in the shop with my dad. Given enough wood, time and creativity, the rest is joy. There is a great satisfaction from creating something from nothing of relative importance. Where I live, there are many rocks. Nice big rocks of various sizes that can serve many purposes. There is something about using native stone to construct useable features of your living space. I even used some of the rocks for my shower floor. Even though they are uneven, it worked out and gives me stable footing in there. Cheers!

Nice cabin love the sentiment I have done similar projects with my children and grandchildren. Not a criticism, but I am interested how you will deal with moisture at the bottom of the front wall where water can collect on the deck and seep under the wall? usually there is a break in the floor so the cladding can go down under the floor wall joint with a small gap in the front for water to flow through the deck.
@JesperMakes
@JesperMakes 22 күн бұрын
Very good catch 👍. I found out the first time it rained, cut off the flooring outside, let the wall go under the flooring and then mount the outside flooring again with spacing to the wall and between each other. That will be a solid part of the 2. part. Thanks 🙏

Wow, great video. There's a lot of work to do before you even start building. I knew that already, but seeing it in this video made it more real. Can't wait for the reveal. Good work, both of you.🔨🔨👌👌

This reminded me of the things I did with my dad. He passed away in 2020 and I am so glad we spent time together working on a shared project - I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life.

Since you used a 45 miter mate on the rafters to extend them, id probably scab them as well. A board fastened to one side, one end sitting on the wall plate, the other screwed onto it extending a few feet past the joint should be fine. Not telling you how to build brother, but i imagine you get snow there and a lean-to roof retains a lot of weight. It cant hurt right?

Good tip, thanks! Extra support never hurts, especially with our snowy winters. Appreciate the advice, brother.

Hi Jesper, I just wanted to say thank you for another great video! Your work is always so inspiring, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the project develops with the cabin. I was wondering if you would consider making a video about the benefits of using a trailer attached to a common car instead of buying a van. I think it could be really useful for a lot of us who are trying to make more economical and versatile choices for travel and transport. Thanks again for all the amazing content you create!

Years ago I built a greenhouse with my son using old conservatory windows a neighbour had thrown out and pallet wood. Just bought 4 plastic sheets for the roof. It's kept us well fed ever since 😁👍🏼

I have found your channel while watching random building stuff. I have a tiny random, fledgling KZbin channel as well but would aspire to your style of story telling. I am a big re-use, recycling fan. Mainly for my own pleasure and “not necessarily the earth” though it clearly benefits as well. Living in England space and laws restrict us massively in what we can do. So I love builds and stories like yours. Your memories of your dad are the same as mine of my parents, often wondering or mentally sharing my builds with them despite being alone. Thank you.

Robert Heinlein said "Anything free, is generally worth what you paid for it." Not sure I agree with him, especially when Beau does it so well! Cheers from an Aussie grandma and Beau fanatic. 🙃
