Great vid! The finished shelter reminded me of a couple of things: stone shelters hermits would build on cliffs and hillsides of the British isles in the middle ages, and the dugouts/cabins described in the Little House on the Prairie book series. Not the TV show. The books. Anyway, this was an entertaining story. You had good narration, some humor, a little cave-in drama, and some incredible night lapse footage for a little poetry and wonder. Have you considered bee-hive-shaped construction? It is circular, for the floor plan. The key is to slope the walls in at a radius equal to the diameter of the floor. So you have a gauging chain that lays across the floor, that is used to adjust the length of the center-pivot chain, that actually controls the inside slope of the walls. We did this once on a cellar made with earth-bags. Very strong construction. The Celts built stone buildings, called clochán, this way. No lumber required. And if you access it through the top, it can be entirely protected from wind. Built underground, it was practically invisible, unless you fell in. It can also be done with arched doorways, chimneys on the side like you did, etc. It could also be done entirely with sod, if desired. (A good single-bottom plow would help a lot for gathering sod.) It seems that cordwood could also be used in this manner. And straw bales could also be stacked this way. I grew up stacking mortar-less stone retaining walls, and later moved on to using mortar. I'm no expert mason, though. In the book Skis Against the Atom, Lt. Col. Knut Haukelid tells about building a cabin up in the highlands of Norway during WW2. They stacked an inner, and an outer, stone wall, and put dry earth between them for insulation. One real advantage of stone- and earth-construction, is the combination of low flammability and ballistic protection. Ask anyone who has survived the horrors of war. Most of our modern houses would catch fire if hit by a few tracers, and would provide very little protection. Thankfully, we've been spared that scourge for many generations.

Don't have anything to add as to construction. Love how hard you worked to make this cabin, impressed by that. I am a little worried about the rainy season. And you did not once look at your cell phone. Your location looks like it may be near a stream. Just saying, thinking about more than one winter in your Cozy Cabin. Enjoyed the whole video. That looks like a seasonal river or stream. I'm guessing it catches the spring runoff? So, building it so low in that valley is going to cause some problems I'd think? If I'm correct, why didn't you build it on higher ground?

I like your attitude, and work ethic BUT looks like you built it on the side of a drainage and it did not get that way without water running through it...There are wet years and you may get your feet wet. Also hope the rocks in your chimney do not crack from the heat...Overall - Good on you!
