Today at Badgerworks we build the crash site diorama for our wrecked Airfix Spitfire, with water effects, a nice, grassy bank with flowers, and a river bed made of cat litter...
After catastrophic engine trouble, our intrepid pilot is forced to crash land his Spitfire, sliding it through a river, hitting a boulder and ending up in the bank. After unsuccessfully trying to fix the radio to call for help, our man hitches up his britches and sets off to the inevitable derision of his mates.
We're calling this one "A Long Walk Home".

I love a good diorama. It isn't just the illustration of an historical event in 3-dimensions, but the artistry and craftsmanship involved in making one.

Indeed. I'm getting more into diorama making - I think it really adds a lot rather than just having a model on its own.

Most lengthy video just drone on and on. Having myself been an editor in the Television industry, I typically fast-forward to just the highlights & relevant/interesting parts in most videos. You were able to achieve that directly with your concise editing that kept the video moving along very nicely & quickly from one part to the next, with just enough detail to learn from but not letting the presentation slow down. Again well done.

That's good to hear, thanks. One of the problems I found when I first got back into modelling was trying to find information on how people did things. I've watched many videos of very highly skilled builders, but they don't always show how they get the amazing results they do. That was the reason I started this channel - so I could share the information I found to others in the same boat as me. It does mean that sometimes the videos need to be a bit longer than what is normal for this kind of channel, but I don't want to miss anything out. I must confess I'm in the business too, but normally in front of the camera rather than behind it, so editing is still a bit of a learning curve for me. It's gratifying to hear from someone who knows what they're doing that I'm heading the right way :-)

I am a modeller, but primarily a Star Wars costumer, and use both the pastels and cheap cat litter as cheap weathering media, so brilliant to see both used here (linking the use of pastels for weathering in you previous video showing the build and painting/weathering of the model).... brilliant as ever sir...

@@SteamGeezerUK Exactly - highly versatile media that scale really well - models kits, model railways and also 1:1 cosplay/costumes, and much cheaper than commercial versions, but just as effective, and allow for custom mixing - fab. Keep up the feeds and videos as fantastic inspiration... :-)

Couple resin tips, our shop also has no heater so we made a resin box from some thick foam insulation and stuck a 25 watt bulb in top that keeps it a good constant temp. There's also tape called flashbreaker that's a bit pricey, but resin doesn't doesn't stick to it at all. As a potential third, if you do resin pours in this size square grid frequently it would be good to make a "box" of 4 pieces you can put together with screws to get crisp square edges. Some packing tape on the inside will make it non stick too.

Fantastic diorama , only the one gripe thow, when that Spitfires crash and hit water or ground, the prop shafts would have been bent backwards and not broken off, Mk1 props were made from Duralumin (later ones from composite wood and resin due to shortages) I know this to be so as I have an uncle that was an airframe fitter during WW2 and he said this was a common problem with novice flyers ground the Spits on landing due to the nose being so long, just a reality fact , sorry for being picky ,but there you go.

Quite fantastic - I'm not mch of an aircraft builer myself, but this gave a tom of tips on how to do things, so I might give it a try. The only think missing from the diorama is a human element - without people a scene like this doesn't connect with the viewer. I'm not saying filling the path with people, but perhaps someone with his dog having a chat with the unfortunate pilot? That would also give it a sense of time - the crash happened quite recently. Or, if you want to make it have happened some time ago - some engineers trying to figure out to get the garbage out of the water. Anything is possible, but as I said, a human element is quite necessary I think.
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 5 жыл бұрын
I did think about adding people, a pilot at least, but I couldn't find any decent 1/72 scale figures at a price and delivery schedule to add them. Plus my figure painting leaves a lot to be desired :-) It's something I plan to do with future dioramas, if it's appropriate, because you're absolutely right in saying a human element adds a lot to the finished result. Thanks for watching.

Outstanding job. You are a brave man using that contact cement. Don't get but one try with that stuff. Well done! I have my eye on a 1/48 Airfix Sea Hurricane. Haven't done an Airfix kit since I was a kid. Or a UK fighter for that matter. Looks like the quality of that 1/72 was pretty good. I wonder if that carries over to their 1/48 stuff. Oh, well. Contact glue is easy to get along with as long as you're careful. I've done laminating jobs on boards eight feet square - now that is nerve wracking :-) As for the kit itself, this is a newer one and they seem to be not too bad. I don't know about the bigger ones, but the C47 I did a while ago was Airfix and that went together reasonably well. Thanks for watching :-)

Pretty good looking result. The rock looks a little odd and the plane would have slewed to the right when impacting it. All that said - way, way better than anything I could achieve.
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 5 жыл бұрын
The rock is a little odd, I'll give you that. It was a casting I had laying around so I used it :-) As for the impact, machines do funny things when they hit stuff. One of the reference pictures I used was a Spitfire that belly landed, hit a cow which tore the port wing clean off at the root, but the rest of the plane slid straight as an arrow across the field. I think what one has to keep in mind is that the wing is only thin aluminium, and the force needed to shear it off is much less than the kinetic energy of the rest of the plane. Thanks for watching.
@salparadise1220
@salparadise1220 5 жыл бұрын
@@SteamGeezerUK There's a slight difference between a cow and a rock, in terms of density, mass and resistance to impact. Though I hear what you're saying about the weirdness of object's behaviour.

I got a big bottle of PVA and Acetone with craft knifes n small tubs cat litter n sand paper for my Iraq diarama since you said that scenic glue has the same alcohol as the acetone I'm gonna mix it with the pva and see if turn out as well and thin as that kinda glue, if used it before so be able to tell if works what can go wrong haha, great build

If i may come with a suggestion. Use a soldering iron on low heat to create some dents and deep scratches on the planes. Your diorama details are awesome, but i see an intact plane that was suppose to have crash landed, i need some holes and some dents in the aluminium shell of the Spitfire. A hot needle makes some amazing bullet holes :).

That's amazing! I've had a spitfire recently that just won't play ball. I've made ever possible mistake in the painting process. I'm half tempted to do a crashed spitfire myself. That way I can jump up and down on it!

I really enjoyed watching this diorama making, it is by far the best I've seen (granted I haven't seen many) but brilliantly done. I would make my own but I do not have the resources nor the skill to do this.

I appreciate it, but don't give up. I always say to people no-one is born knowing how to do things - we all have to learn. Have a go, I've seen amazing dioramas made entirely of paper, get some cardboard boxes and cheap paint from the Pound Shop and just have a go. Here's a diorama I made from a picture frame and a plastic cup... kzbin.info/www/bejne/h529ZKKKhc9noJo
