Thanks. With the pandemic I needed something to occupy my time and mind. So I got a few cigar boxes from a local store and started tinkering around and built one. It turned out much better than I expected, and I now have four more in the process of being built. I bought Shane's book and it has been a great help. Thanks again.

This is awesome! I've been reading 'Making Poor Man's Guitars', and that book has inspired me to build my own cigar box guitar!

Thanx again Shane, Years ago I got hoodwinked into playing a wash tub base at a New Year's gig. It sounded like legitimate music, one of my favourite times. Every time I forget someone reminds me that people make the music and it's people that make the music matter.

I've watched a lot of the build videos and no one has used a table saw to cut out the hole in the box. I set the depth of cut and then set the fence to cut the right side. Do both ends at the same setting and your neck will always be square, Then set the fence to cut the left the left side. I cut mine a little narrow. Remove the rest of the box by making many passes and then sneak up on the left side to have a perfect fit. Clean up the bottom with a file,

Hey Shane Dumb question... 1 x 2 x 3 ? I've been using 1 1/2 x 3/4 stuff. Am I using the wrong size? Not sure what the 1 x 2 x 3 refers to. Help?
@fokker313
@fokker313 5 жыл бұрын
The 3 refers to feet or 36", the 1x2 is actually 1.5x.75 of an inch, so you are using the correct size for the neck.

Not a dumb question at all. The convention is confusing if you don’t know its origin. 1x2 refers to the rough sawn dimensions, before finish planing. In the old days they would saw the boards to 1” x 2” and then finish plane the four sides to make it straight and smooth. The finished dimensions are 1 1/2” x 3/4”, but they still call it 1 x 2. (I assume that now days they saw it closer to the final dimension to reduce waste)

Can i ask a Question, can you have the bridge anywhere, or do you have to keep the 25/1/2 scale..
@edenmeden
@edenmeden 4 жыл бұрын
I think you only really need to be concerned about the bridge location if you're building a fretted instrumen, since the fret locations are dependent on the scale length. If you're building something that is fretless I don't think it matters since it's more up to the player's ability to press down in the precise spot
