Looks like a cool project if you're on a budget and/or don't have access to a proper X/Y galvanometer head. I'd suggest three things though - 1.) use two mirrors instead of one and fix the mounts for both steppers - as it is, one axis is only moving the mirror's mass, while the other axis is having to move the mass of the mirror PLUS that of the other stepper. 2.) depending on the field size, it may not affect things enough to matter, but X/Y systems like this should really have an F-theta lens to flatten the focus across the entire scanned field. And 3.) use first-surface mirrors instead of normal everyday second-surface ones. Refraction through a second-surface mirror's glass degrades the quality of the beam.

this kind of laser control has been used for quite a while, and still is in machines like the laser pecker. Lasers mainly use cartesian gantries because you need to keep the beam straight when cutting
@Neptune730 Жыл бұрын
I like the system. The quality is pretty good for a 3D printed unit that has steppers instead of Galvanometers. You could probably get a little better quality with a first surface mirror as well. I am impressed though. Good job. I may have to build one.

Congratulations, very good project. I have a questions: Is the print not affected by the variable focal length between the laser and the objective? Do you set any software fixes?
@kmyerslp852 жыл бұрын
It is affected and I am positive he choose the optimal "range" so in the middle is slightly out of focus, outside of that is in focus, and further still is back out. Testing would reveal how much that affects quality to adjust for the best results with the lens. I was thinking if he could add a way to adjust that lens when the steppers hit their extremes. If he had the center of the work area in focus, when the laser starts hitting the limits of the area a mechanism would adjust the focus out to compensate. You could even have the lens on a spring to return back to the same focal distance.

Heya, quick question. It appears you're using 28byj-48 steppers, how are you dealing with the play / backlash in the gearbox? I would expect to see what appear to be missing steps in the engraving every time the motors change direction but that doesn't look to be the case.

I dont think a few missed steps are that much of an accuracy concern. the motor is like 2048 steps per revolution after the gearing.
