So, I recently installed a huge American White Oak door, and new AWO door jamb (had to widen the house frame, cut some of the floor and carpet, smash out the old concrete door sill, and cut the plaster on 2 sides to make it fit) for a client and it took 2 full days, working by myself.. and that was after 2 days of applying the finish to the timbers.. I thought that was too long, but I feel better after watching 4 people work in this door for 2 days.. 😁 A beautiful door indeed, as is the mantle.. nice work guys 👍

Beautiful doors. I'm a pro custom door builder. I 100% completely agree with your reasoning on not needing mortise and tennon joinery anymore due to great adhesives but I'm about to improve your lives as woodworkers even more. Dowels take time to line up and get everything together. I make dowels out of epoxy. It's SO much easier because you can use a hand drill for the holes, they don't need to be perfectly in line because what you are going to do is instead of using a wooden dowel, you are simply going g to fill the holes with a0 strong 2 part epoxy and once it hardens, you have actually created the dowel, so the holes don't have to be perfectly machined as long as the openings line up pretty good. In fact, if the holes are drilled in at slight angles then the dowel becomes a little crooked, bent in the middle and now you have a joint that would be impossible to pull apart even if the epoxy itself didn't stick to anything after it cured. Anyway, 100s of doors later and after a couple of decades I've never had a joint fail and it is SO quick and easy to just hand drill the dowel holes and fill with epoxy. Maybe give this a try. Beautiful doors and great video!
@bradthomas87112 жыл бұрын
I love your Technique Dave. We are a little spoiled as we machine our dowels with our CNC. As long as they are programmed correctly , it's a piece of cake!!
@davearonow652 жыл бұрын
@Brad Thomas Yeah, I wasn't taking into consideration you were using cnc. Once you have that dialed in, I guess there would be no reason not to use it. It would be just as quick as anything I'm describing, although I still contend a hand-made slightly crooked epoxy dowel would make the joint even stronger, It is really just overkill at that point and I mostly just bring that up for the old school Nay sayers who can't get past the idea of making traditional style panel and rail doors without also using traditiinal mortise and tennon joinery. I would never poo poo mortise and tennon joinery and every woodworker worth his salt building doors and furniture etc should be able to make a great clean lined tight fitting joint, they will always have their place, but I guess I was just excited to see someone with some common sense that realizes like I do that just because something is traditional it doesn't neccesarily make it better or more appropriate. I loved your video and I'm looking forward to seeing more from you guys. Here's a link to some of the doors I've built if you are interested.
