I know literally no one who had a kitchen in their dorms, or were even allowed more than a small fridge and microwave - I have only one friend who could have a little hot plate in her dorm, but they had to register it with their RA so they knew where to check first in case of smoke, lol. Accidents can happen so fast though, and fire spreads even faster, I get it. My college had the lunch room (that was open all day though, from about 6 am to 8 or 9 pm) and a small convenience shop that was open later that had little things like premade sandwiches, ramen and snacks (and toothpaste, toilet paper, little necessities like that) in the "common area" in the lower level of our library building - across the street from the dorms (over a city block away if you lived in the farthest building).

I get the whole not having kitchen is, since the University in Malaysia doesn't have kitchen in dorms and we weren't even allowed to bring any cooking appliances either, you know like a portable stoves, mini fridges, etc. So all in all, it fits the style of norm here. What I don't like is, not having bunk beds. The University I go to have bunk beds in their dorm rooms. So if you live in a room with three people in them, one of the bed would be bunk beds and one other is a single bed. I think it's quite a norm here too (Fix me If I'm wrong) or a simple loft would have me sold. But! I honestly, really like the pack and I love that you did like 3 videos on this pack explaining all the new stuff. I am so looking forward for this Friday!

Frayy Y In America some universities have bunk beds or the two separate beds can be bunked at your request by the school but some schools like mine don’t allow it? I’m not sure since they said it was uk based if they have bunk beds in their dorms?
@SomeoneBeginingWithI5 жыл бұрын
Yeah at my UK university we have a kitchen in the building but we are strictly not allowed to bring fridges or microwaves for our rooms because of the fire rules. If you have a medical condition and your medicines need to be kept in the fridge then you can have a mini-fridge in your room just for the medicines, but that's the only exception and you need a letter from your doctor. The way they've done it is really American and we should be able to change things to be like a different country/culture if we edit the lots.

@@solarmoth4628 Ah, I see. I feel like bunk beds are like the universal floor space saver for people that live in small rooms. Well, can't complain now though. The pack is coming out soon anyway! And it looks promising. Fingers crossed someday they'll have bunk beds put in haha.

This dorm situation in discover university is just so American, I understand, because the game is made by Americans, but like, al the things everyone is talking about that you obviously can't have in a dorm, I have in my country. My dorm right now is more like a studio apartment so I obviously have a kitchen, pets are allowed. But even when I had a dorm with roommates, we had a kitchen, we can paint the walls and drill holes in them. Commons is not a thing in my country, so dorms are just rooms in townhouses. Dorms don't come with anything, so you need to buy your own furniture etc. I just feels really annoying that you constantly have to load other lots for just being able to cook a good meal or cheats to even rearrange the furniture in the room to have it fit more nicely

@alafuroz50835 жыл бұрын
Actual this isn’t American, it’s pretty general , funny enough in my country we weren’t allowed stoves in our dorms as well as pets and we had to walk to our cafeteria which was on the other side of campus. We weren’t even allowed to bring certain things to the hostel. Our school had an unfortunate event where a stove caught on fire and burnt part of the school so it became a new rule. However that was a private school , public universities usually allow stoves but their dorms are more shitty than this .

This is just my opinion. I'm not hating on this amazing build: The only thing I disagree with in this video is giving britechester. (An extremely rich historical university in the modern world) a really crappy tv and poor common room. The students don't purchase the items that go in the common room so it shouldnt reflect their financial status. The rooms should reflect that. The common room should atleast have a flatscreen tv (because lets be honest its all thats sold nowadays, this is 2019 not 2007). The couches should look comfortable and clean. Edit: The computers shouldn't be old bricks. And the furniture should actually be neatly placed because no one just pushes a couch diagonal. This is a school building still. The RA's are still in charge of keeping the dorms in order as well. I think their individual rooms or clutter around the dormitory should be thrown around or placed clumsily but the actual furniture should be neatly placed. Maybe a laundry room would work out nicely as well.

My only experience (in the last 16 years) was a residential trip in 2017 and even then we had a kitchen in each dorm and a small room each for the 2 nights we stayed in the dorms
@willow81863 жыл бұрын
I love that you can put in your own dining hall, had no idea, I’ll go do that! It’s so annoying that you have to go through a loading screen every time you need to eat, or wait for random people to drop off food.

Hello American college/ university student here, and I’d like to clear up some peoples questions about dorms in the U.S. First roommates: In almost all American colleges you have to have a roommate. There normally are some single rooms on campus but they are only given out in special circumstances (mentally or physically handicapped people, gender non conforming people, or people with service animals). And in some colleges you might not just get one roommate but two or three. And the rooms are almost never large enough to comfortably accommodate all the people living in them. Second kitchens: Unlike in the pack most American dorms have at least one kitchen in the building. Though I have heard of quite a few schools that have none in dorms. And the kitchens are ALWAYS communal, I have never heard of a American school where the kitchens are in a dorm room. Three, bathrooms: I would say the majority of schools have a communal bathroom that you share with your whole floor. Though some schools (including mine actually) have smalls bathrooms that two dorm rooms share. Again bathrooms are never just for one dorm room, they are always communal to some degree. Fourth apartments: Many schools also offer apartment style accommodations on campus as well. In apartments you still always have roommates sometimes that means sharing the apartment and sometimes it still means you have to share your room. But in apartments you do get to have your own living room, kitchens, and bathroom(s). The downsides to apartments is that there very expensive (1,000-3,000$ per semester) and you still have to share a small space with many people. Lastly why do they do this: The short answer is that American colleges are not funded by the government and thus try to extort students of all their money. For example, why would you build more expensive larger dorms when you could shove all your students in to small shared dorms to save money and space? Or, why would you let students make their own food when you could force them to eat shity dinning hall food and charge them a lot. So basically American dorms are just slightly fancier prisons that you have to pay an arm and a leg to live in.

There are some schools (NYU for example) that have 3-4 people dorm rooms with kitchens in them.

Rachel Ahrens My university offers singles, you just have to pay a little extra for them
@solarmoth46285 жыл бұрын
I have my own bathroom in America there’s a lot of variation because i had a communal one freshman year. If you’re in a city it’s more likely that you’re standard housing offered by the school will be apartment style with a kitchen. The upperclassmen apartments are actually pretty big with a kitchen in every apartment and then a big one downstairs and they don’t cost extra. We also have some singles but it depends on the building and usually they don’t cost more. Every college has a different system it seems like nothing is standardized amongst them besides the fact that they offer on campus housing.
@rachelahrens74785 жыл бұрын
luna first of all I want to say that you’re very lucky with having your own bathroom. And I also acknowledge that there is variation between schools and from what I’ve heard I agree that it’s especially apparent in colleges in cities.I was just trying to be as general as possible but I may have presented my own biases based on my experiences at my own college.
@solarmoth46285 жыл бұрын
Rachel Ahrens I should be more clear that my college isn’t in a city lol but some of my friends do go to city colleges. We have like four different styles of housing in our smallish campus. It’s a public state school in a suburb. Mines like a normal dorm, it just that every room happens to have its own bathroom which is actually amazing because you only share it with one person instead of like 24. although besides freshman housing you only share bathrooms with 1-3 other people at most. I definitely agree with a lot of what you said.

0:50 they don’t have kitchens for reasons... that reason is it’s based on North American dorms. Very realistic.

Realistic for North American students. Not for the rest of the world. Which is a bigger group.

Many dormitories don’t allow to cook by stove because they are afraid of fire hazards and smell of food may disturb others who live there too, I guess.

Could you use the doorm lot to build a real apartment house, with different sims living there?
@TanyaOwens5 жыл бұрын
Guess you can redesign it all like lil studio apartments/suites with kitchens and change the lot type to residential and request roommates. It can then simulate apartments, but everyone will be paying one humongous rent.

I appreciate this build so much. I'm not a fan of all of the dark wood floors, walls, and furniture together its so dreary to me. The renos I've watched so far have so much dark everything all blending together it's just...no. Beautifully done, thank you! Not really sure how I feel about the different colored furniture pieces and them not being straight (it makes my OCD hurt haha) but I would definitely use this in game, with the furniture maybe not crooked lol

You could set up a fraternity or sorority as a club using "get together" and then just "recruit" by who moves in with you or on campus. You also could make a custom "greek house" to live in, and set that as the place you gather.
@romarine59675 жыл бұрын
One way to do kind of a sorority/fraternity would be to restrict access to the dorm to one gender and to one of the Uni organization based on school spirit, you can do that in manage lot type. And with Get together put those people into a club to better manage group activities.

Plans so far - just worked out for those towers at Foxbury, but one is going to be reasonably conventional - a few storeys high, common floor, dorm floor, and instead of a rooftop area, it's a storage area that's been repurposed as a club. The other is going to be an 'experimental community' featuring small but almost fully-functional tiny houses in a micro-town setting (almost fully functional. No stoves, obviously). Like they've taken this dorm structure and gone, "How can we make this an Experience?" Anyway, I've decided Britechester is Sydney Uni and Foxbury is Macquarie Uni. It's even red! Unsatisfactory lack of robots and lobsters, but still. Feels nice and familiar.
