Maybe if you haven’t filled in the bottom as of the time of this comment, you could add ballast so you can adjust the overall side-to-side stability in large waves. This would help in situations like when you lost the started boat to big waves, whereas with ballast you could just flip a switch to pump a 1-2 block deep space in the bottom of the boat full with water to lower the overall center of mass.

This could also prevent a situation similar to the tanker flipping in the hardcore survival series
