This is part 10 of the Building a Fume Hood series, the last in the series for now. I may add more content if I make any major changes to the fume hood. I know I have to replace the fan system and I have a few idea's about that already. For now I will just use up the box of PC fans I have. Once the fail I will put them in the scrap pile. In this video I finish all wiring, seal the gaps inside with silicone sealant and install the ducting for the outlet.

Why don't you continue refining?

Thanks for watching. I do continue to refine but its winter in the UK and it rains almost everyday so I have only done a few very small batches, also I have been doing a couple of building projects in the home (Built an office for working from home and a couple of redecorations of bedrooms so time has been limited). I have been stockpiling some e-waste to make a couple more long video's with yield calculations and costings. I will start back up again as soon as the weather picks up.

@@scouseurbanminer5106 I look forward to your work. Also, how can I find the website of the gold refining forum you subscribe to? Where can I find Hoke’s books?

goldrefiningforum.com/ here is a link to the gold refining forum. It's well worth registering an account, they have the answer to everything you can think of. They do require that you keep to the forum rules, and they expect you do your homework first before posting, but they will help you if you get stuck. goldrefiningforum.com/threads/printer-friendly-copy-of-hokes-book.17706/ Here is a link to a screen copy of hokes book. You will need to register an account on GRF to access the PDF file, but if you just register an account and introduce yourself in the newbies section one of the admins will respond to you and provide you with the basic stuff. Hope this helps.

Nice job! Thanks for sharing Did you have any luck with fan survival? I have a big barrel of them sitting around, too 😂

Hi Charlie, hahaha the original fans lasted about a month, first one packed in after 8 hours but it was right behind a batch of approx 1.6kg of RAM BGA's in HCL on full heat. It took the brunt of the damage and didn't really have much chance of survival. The final one of the set gave up the ghost after about 6 weeks, but I didn't actually do that much refining. My own fault really for leaving solutions in the hood while the fans where not switched on. I reinstalled a second batch and kept the fans running for longer periods and got a good bit longer out of them but they too gave up. The fume hood is too bulky and weighs too much to keep pulling it out and swapping them all out. I eventually swapped them all out for a car radiator fan sealed to the framework which so far has lasted about 4 months but I tend to leave this on very low just to keep some air being pulled through. Works off the same speed controller but has a turn on voltage a lot higher than PC fans so if I power it down I have to remember to increase the motor speed to max to get it started, once its running I can lower it down to about 25% speed. The whole thing is still a work in progress :) If you can come up with a way of fast swapping PC fans out, then you might as well use them before they go the scrap yard. I am thinking of using them to make a wind wall. I would like to mount this behind me where I work so it continually blows air past me toward the hood and minimises any fumes coming my way when the doors are open and I am stood in front of it. Probably wont work but I might give it a go. Cant think of any other uses for them. If I had to build another one I would definitely go for lighter building materials, maybe even just sheets of decent grade plastic secured together with angle iron nuts and bolts. Make it as movable as possible so I can get round the back to swap things out easier. On the plus side the fridge compressor is still going strong. I am very surprised at that.

@scouseurbanminer5106 ooh yeah, thanks for the insights! I have loads of plexiglass and acrylic to consider. They are cut offs, but pallets of great stuff, some over an inch thick and large enough peices to make coffee tables. I bet I have enough opaque white panels to make the main chamber. It is maybe twice as thick as that (perspex?) you have, so it wouldn't likely need as much skeletal support like the pallet wood. I had been thinking about keeping a single strong blower fan out of the fumes path. Blow into a y shape behind hood and use the suction to pull out the fumes. Thanks for the update and info. 👍

Do it Charlie, make a video as you go, record everything. Use tinkercad to make a basic 3D design. If you have not used 3d modelling before this is the easiest program. I use it all the time as its made for kids in school, which is about my level of CAD abilities hahahaa. I would go with putting the fan either on the top or one of the sides. Having it at the back is more awkward for swapping it out, unless you have the space that is. I dont, I live in a large house but have a very small back yard. Putting the fans at the back was a mistake for me. You need easy access to it as it will be the most changed thing. Like I said I'd go with as light as possible in weight. Doesn't need to hold much weight, just a decent base and a simple light framework for the rest. I will definitely go that route in a few years when it comes time to rebuild. Plexi would be ideal if you have enough. I've subscribed to you channel :) I want to see the build :)

Also look into a venturi set up for your exhaust. Alledgedly this is what the long time hobby refiners do.. There is info on the gold refining forum about it. Might be worth planning this into the build before you even put anything together. Hope this helps mate

@scouseurbanminer5106 ooh thanks. Tinkercad oh boy... I havn't tried this. I might see the end of my down time if I start. 😂 Spent high-school on an array of autodesk products. CAD mostly and 3dsmax. Thanks for the ideas. I have room to add instead of replace. I might convert my current jury rigged fume hood into a spot for electrolysis. With some crystals growing, there could be some good videos. I have been putting off making a new channel for fefining, but I do plan to soon. Deciding how I want to go. I have too many hobbies like Mike from omegageek 😂
