Building a Garden Fence

This garden fence was built because the birds were eating my blueberries. A trench was dug 10-12” down around the perimeter to deter chipmunks and rabbits from getting in. All the materials were bought at the local building supply store.

That’s cool, but the mice will be able to get under that no problem fyi. Get one of those buckets with the flip lid and leave it in there so when they do you’ll know and you will also catch them right away.

Good to know. This is my first garden, so no veggies or critters yet. I built the fence mainly to keep the birds away from my blueberries and blackberries.

@@JShawFurniture I really like what you built and think you’ll enjoy the ‘fruits’ of your labor… I’m in a war with the mice right now here in Vancouver in my garden and the bucket traps are saving my life!

if you want to keep rabbits and such out you need to dig till you get ground water seeping out in to the ditch any less and they will find a way in. also another downside to this fencing is its that much harder for beneficiary insects to get to the plants inside to pollinate the flowers. its not that they cant get inside they just have to expend more energy to get to the flowers so its a choice if they want to do that when other flowers are easier to get too

That makes sense how digging down to water would make it impenetrable, maybe if I had an excavator, but I think the bunnies will be deterred after a couple tries and go to the neighbors permaculture instead. My wife also thought it could be a challenge for bees getting in though the bird netting on top has 1.75” openings so they should be ok. The plan is to get honey bees in the spring. Looking forward to blueberry picking next summer!

@@JShawFurniture its not just honey bees. even some birds are polinators. the most well known one is a humming bird. but excluding those the there is still the butterfly and bumblebees are generaly bigger then the mesh you used. yeah they could fly though the bigger mesh but most will just move on to much trouble for the reward.

We do get a good amount of hummingbirds and butterflies here. Hadn’t considered them as pollinators but you make a good point. For modifying, the net on top could be removed or the upper wire could be cut/adjusted to let them in. Do you grow berries, what do you do to keep the berry snatching birds out?

@@JShawFurniture yeah i mostly grow raspberries and believe me i have enough to share with the birds. of course its private use so if i lose a couple 100 i still have 1000's in a good year

Can you tell me what you used for the top netting!? I can't seem to find that at my local home depot or menards. :(
