Plumber using our beam saw was definitely a scare. I had an HVAC tech take my saw when I was 17, years went upstairs to cut a block.. Ran the saw across his arm and was bleeding bad running down the stairs to get to his truck. I helped him wrap it up and he split.. I don't raise my voice often, but someone using a saw that isn't experienced scares me.

Question about why you drop your headers? I see a few people do it but to me it seems like it’d be better to keep it high just in case of a window change order is there a reason why you drop them or just habit?

I notice when you frame the walls the on the ground one side of all the framing is flush. Is it more important to have flush framing on the inside or outside? Recently helped with T&G on an interior and some studs protruded out more than others so we had a lot of shimming to do.

Hey Matt! Another great video. So interesting to see how this works. I do have a question, if you've got the time. What are the pieces of wood you put between the studs? I'd assume they are to strengthen the wall, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, what is the advantage of using 4x4s instead of 2x4s for some of the studs? Is this also just for strength, or is this a different reason? What makes your choice between the two?
@MattBangsWood
@MattBangsWood 3 ай бұрын
Studs run top to bottom, just create the wall. Headers are the 6x8 material that goes ABOVE the window. This is an engineers preference after calculating the roof load above. Top cripples (little 2x6) go above the header. The sills (create the window sill) go under the window rough opening and are just (2) 2x6. The bottom cripples go underneath the sill to support it. Our blocking we do at 3'6 and 4'6 and it runs horizontal. This is just to strengthen the wall. It's done with 2x6. Any 4x6 or 6x6 that goes into the wall as a full height piece of material is just done to achieve shear values engineers want, basically.. it's a big piece of wood that we attach plywood to in order for us to not let the building fall over.

Careful how much you drink water, it can flush out vital nutrients and electrolytes that your body needs to function (yes, you can die from it, water poisoning). Why don't you slam the headers up against the double top plate and build the window opening down from there? I almost never set my headers at height if there is a size change up and down its easy peasey to change.
@MattBangsWood
@MattBangsWood 3 ай бұрын
My main reason is to cater to engineers who want perforated shear walls. Where we strap at the header. They rely on the header for strap to nail into.. So it’s just common practice to hold them low, although I’d like to slam and frame down.

The price of gas and electricity is too high we must use Japanese hand saws and other hand saws. Also the air nailer is fast but mindless, missing placements, hard to pull out missed shots, over powering,danger ,terrifying,and the scare is counterproductive.
