Another alternative gather your finances, go home and build once the money is finished return and do the same. It does not matter how long it takes you to finish your home as long as your in control. Speaking from experience.

I'm so sorry for what you guys went through. I can't imagine the mental stress, even to make it worse you're nor there physically to handle the situation. But at least you were able to find someone better who shined the light as to what was really going on..the house looks beautiful as well. I have learned something. I am sorry to hear the issues you went through. Pls always find the people who are expert in the different work you want to do. Find them yourself via other people who ate building and recommended to you and make sure you see their work before you use them.

I've heard so many horror stories of people who build houses when they're abroad and the people they trust break that trust. It's so sad. I'm so sorry you and your hubby had to go through this. I can't imagine how mentally and financially draining it must have been.

I have decided when I build I will have a written agreement with whoever I worked with and if any repair they should come and do it .I tell u I learn the hard way too

yes from now on, written agreement is the way to go. Some people just love the money but dont want to give you the value.

Is sad when people you entrusted with your property mess up. This is just our fear building back home but it's a must though. People can really take advantage of people abroad when building or doing any projects for them

Fix cameras on you sight to see what is going around your premises. Only use recommended people to do jobs. Work with a trusted hardware to control the amount of cement taken. Ift the fundi ask for20 bags of cement, only give them 10 bags. Ask them to keep the empty bags used and show them to you. That how builder are making us to. do

It is draining enough even when one is supervising one’s own house. I feel bad for you and your experience. My advice: Never contract people to build your house when you are not around unless you are ready to be disappointed. People make mistakes other steal. The ones that are trustworthy are very very few. Otherwise have a reputable company do it in which case you pay a lot.

I feel ur pain, im living in Germany single mum and building back in kenya. I put also a break and im looking for trusted company to do finishing. Otherwise i will be going there do something and come back. Im also soooo drained😢

You can be drained for sure. Just hold on and save your money. It will give you so much peace. Almost everyone you work with want to take something from you. They don't care if you go sleepless nights to get the money or not. We've seen a good progress since we came back and I'm glad with it.

Waah! This is so sad. Atleast heri wangeimba materials but wafanye kazi poa. One of the tip we've learnt along the way is , don't buy in bulk and put the materials on site , zitaiibiwa. Pangana na msee wa hardware yenye iko karibu nawe to just buy materials for that day. People are heartless but hold on to that dream, one day it will come true.

Yes dear. Thats an impo lesson. Shida yao sasa they could steal with the hardware. One Confirmed that he once brought back the cement and sold it. We stopped buying there too. Yaani you can't trust anyone.

In this I am with you. I somehow got lucky and got a foreman who only would exaggerate costs but not that much. And because he was just aiming at buying a motorbike, I let him get away with it and I completed my house without much events.

Weeeuh some people only focus on short term goals. We also let him go and we shall complete it. I'm glad we worked with engineer too despite him not wanting now the situation could have been messier.

I know someone who came back, did all costs with a construction company, signed the contract and everything was done for him. He went back to the UK and would just send money direct to the company. No friends,family,relatives involved. And the work was perfectly done. Thats the move right now, i dont trust anyone i know. Me too, just hired with the construction company. Less stress, perfect work.

my parents had similar situation but not that bad. he went home and supervised the remainder of the project. All that was done poorly that our people are ok living with, he had them redone. being absent is very expensive, poor work and unfinished project. very frustrating.

Too sad to hear this. Related to your story, I was intending to build in Kenya from overseas. I had to first fence and dig the borehole to ensure security and that enough water was available during construction to reduce costs. Even though I employed all the due diligence by ensuring that photos of what had been done were sent daily before I paid, the contractor failed to pay for the materials collected from the hardware shop to finish the borehole, stating that I had not remitted the funds. The hardware owner had developed trust from the fencing job. He gave the materials knowing that he would be paid the same day, as I used to remit money after a job was done. When he got the money on the same day, he failed to pay the hardware shop. Recently, in December 2023, when I went to Kenya, the hardware owner came demanding his money. I gave him the transfer evidence and he is now pursuing the guy with the law enforcement. I didn't lose anything, since my job was finished, but I really sympathized with the hardware guy.

It's sad that some people see the opportunity for selfish gains. They will never prosper anyway if there is someone else crying about their work. I hope the hardware guy succeed. For us we just let go and these days the contractor hide when he is about to meet. 😂

I'm so disappointed as a member of the construction industry.Always hire skilled,honest and trustworthy personell.This by having a history of the work they have done in other places.Good site management and good quality work should be a key before you establish yourself as a contractor

True. It's ts important to hire a skilled and honest person. The person was doing a great job and had other projects going on. They are great. Things changed on our side when I was sick and couldn't go to the site frequently. I didn't realize. They became worse when I came to America and we had to stop because we had finished the skeleton part of the house. Which we involved the engineer. It's good. But I guess the person became greedy.

Why do people bother with these houses when they will hardly even use them? Lets spell this out AGAIN for folks out there: Kenyans are a unique lot. We are pathological liars and cheats. Its our upbringing. Trust your own parent, sibling etc at your own risk

I'm always straight forward and I expect the same. Once I make a deal I fulfil my end. It shouldn't be that difficult. It's better to work with companies even if it's expensive. You can use a house for various purposes not only living in them.
