One of the hardest lessons my wife and I learned was that it's okay to allow others to get involved in our "mess". Letting others help is a great sign of maturity that you'll gain wisdom from as time goes by. I'm right there with you Jesse on learning the maintenance and troubleshooting steps. If you should decide to outsource some of it in the future, you'll be able to have a much more intelligent conversation with the service provider. Plus you'll be able to better gauge the value of their work or tell when something isn't being done right. Best of all, you'll have knowledge to share with your kids some day. Cheers!!!

I'm so happy to see you two taking a respite from your killer schedule!! Very early in my military career I learned the value of delegation. The toughest part for me was accepting the reality that delegation does NOT mean relinquishing. It merely means sharing and utilization of an already existing resource (s) in order to accomplish a mission in the most expedient and efficient manner. You did it!! I hope the dentist went well and that you won't have a protracted recovery period, Jesse.

It doesn't matter to me, I am just watching and enjoying. I watch in my woodworking shop, and Jesse and Alyssa are my adopted children. My Dad always said, " Do something, even if it's wrong", explaining that wrong can be remedied, doing nothing never works. These two wonderful kids have the American spirit and can do attitude that makes America great, and I never see bug a boo complaining.

Tip: that five foot tall clean out pipe down by the leach field; cut it off below ground level and out it in a box to protect it. Then take a pvc gasketed cap and pull the gasket out. Set it loosely on top of the pipe. That way if the tank ever backs up, the water will relieve itself at the lowest point available- AKA not inside your house. Saves you from unpleasantness later on.

I suppose if he covered it with a creeper that would be fine, but it is hard to make a boulder wall look GOOD. Even the "pros" make crappy looking rock walls. How do I know? I used to build boulder walls where just the materials cost $30k and if you scratched the face of the boulder that the homeowner wanted out, you had to buy a new boulder. I think maybe if Jesse wanted to keep a giant mound of boulders for 5 years or so and wait till there was a better time to learn how to build a proper wall that looks good.... Other than that, he should farm it out to a pro. Plus there is a lot of engineering that goes into a retaining wall, even one for mostly decorative purposes. It is waaaay to easy to build a wall that will blow out in 3-5 years and potentially hurt person or property.

There are always people who are very negative in here!!! I always wonder if you read the comments the next day or so. Anyways. I love the videos. I don't know about the recent drama, and judging by the ones that pop up on the side, you said something to offend. Oh boy. I don't have time for their crap. I always wonder how people can be so wrapped up in negativity to constantly post to your videos. It's generally the same people. I wonder if you guys roll your eyes and just laugh at the internet tough guys and knowitalls. I know I do. Anyways, my point is, I really enjoy the videos. EVEN if they are out of order. Heck, I still haven't watched them all anyways. So sometimes it's summer for me. You know what I like the most? That you guys are prolly late 20's or early 30's. You guys have a great work ethic. It's refreshing to see. Maybe look up a video on what's wrong with millennial generation. I am glad you have shattered that mold. So I wanted to at least say that. I hope you are proud of yourselves and your accomplishments. If its waning, please know you guys are doing a great job. Now I don't care about order of videos. Or have the first darn clue about these sip panels everyone keeps bringing up. Or the waterproofing. Or all of the "expert" opinions you get quite regularly. I quite enjoy the videos of the little things. I was thinking the other day, it would be cool if you did a couple videos on what tools work and don't work.What you will never buy again and what not. Those are priceless imho. So keep doing you. Do you every day. And if you make a million dollars on here, congratulations! I'll be here to watch it. Sincerely, you guys are great people. And if you make mistakes along the way, IT MEANS YOU ARE WORKING!!!! Because one thing I have learned in my 46 years, is if you aren't screwing up, you aren't doing anything. So I hope you continue to work hard, get videos when you can and continue your journey. On your level, on your pace. Remember, its YOUR house. Do it YOUR way. And if you have already completed this bad boy, then I look forward to the next 100 videos that document that journey. But I will certainly not BASH you guys for the time frame it took to release the video. Anyways, I appreciate you guys. I appreciate that you are sharing your story with us. I appreciate the highest quality videos and I do actually LIKE the music. So thank you. P.s. May I please have permission to use your photo of the bald eagles on the branch? It is simply beautiful. I want to put it as my banner on FB, even though I rarely get on there. Too much drama.

When I installed my septic system I was told by the Health department and building inspector that the septic tank had to be no more than 25 feet from the building. The drain field could be any distance away, as long as it was below the tank. Because I have loam over deep coarse sand, the drain field had to be no more than 18" deep. I asked about freezing and was told that bacteria in the system would generate plenty of heat to prevent it. Sure enough, the snow melts over the septic tank weeks before anyplace else, and the system has been trouble free for 25 years. Never even had to open the clean-out plug. So very different.

Good, professional job. Done my own about 20yrs ago, which was a big mistake. Started having a blockage about 6months later which I sourced to somewhere close to mid-lenght. Ended up digging a manhole and opening the pipe, which turned out to be about 6-7ft up from the blockage. Seems to block every 6months or so if left unseen to, but takes 2 mins now to open manhole cover and run chimney brush down every 3months or so. Not exactly sure what the issue is as the blockage doesn't correspond to where the joints are. Possibly a crack but can't feel anything obvious when pushing the brush down. Suppose I should get it checked by camera, but if you discount the 2mins work (and 2mins foul odour), it's not the worst issue in the world. Long story short...some things are best left to the competent.

The chronology of the septic shouldn't really matter. A video about hooking up the septic and another video about plowing snow have very little to do with each other. The comments about the music just makes me smile. We receive the same types of comments, either people really like the music or hate it (if you go by the comments). Personally I enjoy some music while watching scenes that may contain good visual information but otherwise has no audible importance (such as engines running, hammering, shovels clinking). I think without some music you would be seeing some pretty dang dull videos.

We hired a contractor for excavation. There's no way we could have done it ourselves. Your backhoe wouldn't have made a dent in our ground. All work was done with a CAT 320 Trackhoe. We had one operator and he worked alone to the point that he even hauled in some of the material. Our Septic tank literally sits in the middle of solid rock. It took an entire day with a huge hammer on the Trackhoe to dig the hole for the tank. We had previously (years ago) hauled in almost 60 loads of fill for our drainfield. Not all the rock on our site is solid granite. Some is slate and he was able to dig the entire foundation with a ripper tooth and bucket. When it came to frost footing at the walkout and one of the deck footings, they are very shallow as they are on solid rock. He also dug the trenches for the well, the electric and phone. No other contractors did any excavation on site. The only inspections we had to wait for were Electric rough in and the Septic system.

This video really resonated with me. I am 58 soon to be 59. When I was 30 I built our 1800 sq ft house trying to do everything myself. It took 8 months to finish. I remember digging the waterline by hand with shovels so not to pay someone with a backhoe to dig for me. That took a week of evenings to do by hand. The farther I went in I started to give up a little control and have a few contractors do things. For example the foundation, shingling the roof, drywall and carpet. Everything else I did myself. Getting everything in the dry may override your desire for doing it yourself! Over the next 28 years I've done 3 other houses and several garages. I've learned that letting contractors help move you along and keeping you on schedule is a good thing! There are times that it makes a lot of since. You have to choose your battles and decide which ones are better to let someone else fight. I enjoy your journey and look forward to all your videos! Keep up the good work and let someone else change your oil! You've got a house to get in the dry!

Are you guys living is a part of the world where the ground just doesn’t freeze? I mean, more power to you if everything works, but in my neighborhood, all of that would be frozen solid.

Hey,out here in the PNW,we have been having the WEIRDEST winter.

Seriously, though, what’s the deal with the frostline out in your part of the world? Up here, 8 feet is a minimum, and we go deeper and/or insulate if we have to cross under a road.

You must be up North somewhere,but we're at about the latitude of Boston,just out west.The frost line doesn't get very deep,usually. About 18 inches is the standard depth for burying lines for temp protection.

Why is the septic tank over 100ft away from the "house"? Did they install the leechfield already? I've been questioning why they do things thruout these videos.

Back filling with the sand and dirt or even your drain rock and dirt is a perfect time to have what is called a steel wrist. It allows the bucket to tilt and turn all around. Really cool attachment for a mini excavator.

Kathi Pauling I know they don't own an excavator. They have mentioned it several times that the excavator that we've seen has to go back, meaning rented. It doesn't change my opinion that a steel wrist would be a great attachment for the excavator.

I think I zoned out after Jessie said about it being a pain that they’d need to dig out the drain rock to put the sewage pipe in, so I might have missed his explanation for this but why did he choose to bring people in to dig a trench when the ground was frozen? Why wasn’t it planned out & dug before?
@ConnorFitzD

Because they are 'Project planning' themselves, which I can imagine is a lot easier said than done. To me it feels like it's very much a step by step process instead of full end to end planning. There are technically advantages to doing it this way in that you can plan the next step once you know it will 'work'. However its muhh more time consuming and expensive. They've always said money isn't a massive blocking point on this project and of them it's more to see if they can do it their way and make it work.

Okay, I’m obviously missing something. When did they ( the plumbing guys) connect the sewer drain pipe to the actual septic tank.
@paulcopeland9035
@paulcopeland9035 6 жыл бұрын
Right after they drained the test water. The test had to be made up to the existing pipe, so that is where the connection is.

It's sad to see such negative comments on your vids about "messed up timelines" and "no updates". We all get caught up with our lives and yes you are putting yours up on the web, but your still human. You make mistakes and you need more time then you planned, shit happens. You are personally putting up your own videos and aren't a tv program. Your video schedule is dictated by what your day/time allows. Keep up the work you are doing for yourselves and enjoy your home how you see fit.
