How wonderful that these skills still exist in this iPad/smart phone led world! As an engineering apprentice through to an Industrial Engineer in the 60's I love to see the skills I learned still being used. It just gives me thrills to see. To think these lovely engines were designed with pencil and paper and slide rule and worked from the final design albeit with little tweaks here and there as per initial trials. And, the cleanliness of that work area, it looks like a typical power station. Great video, you seem to know what turns us engineers on!

All the people rugged up and two Sheilas walk buy wear string tops at 0:43 I shivered just seeing that, and I’m in Sydney Australia with 28C temps. I was in York back in 2000 and thoroughly love it. You see how grand the station is and how magnificent it would of been back prior to Beecham. The NRM was a blast as a child I dreamt of going there and RHDR and I ticked those off along with the BFR in wales. Been back to Europe many times but not back to my ancestral home for a while and I will remedy that shortly. At 21;07 Latin to English translation “Private Risk Public Benefit”.

Great to see this wonderful piece of engineering taking shape and retaining the engineering skills to do it. I wonder what skills will need to be retained to restore/rebuild electric locos with all their electronic systems or whether there will be the same enthusiasm and passion.

Hi, thanks for your nice words its appreciated, well for me a electric loco will never hold my interest like steam does but that just my age i guess, cheers...Mal

@@YorkshireMalsTrains I agree. . As a young boy we used to travel regularly on long steam hauled trains from the Midlands into London termini. As I walked past and felt the heat of the locomotive which was now at the end of its journey, it always impressed me that the huge train had travelled all that distance primarily by the sweat and skill of the two men on the footplate and who were in harmony with their machine. Without detracting from the skills and knowledge of a diesel or electric drivers, its not quite the same these days and I doubt whether repairing say a thyristor control or transformer will create the same satisfaction as machining, riveting or welding a lump of metal.
