Just make sure you wait long enough for the tank to cycle and test your water before you plant!

Interesting about the length of dark start. Did it before for a week with wood and then moved over to the snail-in-cycle method as explained in a Shrimply Explained vid on YT. So many ways to skin the cat these days. Lovely scape
@stephenmanning39784 ай бұрын
@@rionbioscience yea it will vary, which is why testing is helpful. But you can also visually see pretty easily once you get through cycling by looking out for diatoms and waiting for that phase to clear up. I’ve found even with a biological starter it takes several weeks for the tank to properly cycle.

Love the look of the space & tank. I see those shelves & all I see is room for a couple more tanks (10+ long). 😎 I've got deep-planted, natural, jungle tanks & each one is different - even with the same plants, over time. I like seeing all the layers of the tank evolve from the clay, soil, sand - all the way up through the top.
@stephenmanning39784 ай бұрын
Appreciate the comment! The idea has definitely crossed my mind to turn those room dividers into big vertical built in aquariums, but that’s a little outside my budget at the moment and being on the third floor of a condo water weight is definitely a consideration. 🤣 I’m thinking of doing a few nano setups (like

it looks nice, but is it really low maintenance? aquarium of that size i think cannot be the one, one glass scraping session or 10-15% water change are already a big chore it equipped top notch and dark start method took very long time, i mean with vallisneria, you could just really put it from the start with very mild light regime it would establish and grow easily anyways, thanks for the video, looking forward to see how this project progress!
@stephenmanning39784 ай бұрын
@halo2something I would say this is about as low maintenance as you can get in a tank of this size, unless you’re trying to do a no water change setup or something like that. Of course a smaller tank will be easier. Val’s will probably be fine without dark start but crypts are notorious for melting, an issue I didn’t have here, it’s also the safer method for fish imo.

my ocd mind cant not see that your lights are not sitting level to each other or the tank left side of left light needs to drop. but the hood you have on them is still going to be off. Grrrr. lol

Nothing wrong with showing your face while talking about setup and explaining different things, you are showing the tank when setting it up, included enough of the finished tank. I see no problem with how you executed the video. You have an easy to listen to voice and I was interested all the way through 👍

The definition of a dark also involves adding the sand along with the aqaurium soil. The sand is full of silicates and promotes diatoms which in turn can hinder fresh plant growth. Please educate yourself before putting out a video to the world on HOW to dark start a tank.
@stephenmanning39784 ай бұрын
My friend, had you watched the whole video you would have seen that I did dark start the tank with the aquasoil. The layer of sand I use is extremely thin and therefore any impact quite minimal. I’ll also add I’ve used this approach on multiple tanks and had great success each time. Keep in mind there is more than one way to be successful in this hobby. Best of luck and let’s enjoy the hobby together respectfully!

Does not make any sense. No waste e.g. ammonia from fish no beneficial bacteria
@stephenmanning39783 ай бұрын
Plenty of organic matter in the soil and on the hardscape to get the process started, you’d be surprised. Using a biological starter also helps speed the process, as I said in the video.
