I have a strange habit of making all of my own materials, i.e., ground scatter, weathering powders, rust, etc. I went to the dollar store and got women's eye makeup to use as weathering powder (medium) as it sticks better than any chalks I've ever used. It comes in just about any color you could imagine. I use food coloring in ground chalk to give my ground up chalk some color and it works quite well. I never throw anything away including bits of scrap wood that I cut up into very small bits and make scrap wood piles to place around the layout. I also save any sanding dust and saw dust that I color with food coloring or acrylic paints and use it for ground material or even a saw dust pile near my sawmill. I make my own hay bales (round ones) with cut up jute string. I also make my own rust powder by putting 0000 steel wool in a quart jar and fill with vinegar and place in the kitchen window for a few weeks. After it all turns a nice rust color i pour it out into a flat 11x14 stainless photo tray (a flat baking dish will also work) and wait a couple of weeks for it to dry. Then I use a single edge razor blade to pulverize it into a powder and store it in little snuff cans. You can use it as a weathering powder or mix with PVA glue and stick it to the sides of buildings or railroad stock. I save all sponge rubber to go in my electric coffee grinder, a little acrylic paint and make my own ground scatter or leaves to go on trees. I have a Nandena bush growing out back that when the little red berries fall off they make good tree armatures. I paint them brown with my airbrush for regular trees and grey for aspens or ash trees. I make grass tufts out of an old wig my wife got me at the dollar store. Just add acrylic paint and glue. I scratch build all my platforms, coal staithes and loading docks. I have a ton of lichen growing out back on the hill behind my house used for bushes, etc. I could go on and on but I better stop here. Cheers from eastern TN

Hi ya Sam. The platforms came out wonderfully. The watered down weathering powders seem easy to use. I would never have thought of scraping off the excess with a plastic card. Nor use a sandpaper block. Just a couple of new tips and techniques from Peaks 47. I have to be honest, I am a little concerned with the steep plunge of the humpback bridge onto the road. That’s going to play havoc with the vehicle’s front and rear bumpers! Lol. But being the professional that you are, I know you will find a way to deal with that. Great stuff, Sam. Thanks. See ya next time.
@peaks47194 жыл бұрын
Cheers Norman yep the road won’t be flat going to the bridge I need to make a transition so think il use the hardboard to flex it then perhaps have to refill it you know me it will evolve somehow 🙈

May I make a suggestion for the bridge road, which might make life easier and inexpensive to do. Try grit grade level 120 of black wet/dry sandpaper glued and shaped into place as you prefer. This is only a suggestion. It is your own layout so you carry on as you see fit. Best regards Mike
@peaks47194 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion Mike I’m already into it though

@@peaks4719 No problem. Maybe next time when you are trying to add texture to a road or something similar. Check out Jason Jensen Trains on KZbin. You'll be amazed at what he can do to enhance models etc. His skill set is on a par with Luke Towan. Some might even say it is higher. Out of interest what is the dimensions of your layout. Reason for asking, is that I am about to embark on my own layout and trying to judge what would be best. Anyway all the best and look forward to seeing how your own layout develops. Mike

Great tutorial Sam. looks good and I think the platform paving is excellent. My only negative is it looks like the bridge angle is way too steep. It seems that poor old lorry has to negotiate a 45 degree angled rise to go over the top. The grasswork in between the pavers is a nice addition and will look great onc it all comes together.
@peaks47194 жыл бұрын
Cheers I’m working hard to reduce the angle and i intend on the lane not being flat so I can help transition it , I hope fill it the plan to loose the angle , appreciate your point. Very new to this sort of modelling 😬

Hi Sam great video thinking of using the same techniques. What laquer do you use, is it a Matt type spray varnish?
@peaks47194 жыл бұрын
Cheers Gary yep a Matt lacquer still leaves a sheen , to be honest gloss would be ok in this circumstance because your weathering and sanding afterwards anyway
@newbottlestation49164 жыл бұрын
Another fantastic video loved how the weathering powder really popped when you put the spray on. Making me think about ditching my station idea and doing a scratch build as well. What higher is the platform if you don’t mind me asking?

Cheers mate I’ve gone with 20mm same as the metcalfe kits , it might not be bang on , but for me if it looks right it is right
