You don't need to be an engineer to design PCBs. There's no logic in the ribbon cable, just traces and vias.

So cool to see you cover this too, Tito! You should totally try out aluminum too, it's such a better experience. Also, you should put the speaker in a different position behind the screen. You can see in my videos :)
@MachoNachoProductionsКүн бұрын
Thanks Marisa! I’ll definitely check that out! I was I having trouble trying to find a spot for the speaker. How’s the sound when it’s behind the screen?
@yourcoolunclemarisaКүн бұрын
@@MachoNachoProductions it's surprisingly decent, not muffled or anything. The speaker I used from the BOM is rather quiet, if you want to go louder, Joseph used a Nintendo switch speaker that goes in the same little nook and I imagine is significantly louder 💚

If it feels too small to play with for a long period of time, because of using the stock back plate of an SP, i bet a majority of 3rd party accessories of the era would still be compatible. Would love to see how this looks in one of those push-to-fit grips you use to get back in the day.

the SP was fine to start with. not really sure why anyone would want to do this.

Nice mod, but it looks like it'd be horrible to use if ever wanting to use the shoulder buttons. The target market of these retro handheld mods isn't getting any younger; not sure why nobody's targeting larger variety mods with larger screens.
@KalvinjjКүн бұрын
Ain't the Game Boy Macro just that tho? There's only so far you can increase those screens without them looking terrible anyway (...or not, Game Boy Player enters the fight)
@gyroninjamodder16 сағат бұрын
The shoulder buttons were rarely used from whar I remember, so I don't think it would be a big deal in practice.
@Kalvinjj16 сағат бұрын
@@gyroninjamodder On Super Mario World they perform the tasks from the Y and X buttons on the Super Nintendo if I recall, and on Drill Dozer they're pretty much essential. Frankly, it looks interesting but it's just taking a GBA SP and making it worse in every possible way.
@fluffycritterКүн бұрын
I'd been following this project for a while, and it's really cool to see it get a lot of support. The thing that puzzles me about it is why they went with surface-mount membrane buttons instead of just putting conductive traces on the PCB and then use the rubber button pads to actually make contact to get the original button feel and have less work to do, but it's still a really nice build and I am super tempted to this myself, especially now that there's that flex cable that makes the final assembly so much easier. I do wish they had a built-in headphone jack as part of the mod though.

Not my favorite form factor, but low key a big fan of the non destructive mods. I think the planning around those mods adds a nice challenge with the rule of not cutting up anything.

How about a gamecube X/Y button as the B button on any of the 2 face button consoles? It might make rolling for run and jump more comfortable. That or add an extra B button where the X button would be.

Funny enough, I use a GB emulator on my Playdate to play some classic games, and though some parts are a bit tricky (like mapping Start/Select to the crank), it works well enough in its current state. Glad to see that its design sensibilities have been studied to make a brand new GBA form, though I know a lot of folks feel like it's hand-cramp city.

Let's be real, they were sold in so many millions that there's still plenty mint ones as well. Not to mention the more beat up ones likely starting to need power button replacement and some extra annoyances. I even managed to find one that no matter what I did the charge LED would not work (replaced the LED, tried finding anything along it's route, no good).

Neat. This looks like something Nintendo themselves would've made, if they hadn't made the gba micro. The gba micro was probably a better idea for them though. Probably more comfortable to more hands and fits in more bags and pockets.

Funny enough, the two different yellow tones actually look quite good together. Interesting mod but frankly... kinda pointless. EDIT: About the screws and warping, indeed as you mentioned it's because of the resin print. Creep is part of their life always, and they're absolutely horrible to screw into, and will shatter easily if you need any force to screw anything on them. If screws are a tight fit, it's likely you'll have to tap the threads beforehand and use a metric/UNC screw instead of self-tappers then. In that case they'll also end up feeling a bit loose... there's no winning with functional parts on resin really.

I can do the vertical handhelds. But this has no room for my fingers to rest on the back. The rg35xx barely has enough room and that's the smallest I can handle. Id prefer something like the rg353v as far as room for my hands. Out of all my handhelds the stream deck has absolute perfect comfort. I can play that thing for 10 hours if I wanted to.
