I agree completely Will, give yourself some slack with cables, space to troubleshoot and flex to adapt. Power leads work themselves loose over time and if the lead is too taut to begin with, that’s only going to make it worse. Your best friend when things don’t work is a head torch so you can see what you’re doing. And if you’re putting your rig in a flight case buy one that’s bigger than you can imagine needing; you’ll eventually fill the space with things you don’t know you’ll need and in the meantime if your OCD gets too much, buy some blank plates.

Hah, I abandoned zip ties in my pedalboards for the exact same reasons you mentioned. If I need to keep things tidy, I use velcro or those twisty ties that can be undone easily.

Im jealous at the us who can use powersupply much more convenient than here in europe with out bulky 220 plugs, even our iec are less convenient if you look to the eu furman devices. On topic. Always bring a leatherman, spare tie wraps, tape, etc. If you are doong a big show even bring a soldering iron. Its not different than being a guitar/drum/key tech. Its a balance between looking professional and make sure everything is easy servicable. Also I think its good we go back a bit (not fully) to bigger cases like in the past where there is more space. The playback is so important just like a drumset which takes multiple flightcases/bags or multiple keyboards, and or amps/cabs too.

This is a great and very important topic. A lot of musicians friends of mine talk about cosmetic look and for me is not the most important thing on this job. I think is flexibility, expandability, reliability, and easy to deal with a bad cable or troubleshooting or a broke soldering . For me is very important (if I travel carry on) the weight of my system and if the gear or system fill the nesecities of the gig or tour. Thanks Will for bring this important topic.

"none of us are prepared enough to have a screwdriver"- speak for yourself brother. :) If one is a playback..any kind of tech/op/engineer, on a tour, and doesn't have at least a leatherman/multitool, cable tester/multimeter, a couple of DI's, a small speaker with an mini plug input and spare cables of relevant types, in your check in tool-and-spare-underwear case (or as I call it the "oh s$!t box"), that person should probably go out and get that stuff. A good compliment of useful crap will fit in the bottom of a backpack usually. Spare cables can always live under/around the rack in a peli. I'm mostly about function before form, but a nicely groomed rig is like showing up to work in a nice suit. It makes you look good, you get a little more respect (because there are those venue staff that always gotta hate), AND when it is time to troubleshoot, you can see everything and not have to trace a cable through spaghetti. Also, I'm all bout' those neoprene finger flashlights over a headlamp right now because you don't blind the monitor engineer when you lift your head from behind the console. But it's good to have both so yeah, those should be in your kit too...:)
